Don't Forget Me

The car ride home was silent.
No words could add up to what I was feeling inside. If Delaney doesn't get the proper attention she needs, she'll never remember the life she lived before, the life she could live now, and the life she could dream about in the future. I don't want her living a lie forever.

Later that evening after dinner, I go up to my bedroom and lock my door. I can't bare to even leave my room, rather than my house right now. I'm trying to be strong for the both of us, but I have so much on my plate and it's just too much for me to handle. I don't know how Zack is putting up with me right now to be honest.

I don't remember falling asleep, but I remember waking up at around 8:30 to voices down in the living room. I get out of bed and open the door to take a peak downstairs. To my surprise, it was Harold, Sarah, and Delaney. I was surprised that they even called us, figuring that they would just forget today even happened. Seeing them there, especially Delaney, I didn't feel so mad anymore. I go downstairs to greet them.
"Alex!" Harold and Sarah each embraced me with a hug. I then look at Delaney, face to face, no expression. Then, a small smile can across her face.
"Hi," she said quietly. She stuck out her hand for me to shake.
"Hi, Delaney," I said as I shook her hand. It was her left hand I shook and I noticed that her engagement ring was missing. I didn't say anything, but I was confused and sad as to how and why it's missing. I brush it off because there are more important things to worry about than a stupid ring.
"Alex," said Delaney. "I.....I changed my mind about seeing a doctor. If you really do remember me, then......then we'll just have to work at it huh?"
"Yeah, we'll definitely work this out."
"Quite honestly, I really don't remember who you are or Zack or anything about this house. I do want to know who you are to me and know about everything in my life, but you're just a total stranger. It's a whole new world."
"I know....but we're gonna get back on track okay? You just have to trust me, please?"
I reach out for her hand, hoping she'll agree to trust me and Zack.
I felt her hand touch mine and I looked at her and smiled while she smiled back.
"Great, we'll bring her back with us tonight and start packing her things. We brought her some new clothes that she can take with her here," said Sarah.
"That's perfect, I can't wait to get her the help she needs," I said as I hug both Harold and Sarah. I look over at Delaney once more.
"You ready for this?" I asked.
"Ready ass I'll ever be," she said as she held out her hand again and I go in to hold her hand. Her hands were always perfect: soft, smooth, and the ideal size for her hand to fit in mine.
As they drove off for the night, I said to Zack, "Hey....maybe things are gonna be alright now."

The next morning, Zack, Laney, and I went to the hospital to properly diagnose Laney's amnesia. Laney went in for an MRI and a CAT scan to look for any head injury. A couple hours passed, and in that time, Zack and I tried to help Laney jog her memory with anything, but with no success. At last, the doctor came in with the results.
"Well, what's the diagnosis?" I asked nervously.
"It's definitely amnesia," the doctor replied. "From the results, there was a tiny bity of damage in her head, not enough to cause too much worry. Just the result of a mild concussion. It was enough, however, to caused her to experience amnesia. She must've hit her head hard to make her forget everything. I also noticed a scar on the back of her head as well, thankfully it never got infected. Are there some things she does remember?"
"Only her name, that's about it," said Zack.
"Okay. Let's do this....Laney? I'm gonna ask you some questions and you try and answer them okay?"
"Alright," said Delaney, sounding pretty reluctant.
"What is your full name?"
"Um......uh...Delaney..... Maria.....Morrick?"
"Very close actually! Your full name is Delaney Marie Merrick. Now, what is your date of birth?"
"Oh.....um......wow, I honestly don't know," she said"
"Your date of birth is August 29th, 1996. Are your parents still living?"
"Yes they are, aren't they?" Delaney asked, confused.
I looked over at Zack and saw him tear up because she doesn't remember that her parents have died.
"Sweetheart, your parents are no longer with us. Your mom died when you were 16 and your father died two years later."
Delaney gasped and started to get very emotional. I watched her as she looked at me with the saddest eyes I've ever seen in my life. It finally became too much for her and she broke down in a massive amount of tears. I was very hesitant to go and give her a hug, but then, she has to know that I'm here for her, whether she remembers me or not. Myself and Zack both get up to hug Delaney, and actually accepted our hugs. I felt so bad for this girl, I cried along with her and I held her tight. Even the doctor wiped away some tears for her eyes.
After calming Laney down, we went ahead with a plan to help her jog her memory.
"Okay, so I need you have a night dedicated to showing her pictures, having her smell familiar scents, taking her to important places that are significant to her life. Having actual evidence is guaranteed to boost her memory again and within a month, her memory will be good as new!"
"Wow, that's it?" I was surprised by how that's all it took.
"Yup, she'll be good as new!"
I actually felt relieved for the first time in months, knowing that within a month, I'll have my Delaney back and everything will go about how it was before.
We exit the hospital and into a brand new chapter in this journey ahead of us.
