A Road Trip South

I didn’t trust Carmina, but she was our only lead to find Abigail. I needed to find her. She was the only one that would know where my mom was and where my crystal was kept. I don’t even know if Abigail would recognize me now. I’m much older than I was when she last saw me before sealing my parents away and running off into the wind.

I sat on the roof of our house, watching the sunrise. Alex had told me that purebloods aren’t able to survive in the sunlight. I knew that once I became a pureblood again, I wouldn’t be able to watch the sun rise ever again. I was going to watch every sunrise until I was restored to my pureblood status.

“Kenzie,” I turned and saw Alex coming to join me, “Why are you up here?”

“I want to watch the sun,” I told him, “Would you still love me, even if I become a pureblood again?”

“Of course I would,” he wrapped his arm around my shoulders and held me against his side, “You will still be Mackenzie Tyler. Nothing changes that. You and I are in this together.”

“I’m so different from you, though,” I looked at him intently, “You had your human life snatched away from you by Carmina. I was given a human life and I chose to give it up to be a vampire. Now I’ve found out I had my vampire life taken from me and a human life was put in it’s place.”

“Your mother took the vampire side out of you to protect you,” Alex and I looked up to find my uncle standing there.

“What are you doing here, Uncle Rick,” I asked him.

“Please call me Uncle Richard,” he replied, “I found out that you turned. I kept a top in my room. It would always spin until your heart stopped. It was my way of helping out with hiding you from Nathaniel.”

“You’re the Richard,” Alex stood up and bowed, “It’s an honor.”

“Don’t be so formal, Alex,” he placed a hand on his shoulder, “I’m not a vampire magister anymore. Not since the old days, before Nathaniel killed the rest of the council.”

“Wait we’re royal,” I asked him.

“Your mother and I were, yes,” he explained, “You father was not. He was a fifth generation pureblood. Your mother and I were the children to one of the first vampires, Markus. Nathaniel was matched with your mother to help him boost his status, and only proved to feed his lust for power.”

“Why did he kill off the council,” I asked him, “Why am I so important to him? What does Nathaniel want from me?”

“A witch told him long ago before you were born that if he wanted the power to command all vampires and rule over humans instead of hide from them, he needed to feed on the life of a daughter born from a pureblood bride. You are the daughter he needs. That was why we removed your vampire side and made you human. It was to protect you,” he answered, “But if you become a pureblood again, you can stop him. The only way to kill him is to rip his heart from his chest.”

“I can help,” Alex commented, “I can channel pain and force onto others. I could distract him to give her a clear window to take his heart.”

“Purebloods are immune to the talents of turned vampires,” Carmina joined us on the roof, “Trust me, if I could have numbed him, I’d have done centuries ago.”

“Fancy seeing you again, Carmina,” Uncle Richard greeted her with sarcasm, “Did you bargin your aide for Alex’s loyalty?”

“No,” she replied, “My switch is on. I want to settle a score with Nathaniel. That bastard made me go from a Spanish noble to a courtesan in one night. I want to help him get his heart torn out.”

“Great,” Richard sighed, “We’ll need to start looking for Abigail.”

“Already ahead of you on that, Richard,” Carmina replied, “I know right where she is.”

“Then where are we going,” I asked.

“The bayou just outside New Orleans,” she replied, “Dearest Abigail has a coven there. She’s been hiding out ever since she sank your parents in their water tomb.”
---
After our long trip south, we finally arrived to New Orleans. Alex and I decided to ditch our animal diet for human blood. We’d need all the strength we could get if we stood a chance against Nathaniel. I was fine with the idea and I was adapting well. Richard taught me how to control my portions and to compel my victims so they forgot everything. Alex was struggling, but Carmina coached him like she should have three hundred years ago.

“Now where is Abigail staying,” I asked Carmina.

“A houseboat in the swamp,” she replied, “I have to stay in the city, though.”

“Why,” Alex asked.

“I pissed her off,” she replied, “I killed a witch from her circle. Abigail holds grudges.”

We just nodded and went into the swamps on a ferry. The ferry driver that was kind enough to give us passage, took us into the darkness. I was nervous about seeing Abigail again. With my compulsion removed, I realized that I missed her. She was my best friend as a child. I remembered the stories she told me about how her family had always worked with mine since the days my grandfather first became a pureblood. He was kind of to reach out to the witches to form a pact that he’d help the other pureblood patriarchs and matriarchs maintain balance in nature.

When the ferry finally stopped, Alex helped me out first before he and Richard followed. The ferry driver rowed his boat away and left us at the houseboat. I gulped and knocked on the old wooden door.

“Who’s there,” a woman’s voice called from behind the door. The woman opened the door and I saw my old nanny standing there. Her ebony hair had streaks of silver in it. She didn’t look all that different from my old memories. But she was Abigail.

“Nanna,” I asked her.

“Oh my god,” she covered her mouth in shock, “Mackenzie. You shouldn’t even remember me. Unless...”

“I didn’t turn her,” Richard explained when her gaze fell upon him, “Please invite us so we can explain everything.”

So I just stumbled across this series and I really like what you have of it so far. :) You're a really great writer and not a lot of people have done the Alex as a vampire type of story. I've read a few but this one is definitely one of the top ones I've read. :)
I'm sad it was never continued, though. If you ever find the inspiration to continue it, I will be here to read. I would like to know how Alex and Kenzie's story ends.
I am definitely subscribing, so yeah, I'll be here if you continue. :) This story definitely deserves more recognition.
