I Just Want A Place In Your Heart Like You Have A Place In Mine

Chapter XIII

It was Wednesday morning now and I was sitting at my locker waiting for Evan to come. Him and I decided to come a bit earlier to talk before the rest of the guys came so it could be just him and I. Five, ten, fifteen minutes passed I was about to just to get up and go find someone to hang with but then I heard a disastrous scream, I knew that scream. Evan...

My protective instinct kicked in and I found myself running through the halls trying to find where he was. More of the blood wrenching screams filled the halls it seemed and it soon got louder and louder. I ran into the guys bathroom and seen two guys who I did not know beating the shit out of Evan.

I snuck up behind the guys and grabbed the one guys neck and threw him to the wall. I pushed the other one off of Evan and nailed him in the face. The one guy who I slammed into the wall ran off and the other guy snuck up behind me grabbed my shoulder, spun me around and kicked me in the balls and punched me in the face at the same time making me fall to the ground .

“No! Stop!” Evan screamed helplessly on the floor. “Can it, Tranny!” The buff guy screamed kicking Evan once again. That was the final straw. I got off the floor grabbed the dude by the shoulders and kicked him in the groin. I grabbed his collar dragged him out the door and slammed it shut and locked it so he couldn't get back in.

I ran over to Evan who was still laying on the floor. I kneeled down and pushed his bangs out of his face, “what did they do to you?” He looked terrible. His nose and mouth was bleeding, his one eye was swollen, his cheeks were red that would soon turn to bruises. It made me sick seeing him like this. “Here, come on.” I grave him my arm to lean on as he tried getting up. It took a while but I got him up. I helped him onto the counter as I started to dab a paper towel with cold water. I handed it to him and he mumbled a ‘thanks’ then started to slowly wipe the blood off his face trying not to wince.

“So can you tell me what exactly happened?” I asked, the guys were probably looking for us but that wasn’t what I was worried about at the moment.
“W-well I came in here to use the ba-bathroom before meeting y-you and t-they were in here. I tried to just walk past them and go to the stall but they didn’t like the fact that I was in here. They told me that girls aren't allowed in the guys bathroom and you can kinda guess what happened after that.” He whispered, his voice strained and cracked.
“I’m so sorry, Evan.”
“Why? Why can’t I just be like you, or Alex, or Rian, Zack?” He looked down at his lap and a tear fell from his eyes.
“Evan…” I said sympathetically.
“But thanks for coming and helping me, they probably would have beat me till I passed out.” Evan sniffed.
“Hey, dude, no need to thank me. Is there anything I can do?” I asked.
“Help me get home, don’t let anyone see me like this especially Sally. I don’t want her to worry.” Evan sighed slowly getting off the counter. I wrapped my arm around his waist so he had something to lean on. “Alright, lets get you home.”

I unlocked the door and looked to see if anyone was in the halls. No one was. Classes must have already started. Evan and I silently walked out of the school and into the harsh December air.

“But, are you okay?” Evan said after a long silence.
“Yeah, I’m fine.” I said.
“Only if you're sure, he hurt you too Jack. And only ‘cause of me.” Evan mumbled kicking pebbles in front of him.
“I promise I’m fine. Don’t beat yourself up over it.” I said without thinking. Once I said those words we both started laughing quietly like we were going to disturb something out here. “Not the best choice of words, I guess.”
“Y’don’t say?” Evan smiled. I was just glad I could put a smile on his face when he was having a bad day.

We got to his house, my arm still wrapped around his tiny waist making sure he kept his balance. He opened the door and we stepped in. Both of our eyes widen at the sight. Lacey was at the top of the steps crouched into a ball with her hand over her mouth quieting her sobs. Alex had his arm around his Mom as she cried into his shoulder.

“What’s going on?” Evan asked. He limped out of my grip and walked over to his older brother and Mom.
“Evan? Why aren’t you at school?” She sniffed wiping her eyes. She looked up from Alex’s shoulder and gasped when she seen him, “Evan! Not again…”
“What. Is. Going. On.” He asked once again, but a lot more stern this time.
“Just come upstairs to the bathroom, Lace and I will f-fix you up.” His mom wiped her tears again and took Evan upstairs with her recollecting Lacey who was still crying.

“Alex?” I whispered, he looked up at me with broken eyes and ran to me wrapping his arms around me, clinging to me like his life depended on it. I was shocked but wrapped my arms around him squeezing him tight letting him know I will always be here. Alex rested his head in the crook of my neck and it started to get wet. He was crying.
“It’s okay, shh.” I whispered rubbing his back trying to comfort him. His grip softened and he relaxed. I’ve never seen Alex like this and I don’t want to see it again. I hated to see him cry, he is too beautiful to cry. After his sobbing died down, we sat down on the couch and he let out a shaky breath.

“It was Dad.” He mumbled.
“What’d he do?” I knew they had problems with their Dad but I didn’t know it was this bad.
“Well, I was about to go to school when I heard shouting from my parents bedroom. Evan was already at school and Lacey was sleeping. So, I went in and Dad was drunk.” He stopped for a moment and let out a shaky breath. I put my arm around his shoulder to comfort him. He stiffened up a bit but then leaned into me resting his head on my shoulder. “It was obvious. There was smashed beer bottles, Mom was trying to calm him down but he was just yelling at her. I didn’t want him to hit her so I stepped in and stopped it before something could happen. Mom was just sobbing, she never seen him that way. I knew how to handle it, I’ve seen him that way so much-”
“What do you mean you’ve seen him that way before?” I said cutting him off.
“It’s nothing.” He whispered.
“Tell me, please.” I begged. He lifted his head off my shoulder and said, “he just get’s drunk a lot when Mom is sleeping so I know how to handle it.”
“Are you sure that is all?” I doubled checked. I knew there was something he wasn’t telling me but I know I won’t be able to get it out of him today.
“Yeah. So after I took him out of the room, he was just screaming more, then I was screaming. It scared Lacey and Mom. After I called Dad a coward he threw his beer bottle at me. He missed though and left. I’ve never seen him this bad though, he was never like this in front of the girls, he’s not even like that around Evan, Dad still thinks Evan is a girl.”
“I’m so sorry, Alex. I’m glad you and your family are okay, I don’t know what I’d do if something were to happen.”
“Don’t worry, if you stay, I’ll stay.” Alex smiled and so did I. Little words can mean so much… “What happened to Evan?” Alex asked a moment of silence.
“We were going to meet at school early to hang out, he went to the guys bathroom and two dudes were in there and you probably know what happened after that. I heard him screaming, I ran to find him. He w-w-was on the floor crying. It was absolutely terrible. I got the guys off him and out of the bathroom though.” Alex lifted his hand to my cheek and cupped it.
“You took a punch for my brother?” Alex asked moving his hand that was covering the bruise I had got.
“Yeah, also a kick to the balls.” I said with a slight laugh.
“Owww!” Alex laughed but then got serious, “but thank you. I wasn’t there and you stood up for him and that means the world to me.”
“Don’t thank me. Evan doesn’t deserve that shit.” I shrugged.
“Neither do you, Jack. I don’t know if you realize but I know you get beat up at school because of your sexuality and I’m too much of a coward to stick up for you. So the fact you stand up for my little bro means a lot.” Alex said sadly.
“Yeah, it’s alright. I can take a few punches.” I smiled. He smiled back and we were left in a silence until he said,

“I know you can. You don’t deserve it though. I don’t understand why someone would want to hurt someone as perfect as you are.”
