Blood Crystal

We stayed still as Evangeline paced around us. She looked tame yet savage at the same time. Nathaniel really did a number on her. I felt sorry for the blonde. I looked at Kenzie and I could tell Evangeline was freaking her out. Hell, she was getting to me too.

“If I let you get to Elizabeth,” Evangeline reasoned, “Then Nathaniel could get his hands on the one thing he’s wanted more than ever. I can’t risk him getting the power he wants from Mackenzie.”

“How can you tell who I am,” Kenzie asked, “You haven’t seen me since I was a child.”

“You look a lot like your mother,” she replied, “You look just like Elizabeth.”

“Evangeline, please,” Richard took a step towards her, “Help us restore Mackenzie to her natural state. We can train her. She can fight Nathaniel and win. Give her the chance to be whole again. Maybe she can use her talents to repair the damage he did to you.”

“Alright fine,” Evangeline sighed, “I’m tired of playing gargoyle over my in-law anyway. It’s boring trying to protect a tomb.”

Evangeline led us into the graveyard. We followed her closely so we wouldn’t get lost. For being up there in age, Abigail was able to keep up with us through the maze of headstones and family crypts. When we finally got to where Evangeline was leading us, she turned towards me.

“You must stay out here, turned vampire,” she ordered, “There’s a seal here to keep non-purebloods out.”

“What about me,” Kenzie asked, “I’m a turned vampire.”

“But you have the blood of a pureblood with in you,” Abigail explained, “This allows you to pass. I designed the seal to keep any foot soldiers turned by Nathaniel out of here to protect Elizabeth.”

“Go ahead,” I kissed Kenzie’s cheek, “I’ll be here, okay. I can keep watch.”

“I’ll help,” Carmina caught up to us, “You won’t be able to guard them alone, Gaskarth.”

“I will remain out here too,” Richard added, “I’ll help level the odds for us.”

Evangeline led Abigail and I down into the tomb. We stopped at a marble wall with an elaborate design carved into the stone. I gulped, knowing that my mother would be behind that door. I was so nervous; afraid that she’d be upset that I was turned.

“Alright,” Abigail sighed as she opened her grimoire, “The spell is simple enough for me to cast alone. Once it’s done, we need to get Elizabeth out into the bayou. She’ll be safe on my houseboat while she regains her strength.”

We both nodded as Abigail began the spell. Her words were foreign to me, so I didn’t focus on them. I instead focused on what would happen after we got my mother out. How would she react to seeing me? Would she be willing to give me back my pureblood status? Or would she run off again?

“There,” Abigail breathed as she went to the nearest wall to catch her breath, “It’s done. You can open the door, Evangeline.”

Evangeline simply nodded and opened the door. Once the door was open, I saw my mother for the first time in years. Her once vibrant hair was dull and caked with dust. Her once piercing eyes were dull. Her skin was dried up and withered, almost like old parchment.

“Abigail,” Elizabeth wheezed, “Why did you open my tomb?”

“Mackenzie needs to be restored,” she replied, “Nathaniel is free. We need your help.”

“Get me out of here and fed,” she coughed out dust, “I’m too dried up to be of use.”

Once we returned to the houseboat, Alex gave up three of our blood bags to give my mother back her strength. She looked just like my dream. I was blown away by her beauty. I never once thought I would see her again, and I was so relieved that I got to meet her again.

“You truly are beautiful,” my mother gushed as she caressed my cheek, “I dreamed of you in my solitude. I never wished this to happen to you.”

“It’s okay,” I told her, “I’m just happy to be able to meet you. I used to dream of what you might have looked like when I was growing up with Uncle Richard.”

“I am sorry I took away your birthright, Mackenzie,” she smiled sadly, “I had to do it to protect you from your father. I was not going to allow him to rob me of my only daughter.”

“What about the crystal, Liz,” Abigail asked, “We need to get started on the ritual for Mackenzie.”

“I know,” she sighed, “Here.”

My mother handed the blood red crystal to Abigail. It had a faint glow to it that would flash like a heartbeat. I was entraced by it.

“She can recognize it,” Richard commented, “She knows it what’s left of her being. We must begin. We don’t have much time before Nathaniel tracks us all down.”

“Mackenzie, please lay down here,” Abigail pointed to a spot on the floor and I did as she asked.

“You’ll need blood to start this,” my mom bit her palm and pressed it against the crystal, “To awaken the crystal.”

Abigail started the spell. I began to scream out in pain. I felt like I was burning alive while I was being put out at the same time, and it repeated over and over again.

“Carmina,” Alex shouted, “Make her numb to the pain.”

“I,” she paused, “I can’t. She’s already turning into a pureblood. There’s nothing I can do, Alex.”

Then everything went black and I couldn’t feel anything anymore.

So I just stumbled across this series and I really like what you have of it so far. :) You're a really great writer and not a lot of people have done the Alex as a vampire type of story. I've read a few but this one is definitely one of the top ones I've read. :)
I'm sad it was never continued, though. If you ever find the inspiration to continue it, I will be here to read. I would like to know how Alex and Kenzie's story ends.
I am definitely subscribing, so yeah, I'll be here if you continue. :) This story definitely deserves more recognition.
