Here We Go Again

4

Jack stepped into Alex’s house with a barely audible shaky breath, he didn’t know how he was going to cope an hour in here, not with Alex, not after what happened. He soon composed himself and stood up straight, it was time to be professional, he couldn’t show his nerves and he most certainly couldn’t show that he was still pretty much in love with the older man. “Mr Gaskarth.” He started after Alex had led him into the living room and sat him down on the couch. “I’m here to ask you a few questions about your boyfriend? I’m sure you’re aware that your boyfriend is currently being held in prison for suspicion of murder.” He looked up to Alex who honestly just looked like he had heard the most ridiculous thing ever, although Jack was sure that he saw a hint of something in his ex’s eyes but he couldn’t quite put his finger on it. “James? In prison?” He scoffed and shook his head incredulously, as if it was impossible for this man to even think about committing murder, let alone actually doing it. “I’m sure you have the wrong person, sir. My boyfriend is not capable of murdering anyone, in fact I’m sure the thought would never enter his head.” Alex shook his head once again and let out a soft breath. “I really think that you have that you have the wrong person.” Alex started to fidget slightly and look everywhere in the room apart from Jack. Jack only raised an eyebrow and nodded “Are you sure about that Mr Gaskarth? I have been to see your boyfriend and he has given me your contact details.” He looked over Alex for a few seconds, and just as the memories of their past started to flicker into his head, he sat up and pulled out his notebook. “I need to ask you a few questions now, Mr Gaskarth.” Alex nodded in reply and looked up to Jack, ready for any questions that would come his way. “Okay” He mumbled. Jack smiled shyly and bit his lip before he looked down to the first question, “So, Mr Gaskarth. When was the last time you saw your boyfriend?” He glanced up to Alex through his glasses and held his pen over the notebook to record the answer. “Two weeks ago” Came Alex’s shy reply. Jack nodded and took a breath before writing the answer and asking the next question. “Okay, can you tell me what you were doing when he saw each other last?” He raised an eyebrow and watched him. Alex’s face clearly paled a little bit and his arm automatically came up to cover his still bruised torso. “W-well. The last time I saw him was when he came home from work. I-I had made him dinner but he didn’t seem to be in the best of moods, so he soon stormed out.” Jack had clocked Alex’s movements, and was now suddenly even more interested. He looked down to his sheet of paper before looking back up to Alex. “You’re being a bit vague, Mr Gaskarth. I’m going to have to ask you to expand on that.” Alex only stayed silent, his eyes flickering between the floor and his knees. “Mr Gaskarth, do you know why your boyfriend happened to be in a bad mood? Do you know why he stormed out? Did he do anything out of character?” He leaned forward a little bit and watched Alex. “I need you to tell me, this could be crucial to the case.” He sighed and tried to think of a way to explain to Alex how important anything he had to say was to the case. Alex silence remained for a few more seconds before he finally sighed and looked down again, not really wanting to look at his ex as he started to speak. “I think I upset him” He whispered “He basically said that I ruined dinner by putting tomatoes on his plate.” He whispered. “He also said the chicken was dry” His hands gripped onto the fabric of the couch as the memories which he had been trying to forget came flooding back into his head. “He called me worthless” He mumbled, staying quiet for a few more seconds, deliberating what he was going to say next. “Then he hit me” He whispered. Jack sat and listened to Alex, his hand gripping his pen and his free hand soon clenched into a fist. How dare somebody hurt his Alex, he didn’t care that Alex probably didn’t want anything to do with him, as far as he was concerned, Alex was still the most precious person in the world. Yes, brown haired boy had caused Jack a lot of pain in the past, but right now that didn’t matter. Somebody had hurt his Alex and he was outraged, but the thing was, he had to stay completely neutral about this. He couldn’t show that he was completely and utterly disgusted with his client. He still had to defend him, even if he was now wishing that he would lose this case and James would be convicted. “Oh, I see” He mumbled and wrote down exactly what Alex said with shaky hands, he was trying so hard to control his temper. He was trying so hard to not just jump up and wrap his arms around Alex and tell him that everything will be okay. He wanted nothing more than to kiss him and make everything better, he wanted to make sure that no one would ever lay a finger on the boy again, but he couldn’t, and that killed him. Alex nodded and kept his eyes on the floor as he played with his fingers, he saw the way Jacks hand gripped and made fists, he could tell that he was upset about it but he was sure that’s as far as it went, it wasn’t as if he made some huge gesture to show how sorry he was that he had to go through that. “Yeah” He whispered and brought his knees to his chest as he started to feel a little self-conscious. Jack bit his lip and nodded and looked to Alex, his eyes soft as looked to his ex, just seeing him looking to sad broke his heart. “I think that will do for today, Mr Gaskarth” He mumbled before he packed his things up and looked to Alex. “Thank you for your time” He mumbled once again and stood up to leave. Alex nodded and stood up to show him out, he pulled his sleeves over his hands before opening the door. “Thanks for coming, I guess.” He mumbled and watched as Jack stepped out of the door. Jack nodded and watched Alex before he sighed softly and reached out to put a hand on his arm, the familiar sparks shooting through his hand and up his arm. “Alex” He whispered, acknowledging him as somebody other than an acquaintance of a client just for a minute. “I’ll make sure that everything will be put right, okay?” He whispered and looked into the familiar eyes of his ex. “You’re not going to get hurt again, okay? I promise that everything will be okay and that you’re gonna be safe.” He let his hand run down Alex arm with a soft smile before he started to walk down the uneven garden path. Alex was left with a small smile on his face, Jack knew who he was and he still wanted to look after him.
