The Lost Boys

The Enchanted Forest

Okay, okay I admit it! It was a fucking stupid idea to go on this hiking trip all alone. I am currently somewhere along the Appalachian trail and I'm completely lost.

Oh, don't get me wrong I have maps and books and all the required equipment with me, it weighs a ton and my backpack is killing me at the moment. I even have a GPS app on my phone but I haven't got reception at the moment not that I would be able to actually use the given coordinates to find out my position, I am a terrible navigator.

The Appalachian Trail is the most famous hiking trail in the world. It runs from Maine in the north of the United States to Georgia in the south.

Some people try to walk the entire 2,174 mile trail over several months. Others simply enjoy day-trips to parts of the AT. I opted for a two week long section of the trail to spend my holidays this year doing something significant, or so I thought.

In the course of its journey, the trail follows the ridgeline of the Appalachian Mountains, crossing many of its highest peaks, and running, with only a few exceptions, almost continuously through wilderness.

I should have considered the fact that I am a person with a very bad orientation, I have managed to get lost in public parks and medium sized malls, so what actually made me think I could survive out here in the wilderness without a guide is beyond me at the moment.

You see in my job as a sound engineer for a recording company in New York I have to deal with so many people on a daily basis that I thought it would be the utmost relaxing experience to be alone for two weeks.

I don't have a problem being alone, actually I love to be alone, maybe just not in the wilderness at the moment I would much more prefer to be alone in a five star spa resort.

Right now I am somewhere in the woods and I have lost the track and it's about to get dark in a while and I don't think I will find the next shelter in time. Actually I don't think I will find the next shelter at all.

This is not so bad as I said I have all the necessary equipment so I decide to just look around for a suitable place to put up my tent and stay for the night. I have been hiking for eight hours today and to say I wouldn't be tired would be an understatement.

As I have lost the path anyway, I just walk in different directions to find a bit of a clearing amongst the huge trees and after about half an hour of walking uphill through dense and dark forest I am lucky and find a beautiful spot.

There is an opening in the woods that has a meadow with charming little mountain flowers growing on it. The sun is low in the sky and lets it's golden rays trickle through the tree stems onto the grass, making all the colours even more vibrant.

I am mesmerised by the beauty of this place and decide to just put up a tarp to lie under so I can take in my surroundings and hopefully a beautiful night sky as well.

I put up my camp quickly, lighting a small fire and putting down my mat and my sleeping bag under the tarp. I have been doing this almost every night for the last week and I consider myself a professional by now.

I put up the kettle to boil the water for my tea, something so simple but still it became so important for me on this trip, to be able to warm myself with a good cup of tea each night. I lie back on my bag to rest while I wait for the water to get hot. It is almost dark by now, the sun sending it's last light beams across the darkening sky and it is beautiful.

I must have fallen asleep for a couple of minutes because I am awoken by something poking my arm. I shoot up to a sitting position momentarily confused until I recognise my surroundings and realise where I am. I look around but can't see anything in the fading light.
I guess I have been dreaming and imagining this, so I'm about to lay back down when I think I hear a faint sound.

I sit up again and look around trying to listen into the darkness. "Hello?" I say. I don't want to be too loud but I do more than whisper. "Is somebody out there?" Nothing. Then suddenly there is a slight rustle in a nearby bush.

I hold my breath. Please don't let this be a bear! That's about the only thing that really frightens me out here. All the other creepy and crawly animals don't bother me much and wolves are even my favourite of all animals, although I am not even sure they live around here but bears, No!

I have heard and read some really frightening stories about bear incidents on this trail and I am sure I don't want to experience anything like that. I feel around inside my backpack for my hunting knife which is the only weapon I have. There! Another sound! That does sound nothing like a bear! It sounds like...someone giggling?

......

Notes

Okay, this is a plot, I have come up with, I haven't planned it out totally yet, so I really rely on your feedback to determine where this story will go. Thank you for reading, voting, and commenting.
As always! I love you guys ;))

Comments

Awww, I'm glad to hear that. That was my point with leaving it. <3
And I totally understand. I admire you for finishing it, really, and having the will to do so and just considering how the readers might feel if it wasn't. I'm glad you did wrap it up; like I said, while there were some things I wondered about, it was still a good ending by letting us know essentially what was going on and letting us know what ended up happening to Mel.
So no worries. :)

@Nanook
You have no idea how happy your comment made me. I fully understand your reasoning and I had planned this story to be longer and more detailed but as time went on I felt there was not a lot of interest from the readers and somehow that made me loose my confidence. So I brought the story to an end pretty quickly just so I wouldn't let you guys hanging with an unfinished plot. (Cause that drives me crazy when it happens to me). Anyway thank you so much for your review it made my day ☺️

Hello.
So I just stumbled across this story. Don't ask how I found it cause I honestly don't know. XD
But oh my god. This story... I can't believe it didn't get more recognition. It was seriously... amazing.
Not only was there a unique plot line, but you kept it going, leaving us on edge with what was going on with the main character, and just... wow, it was seriously so awesomely written. You're a really great writer, and a creative person for working with this concept.
I had a feeling from the beginning that it probably dealt with death (just from the whole Peter Pan in general conspiracy theory, which may have inspired you, maybe not... where Neverland is seen as a heaven type of thing, and that's why they never grow older). But, wow, you definitely changed it up a bit by making her still be alive in the process, like not making her already dead and in a type of heaven. And that made it unique with switching back and forth between the realities.
The only thing that I'm left wondering about, is what was Mel's past? Why was she no longer with Alex? How did her relationships build with each of the people? Although I guess some of it can be assumed, I would have liked to have read more into that, just to show how connected she was with them, and why it was even more significant in her other reality. But that's really it. And I mean, I guess with the way the story works, with us reading alongside her not knowing, it kind of made sense that it went this way. But idk, may be something to consider to write about someday. Although, don't get me wrong, it's amazing as is and I understand if you don't want to mess that up.
But yeah, I just wanted to leave a comment letting you know that I really enjoyed this, even two years after you posted it. Great job with it. This is the first story in a long time that's made me cry. A sad ending, but happy at the same time since she was finally at peace.
I again can't believe this story didn't get more recognition, you deserve more and if I had read it while you were updating, I definitely would have commented frequently and gave feedback. Unfortunately, that didn't happen, so I'm hoping my long comment now makes up for that, lol.
I will definitely have to check out some more of your stuff. <3

@thetrekkie
Awwwww, thank you. Well I had a couple of filler chapters in my mind and I know there are a few loose ends in the story that I should have resolved but honestly, it was the best I could do at the moment. So yeah. Bye and love you. X
