"Jack!" Alex called to his best friend as he waited rather impatiently for him to come out of his room.

"I'm coming!" Jack lied, styling his two toned hair in his mirror.

"JACK! We're gonna be late man!" Alex yelled again, beyond annoyed.

“I’M COMING, DAMMIT!” Jack responded. He threw on his jacket, before shutting his room door, and meeting Alex by the front door.

“Nice.” Alex smiled and patted Jack on his back.

“Thanks,” He laughed slightly as he opened his front door, “Let’s go.

“So,” Alex said as he diverted his vision from the road to Jack in the passenger seat.

“So?” Jack laughed, looking back at him.

“We’re going to get Kyliee.” He sang with a grin.

“Yesss.” Jack sang back, before running his palms up and down his legs.

“We haven’t seen her in monthsss.”

“I knooow.”

Kylie was one their high school friends. Their group consisted of Alex, Jack, Rian, Kylie, Cassadee, and Delilah. They had another friend, Zack, but he went to a different high school than they did. She had met the rest of the group through Rian, since their parents were really close. They had a special bond, kind of like a brother and a sister.

She was a short little thing when she was in high school, 5’2”, maybe 5’3” at most. She always dyed her hair crazy colors, sometimes it was pink, other days it was periwinkle, one time, she dyed her whole head rainbow.

But as she got older, she grew out of her Manic Panic obsession, and returned to her natural hair color of deep brown. But sadly, that was just about the only thing that grew. Now at the height of 5’3” and a half, she proudly exclaimed to everyone that asked, that ‘the half matters!’

“So Jack,” Alex stated, a smirk sitting on his lips.

“Yes, Alex?” Jack laughed again.

“You never told me what happened the last time lil ol’ Kylie came for a visit, you know.” Alex said, looking over at Jack suggestively.

Jack laughed yet again, not hesitating to say, “Because nothing happened. And I think I told you that already.”

“Bullshit, dude.” Alex retorted with a laugh, glancing at his friend quickly as he drove.

“I’m being serious! We didn’t do anything!” Jack told him.

Alex smirked to himself. “Sure. Alright, we’ll see.”

Jack, obviously confused, asked, “What’s that supposed to mean?”

“It means,” Alex bit his lip as he tried to get into the next lane to turn into Kylie’s terminal, “That my lil Kyles tells Daddy Alex everything.” He finished with a wink.

“Gross,” Jack laughed again as he stuck out his tongue, “Please don’t refer to yourself as ‘Daddy Alex.’”

“Whatever, but she’s gonna tell me either way.”

“JACKY!” The short brunette called as she ran down the jet bridge connected to her plane. She abandoned her bag once she reached the end of the tunnel, and darted toward her lanky, skunk haired friend.

“Kylie!” Jack said surprisingly in response. Before he could say anything else, Kylie jumped onto him, throwing her arms around his neck, and wrapping her short legs around his long torso.

“Hey.” She breathed into his neck, smiling against his warm skin.

“Oh hey,” Jack laughed nervously as he wrapped one of his arms around her small waist, “Did you miss me that much?”

“Mhm.” She buried her nose into his neck. “You smell great.”

Alex laughed to himself. ‘And nothing happened, yeah?’ He mouthed to Jack, who flicked him off in response.

“Hey Kyles, what’s the weather like up there? It must be a nice change from being a good two feet of the ground.” Alex taunted, waiting for the feisty, petite girl to attack him.

She jumped out of Jack’s arms, before turning to face Alex.

“I would hit you, Gaskarth, but you look so pretty today.” She said. “And I missed you a lot.” She threw her arms around him, engulfing him in a hug.

"I missed you, too." He whispered in response, kissing the top of her head lightly.

“And then, I told him he was a complete sleaze, and to leave me the fuck alone,” Kylie told the boys as she sat in the back seat by herself, “Can you believe that?! Ugh, the nerve of some guys.” She groaned, flopping back into the seat as Jack drove.

“Yeah, the nerve of some guys.” Alex said, looking at Jack in his peripheral vision with a smirk.

“Sometimes I want to swear off guys for good honestly,” Kylie sighed, “But I know my true bae is somewhere out there…” She finished dreamily, pulling her knees into her chest, and looking out of the car window.

“Of course he is, Kyles,” Alex began, “I’ve got a feeling he’s pretty close to you. Both emotion wise and distance wise.” He teased. Jack glared at him viciously as he gripped onto the steering wheel with both hands, meanwhile Kylie just giggled to herself in the backseat.

It was obvious that back in high school Kylie and Jack had a thing for each other. They both were crushing on each other hardcore, but they never actually did anything about it, or formed a real relationship. At least not like Delilah and Alex, or like Cass and Rian, anyway.

There was one night at one of Zack’s house parties that Cass swore on her life she saw them making out in an empty room in Zack’s pool house, but they both denied it to no end. And since no one else saw it, everyone claimed that Cass was probably wasted anyway.

But after all these years, everyone knows that Jack liked Kylie, and that Kylie liked Jack.

“So, Alex,” Kylie said through a yawn.

“Yeah?”

“Where's Delilah? Is she at home or something? I miss my fireball.” Kylie questioned, leaning up against Alex’s seat.

Alex gulped, feeling his throat start to swell, and his hands get shaky. He rubbed his palms on his faded skinny jeans repeatedly, a bad habit he had always had.

He didn’t tell Kylie yet.

Last time she came around, they were still together. Their relationship hadn’t become problematic yet, so there was no room for Kylie to suspect anything had changed. Cass only knew because Jack told Rian, who in turn told his girlfriend.

He opened his mouth to speak – not sure of what would come out of it – but nothing did. He started to bite his lip instead, as his hands continued to tremble.

Jack looked over at his best friend, noticing that he was struggling. Their break up really took a toll on Alex, and he was just starting to get over it. This was not helping him.

So Jack took the initiative to help Alex out, and lied to Kylie.

“Um, Delilah is out of town right now,” Jack began nervously, looking over at Alex, who stared with his eyes wide. “She’s in Seattle, visiting her mom.”

Alex gave Jack a very perplexed gaze, to which Jack shrugged slightly.

“I thought she hated her and wanted nothing to do with her though?” Kylie said softly, twirling a piece of her brown hair around her small finger.

“Yeah, but she decided that it’d be best to try to fix their relationship, now that’s she’s an adult.” Jack replied.

Jack decided that in that moment, something needed to be said, so he said it.

But he also decided that he would not be the messenger of Alex’s hardships.

“Yeah,” Alex gulped quietly, “That’s where she is.”

“Oh.” Kylie said. “Okay.”

Alex knew that Kylie deserved to know, but he wasn’t ready to let her know yet. The only person Alex officially told about their breakup was Jack, and that was only because he called him the night it happened in tears.

So in that moment, Alex decided that he would tell Kylie.

But he did not know when, and he did not know how.

but this was also to show that delilah isn't the only one hurt by everything. alex is too, they just hurt differently.
