Impossibilites

It was starting to snow outside, meaning winter was staying for a while. I was stuck inside while Alex and Jack got to enjoy the winter weather. I hated being stuck inside, but the baby was giving me no choice.

Speaking of the baby, I am enormous now. I look ready to pop. I had grown so fast, I was wearing Alex’s shirts, but I couldn’t cover my stomach. You could just see all the bruises I had from the baby. I was almost just black, blue, and purple. I was in constant pain too. I could barely sleep anymore because of the baby kicking me all the time. Even worse was I haven’t been able to eat anymore. I’ve been surviving from Alex giving me his blood and I have to drink four blood bags a day to keep the baby from killing me.

Alex and Jack finally came back inside after their fun of out in the snow. I looked at them with sullen eyes and Alex instantly came to my side. He kissed my cheek and stroked my brittle hair.

“I wish I could go outside,” I complained, “I always liked to go out in the snow.”

“Here let me get you one of my jackets to bundle up with, okay,” Alex kissed my forehead and grabbed one of his spare coats. Jack helped me stand and Alex put the coat on me.

As Alex walked me to the door, I felt the baby kick me. It was a lot harder than normal. I also heard something snap before I felt my leg give out. I actually couldn’t feel my legs.

“Kenzie,” Alex shouted as he kept me from falling, “What just happened?”

“The baby broke my back,” I groaned in pain, “I can’t feel my legs.”

I looked down and saw a puddle under me. My water broke. The baby was coming. Alex scooped me up into his arms and took me downstairs. Jack was following close behind.

“Jack, I have to reset her back,” Alex said to Jack, “Go get Tay and Cameron.”

“Alex,” I was crying heavily, “I can’t feel my legs. I can’t push the baby out.”

“I know,” he kissed my forehead, “But I have reset your back. It’s going to hurt.”

Alex sat me up and I felt him push into my back. I screamed as I felt my back slip back into place. I could feel all the pain now. I was in unbearable pain from my contractions and my back.

“Kenzie I need you drink,” Alex bit into his wrist and gave it to me, “It’s been too long since you had any. I need to make sure you have enough blood in your system to bring you back. I can’t raise this baby without you.”

I drank his blood, desperate to make sure I had more than enough to bring me back to start my transition. I wasn’t about to die on him.

“Okay push,” Jack coached me.

I was squeezing Alex’s hand in a tight vice grip. I was screaming out in pain as I used all my strength to get my seventh push in. The baby wasn’t crowning yet, and I was losing blood the longer this went on.

“Is it crowning,” Alex asked.

“Not yet,” Jack reported, “Push again, and even harder.”

I let out the loudest scream yet as I pushed the hardest I’ve ever pushed. I was in the worst pain in my life, but I needed to get the baby out of me. I wasn’t about to die and turn with her inside me still.

“I see the baby,” Jack cheered, “It’s crowning.”

Soon after five more pushes, we finally heard the screams of the baby. I fell back on my bed, drained of all strength. I was ready to give up and just let my heart stop. But there was something keeping me there.

“What did we have,” I asked, my voice weak.

“A girl,” Jack told me as he placed her on my chest. She was beautiful. She was born with a head of hair and a strong set of lungs that let her cry.

“What should we name her,” I asked Alex as I let my eyes close.

“Arielle Willow,” he replied, “Kenzie?”

I didn’t reply.

“Kenzie,” Alex screamed.

“Alex,” I heard Jack call him.

“What,” he asked.

“Her heart’s slowing down,” he told him, “She’ll go into transition. We just have to wait.”
