Don't Forget Me

The Moment of Truth

I fixate my eyes onto the hallway from where the creaking noise came from and the floorboards moaned as she got closer.
Delaney then appears, dressed in the same outfit the night before.
"Yes, Sarah -- oh my God, it's him!" Delaney ran off back into her room and slammed the door behind her. Sarah immediately ran off to bring her back into the living room.
"Delaney! Sweetheart, please come back!"
I start to tear up again as I just witnessed my fiancée totally disregard my existence. What troubles me is that I know deep down, she knows who I am, she needs to know who I am first before anything can ever resemble a normal relationship again.
"I'm o sorry, Alex. Do you want to sit and wait for them to come back out?" Harold was so kind to lead Zack and I somewhere to sit as e wait patiently.
We at there in silence for a couple minutes, m mind reeling with so many situations and how this'll turn out.
"You know Sarah and I knew that there was something wrong with Delaney when she first came to us. She's been with us for about two weeks now and we've taken care of her so well. You two are our answer to this young lady."
"We never gave up on looking for her. I've know Laney since 8th grade. We've now been out of high school for a year now. Both her parents have died within the last few years, her mom to cancer and her dad to a heart attack."
"Oh my," said Harold, as he stared at the hallway to Delaney's room. "I....I fee so bad for this young lady. I know she'll be in the best of care with the two of you. You have proof too, if you didn't have all this information, I wouldn't have trusted you at all."
"Well....I'm lad we brought this information to you," said Zack, and we all cracked a smile.
Just then, the same creak of a door's hinges I heard just minutes before creaked again and my heart drops once more. The floorboards creaked the same tune, and just then, Sarah appears with Delaney, frightened and seemingly vulnerable.
Harold walks toward her with caution, knowing how delicate she is right now.
"Delaney......Delaney, these young men know you. They've been searching for your months. You were in a car accident before, do you happen to remember that accident?"
We all lock our eyes on her waiting for a response.
She shook her head. "No, I don't," she said quietly.
"You don't remember these two guys?" asked Sarah. She points to Zack. "That's your brother, Zack." She then points to me. "That's your fiancé, Alex."
Delaney looks utterly confused. "I....I'm sorry. I don't remember you guys." Delaney walks up to me and stares into my eyes and I stared into her.
"I.....I wanna apologize for those rude remarks last night. I still can't trust you though"
I look t her and I felt a disconnection in my heart and soul that she said that to me and she doesn't even know that we had a past, a happy past. We were suppose to have a happy present, and then a happy future. And now, it means absolutely nothing to her.
Harold walks up to Laney with a smile on his face to try and comfort her.
"Laney, this is going to be tough, but we need to let you go with Alex and Zack. They're going to take you to a doctor for some tests and try and see what's going."
"No!! They can't take me! I don't trust them!!"
"I'm sorry, honey, but you're just going to have to trust them and trust Sarah and I. This is for your own good. I promise they aren't going to do anything bad to you, they love you, sweetheart. You just don't know it yet, and you will eventually."
Delaney looked into Harold's eyes, and then looked at Sarah, then Zack, and then at me She looks back at Harold again.
"I'm sorry, Harold. I just can't." She then breaks down in tears and burrows her head into Harold's shoulder.
At that point, I just couldn't take it anymore.
"You know what, I honestly just can't deal with this anymore and I need to get away from all this. If you wanna get in contact, Zack can leave you both our numbers and you can...call us.....whenever, I don't know." I quickly walk out of the apartment and down the stairs. I went outside and it was still raining. I just stood there, not giving a shit if I was wet, not giving a shit about Delaney, not giving a shit about anything anymore. I was done.
I screamed at the top of my lungs as I looked up to the rainy sky as this weather could not relate any less as to what I was feeling right now.
