Letters To Alex

nostalgia

Delilah dropped her pen down on her bed, shakily running her hand through her fire-like hair with a sigh.

She looked over the letter she just wrote, her tiny print filling the narrow lines. Why she wrote it, she didn't know. She just grabbed a pen, some paper, and started to write like no tomorrow.

It did make her feel better to get some of what she's been feeling inside out. But it didn't matter, because it's not like he'd ever see it. She didn't even know where he was to send it to him.

She sulked off her bed, and poked around her closet for nothing in particular. She found an old shoebox, and an idea popped into her head.

She snatched up the box, and threw it on her bed. She plopped back down onto her bed, reading over the letter one last time. She placed it in the box, staring at it for a few minutes.

She then reached to her bedside table, and opened the small drawer that was on the front of it. She pulled out a glossy stack of pictures from her past, along with other mementos, like notes and whatnot.

She began to flip through the pictures, a solemn smile on her face. Most of them were of her and Alex – a few of them of her, Alex, and their friends Jack, Rian, Zack, Kylie, and Cass – ranging all the way from high school to some months ago.

She stumbled upon one picture that made knots swell in her throat.

It was the last picture they had taken together.

She remembered it like it was yesterday.

They drove down to New York City for a few days, just to get away from everyone and everything in Baltimore.

"Alex! Look at all these fucking lights!" Delilah laughed, taking in her surroundings. Taxis zoomed passed her as a various amount of ads illuminated the wide screens high in the sky.

"And not one of is as bright as you." Alex murmured with a smile, causing her face to flush to a shade of red. He chuckled to himself, noticing her now tinted cheeks.

"Wait, didn't we come to Times Square our senior year of high school for spring break?" He questioned with a slight laugh, tugging on her hand as they walked amongst the bevy of hastening people.

"No," she answered as she shook her head, "Everyone went to Cancun. We all came here during winter break of our senior year, cause you and the guys had a gig for New Years, remember?" She responded, to which Alex nodded.

"Right. Good times."

They continued to walk the busy streets of Times Square in silence, just enjoying atmosphere of it all, until Alex spoke up.

"Lilah," he said, causing her to look up, "I have a question."

"Shoot."

"Hey there Delilah, what's it like in New York City?" He sang out, gripping tightly onto her hand with a smirk. She glanced over at him with a straight face, trying not to laugh.

"I'm a thousand miles away but girl tonight you look so pretty, yes you do." He spun her around and grabbed her by the waist, pulling her into him.

"Times Square can't shine as bright you. I swear it's true." He finished, leaving her beyond flustered. He pushed some of her hair behind her ear, running his finger down her jawline.

Her cheeks were extremely rosy, not only because he had made her blush, but it was a bit warm out.

"You know," she began quietly, "I hate when people do that." She laughed, as a smirk appeared on Alex's lips. "But I think you do it better than anyone else ever has."

"Damn straight." He whispered with a chuckle, before kissing her passionately.

They separated from their kiss, staring into one another's eyes.

"I want to remember this forever." Delilah whispered, nibbling on her bottom lip.

"I could see why." Alex said with a chuckle, as Delilah rolled her eyes playfully. She moved to his side, his arm still wrapped around her.

"Excuse me," she spoke to a stranger who passed by, "Would you mind taking a picture with us? If you have the time, of course." She said with a smile, causing the lady to smile back at her. It was an elderly woman who had a warm smile sitting on her face.

"Of course."

Delilah fished her phone out her purse, and handed it to her. She stood next to Alex, who wrapped his arm around her waist once more.

"Peezy macaroni and cheezy!" The lady chimed, causing the both of them to laugh. She captured the shot mid laugh, creating a sort of candid effect. "I hope you like it."

She handed Delilah back her phone, who showed Alex the picture. They both smiled in delight.

"We love it. Thank you." Alex answered, pulling Delilah into him.

"No problem. You two are both every beautiful, and you make a beautiful couple. How long have you been together?" She questioned, fixing the glasses that sat upon her face.

"Since our senior year of high school." Alex responded with a smile, then turned to Delilah. "That's like, six years, yeah?"

"Yes," Delilah laughed, "About six years."

"Wow, that's a long time for such younger people." She said with a grin, a bit taken aback, as they both nodded. "Well I wish to you many more years to come. Have a good day."

"You too! And thanks again." Delilah called as her and Alex walked away hand in hand.

Delilah dropped all the pictures in the box, put the top on it, and shoved it under her bed. She then looked around her room – the room her and Alex once shared – as a sickening rush of nostalgia rushed through her, making her head throb. The rest of the memories they shared in this apartment, from their first to their last, began to replay in her mind.

"Alex! This is amazing, what the hell?!" Delilah exclaimed, dropping her duffle bag on the floor, and walking further into their studio loft apartment.

"Is that a bad thing?" He laughed out, following her vibrant curls as they bounced up the stairs.

"Does it sound like one?" She asked quietly with a smirk, turning to face him. He walked up the steps, meeting her as she stood in the middle of them. He snaked his arms around her waist, his fingertips dancing on her hip bones.

"I dunno, you tell me." He whispered, resting his forehead on hers, and placing a small kiss on her lips. She kissed him back, smiling on his lips in the process.

They separated, the two of them wearing huge smiles.

"I love you so much, babe." Alex hummed, pushing a piece of her red hair behind her pierced ear.

"I love you more Lex." Delilah murmured, her cheeks flushing like a pink rose.

"Okay you goob," She giggled, turning around and bouncing up the rest of the steps. "I wanna see the rest of our magnificent new home."

Delilah blinked repeatedly, feeling her eyes water as a tear shed out her eye.

She wiped it away quickly with the back of her hand – along with the rest that poured out after it – picked up the nearest object, and threw it at the wall, watching it shatter it pieces.

It was a minuscule ceramic pig with wings from Glamour Kills that she begged Alex to buy for her years ago.

"Fuck." She murmured to herself with a sniffle, twisting her face in aggravation as another tear slipped down her face. She wiped away, and picked up her cellphone.

She scrolled through her plethora of messages, all of them saying similar things.

'Come party with us!'

'Come to my spot, I've got the good stuff tonight.'

'I'm really worried about you, we haven't spoken in a while.'

One in particular caught her eye. It was from her old high school friend, Cassadee Pope.

'How are things going for you? I'm sorry about you and Alex. None of us saw it coming. Rian and I really miss you. You should come out to LA for a visit sometime.'

She almost answered it, but instead she deleted it.

She continued to scroll through the rest of her messages, before tapping on one from Nicky, a girl whom she wasn't too familiar with. Nicky was a girl she met at a bar not so long ago. She seemed cool enough, so they traded numbers.

'Text me, we should get together tonight. I know this guy that has a real good hookup.'

Her fingers danced across her touch screen keyboard, finally deciding on something to say.

'I'm down. Send the address my way.'

This was Delilah's life. Ever since Alex left, she hadn’t a care in the world. She felt empty. So she tried to fill the void that burned deep inside of her by either drinking, or doing drugs. That, and those were the only things that kept her from thinking about him.

She rummaged through her closet for something to wear. When she finally decided, she threw it on, and walked into her bathroom to comb her hair.

After she finished getting ready, Delilah bounced down the stairs in her apartment, into the kitchen.

She opened the fridge, which was empty – with the exception of some yogurt, a peach, and some turkey – as usual.

She took out the yogurt and sat on the kitchen counter, eating it as she idly kicked her legs back and forth. She looked around her empty apartment, feeling a sense of melancholy rush over her.

A bottle of Jack caught her eye, which she swooped up and swigged. It burned as it trickled down the back of her throat, a feeling she was far too used to, and was beginning to enjoy.

Her phone vibrated, signaling Nicky had texted her back. She jumped off the counter, tossing the yogurt to the side, and rushed out her door, locking it behind her.

She hailed a taxi rather quickly outside her apartment, and slid in.

"Take me to 7632 Osborne Lane, please." She mumbled, glancing out the window.

"Sure thing." Her driver answered, pulling off from in front of her house.

"Thanks." She breathed out before fishing a bottle of pills out of her purse, and swallowing two of them down dry.
