Playing a Game of Hearts

Stay Longer

Alex was so preoccupied with the shooting of the movie that he was never at home, when he was it was only long enough for his mother to Skype him and make sure he was still with Marissa. He would come home at odd hours, and sleep for two or three hours, then go back to work. Rissy barely ever saw him and wasn't sure what to make of it, did she like not seeing him? Her mind was focused on working out and drinking plenty of water. She had thinned down in the last two weeks, it made her think back to when Alex had said 'Only three weeks, then you're done.'. Did he really mean that? She would have to stay up and ask him.

It was getting late, it was already December 22. The sun was down hidden beneath the snow clouds that floated over Baltimore. Alex looked in the rear-view mirror of his car, there was a billion miles of traffic behind him, he could see the headlights fading as he got close to the condo. He was waiting for the shooting to wind down some more, his mother was skyping him more frequently now. He felt like she was planning something, but he wasn't sure. He called Marissa to have her open the door for him
"Hello?" Her soft voice answered, she sounded like she was out of breath.
"Marissa? What are you doing? You sound like you've just ran a marathon."
"I went for a three mile jog and I just got back."
"In the cold?"
"Yes."
"Uh, alright then." He shook off the feeling that that wasn't a good idea and then said. "I need you to open the door for me now please."
"Alright."

Marissa opened the door and watched as Alex staggered in carrying a huge pile of gifts and such in his arms.
"Damn, did you buy a department store?"
"No. These are gifts for my workers and family."
"Oh." She shook her head and then thought about that promise he'd made her when they had started this lie.
"Well I think you should come with me tomorrow, Jack wants to show you off around the hotel."
"Why?" Her well shaped eyebrows rose a couple centimeters.
"Hell if I know." Alex commented.
"I guess." She nodded, the question about when she would leave falling to the wayside for the time being.
"Hey, do you want to go get something to eat? You must be starving."
"No I'm good."
"Marissa, you practically never eat around me."
"I'm just not hungry. That's all."

Alex rested his head on the desk in his small office that was on the first floor of the condo, he heard his laptop ring and he saw his mother pop up. He answered;
"Good morning, love!" His mother was a chipper as always.
"Good evening, mom." He laughed.
"Oh I always forget that damned time change." She frowned at herself then said "Oh! Darling I have some amazing news. Hold on let me get your father so we can both tell you."
Isobel and Peter Gaskarth returned into frame.
"You should go get Marissa! She'll love this, I promise."
Alex felt worry bubble up in his stomach, they wanted Marissa in the video call too? This couldn't be good.

Alex quickly made his way up the stairs and knocked on her door,
"Hey, my mom and dad are on skype. They said they have something to tell the both of us." The door opened and Marissa looked at him like he was crazy.
"Like what?"
"I dunno, they wouldn't tell me unless you're there."
"Okay then." She muttered as they both descended the stairs together. They arrived in the office and saw his parents on the screen.
"Hello, love!" Isobel commented excitedly.
"Hello Mrs. Gaskarth." Marissa said with a sweet smile, she was always so nice to his mother.

"We have some amazing news!"
"What would that be?" Alex asked. His father had a large grin on his face as he said
"Your mother and I are going to be down tomorrow afternoon, your time. We wanted to spend Christmas threw New Years with you two!"
"O-oh! That's wonderful." Marissa stuttered. Well there went only being here for another week and having a job by then.
"Isn't it though! I'm so excited to meet you in person!" Isobel exclaimed, her soft looking brown hair that was similar to Alex's bounced with her rapid movements.
"M-mom. Why didn't you tell me earlier, I could have booked you a room in the hotel."
"But we want to stay with you two, you have a spare bedroom."
"Well I mean Mariss-"
"You two sleep in the same room don't you?"
"Of course we do." Marissa covered up his almost blunder with her quick wit.

"I can't believe her." Alex muttered as he laid on his bed that night. Now what was he going to do about Marissa? They were going to have to share a bedroom, possibly a bed. He frowned when he thought about what he had told her when they first started she would only be here for about three weeks tops. He groaned and got out of bed to go talk to her. He knocked on her door and then opened it.
"Hey I need to talk to you about something."
"Oh?" She seemed to be pondering something big.
"Yeah, about what I said when you first moved in. You would only have to stay for three weeks tops."
"What about it?"
"Well with my parents coming, I'm afraid you'll have to stay longer."
"I understand."
"I'm very sorry."

Marissa rolled her eyes as she heard him say he was sorry, it was obviously not true. She knew that he was conceited and cold. After the sandwich incident they hadn't talked very much, he was always gone and that was a good thing for Marissa. She could work out as much as she wanted and not have to worry about waking him up. Alex was standing in her room, fake apologizing to her, what could be better?
Anything. Answered her subconscious. She glanced up again and saw him still standing there, she didn't want to sound rude and snap at him.
"You're still going with me tomorrow, correct?" Any kindness those brown eyes held was gone in three seconds.
"Yeah, I guess." She muttered.
"Great."
"Goodnight then." She commented as she climbed into bed.
"Yeah." Was all he said as he left the room shutting the door behind him. She quickly fell asleep.

Notes

It took me a month to update, I'm sorry guys.

Comments

So I just stumbled across this, and I really like what you have of it. This story definitely has a different approach to it, it's been a while since I've read Alex being so harsh of a character in a story. But he has his sweet moments.
If you ever choose to continue this, I will be here to read. I'm interested in seeing how the plot line would develop. The summary has me sad, but I'm wondering just how far the relationship progresses to get to that point.
So hoping maybe this comment will inspire you to continue.
