I'm Not A Savior

X

Tonight was the night. We were spending the day relaxing, trying to help me keep my mind off the impending pain I was about to face. Alex was sucking another blood bag dry, and I swear it was his sixth. His constant feeding was scaring me. Tess was watching out the windows with Matt holding her from behind. Tay was in the bathroom talking with her mom about the spell.

I had enough of just sitting on the floor, watching everyone, that I left the cabin while Alex had his back turned. I walked off from the cabin and found the shoreline to the lake. I found some shade and sat down, grabbing rocks next me and throwing them out into the water. I wanted to clear my head so I could actually relax.

“Why did you leave,” I nearly jumped out of my skin when I heard a voice behind me. I turned around to find Alex.

“Don’t scare me like that,” I yelled at him as I hit him lightly.

“There could have been a vampire out here, waiting for prey,” he warned as he sat down, holding another blood bag.

“Why are you drinking so much,” I asked him, “Don’t you feel sick when you drink too much?”

“No,” he replied, “I’m drinking so much to build up my strength for tonight. I have to keep you and Tay safe during the ritual for the spell. There could be rogue vampires or a wolf pack we don’t know about out here.”

“And I take it drinking that,” I pointed to the bag, “Will help? I thought you avoided human blood?”

“This is animal blood,” he corrected me, “I have to have a lot of it to get anywhere close to what human blood could do for me.”

“What about Tess and Matt,” I asked him, “Don’t they have to do the same thing as you?”

“Nope,” he replied, “they can handle a mixed diet of human and animal blood. They fed on blood bags before they met us here. Matt is also still considered a newbie, so he’s stronger than us until he hits his tenth anniversary as a vampire.”

“Is that when he ends up on equal turf with you,” I asked him.

“Not even close to me,” he smirked, “I have 300 years on him. The older you get, the stronger you are when you’re fully fed. But animal blood is just a step below human blood, so I’m as strong as I could be.”

“Good to know,” Alex took a seat next to me and I leaned against his shoulder.

“What’s on your mind,” he asked, “It had to be a lot for you to come out here.”

“I’m nervous about this,” I told him as I wrapped my arms around his, “I’m afraid it won’t work and I’ll end up worse. That or I die.”

“You won’t die,” he promised, “The spell won’t affect you physically. You’ll make it through this, I promise.”
---
The sun began to set, meaning it was time to head into the woods. Alex carried me on his back so I wouldn’t trip. Tay held her mom on a leash as she led us to a clearing where we could see the moon clearly. Matt and Tess guard us, Matt was in back and Tess was up front. Once we made it to the clearing, Tay found the spot she knew to put her mom in. Her mom sat on the ground, she didn’t dare to move. I felt bad for her since she was tortured this entire time to control her bloodlust. I was scared of her. She looked so wild, and so far from a mother.

“She won’t attack you,” Alex reassured me, “She volunteered for this. She doesn’t want to be a vampire anymore.”

“Okay,” I replied shakily. I was more afraid of what could happen to me.

“Alright Alex, sprinkle this around my mom,” Tay instructed. Alex nodded his head and I watched as he winced while he sprinkled vervain sprigs in a circle around Tay’s mom.

“What’s next,” he asked.

“Tessa and Matt you need to make pentagrams around my mom and Kenzie,” Tay handed them a sack. I watched as they put down white crystals around us. I noticed that the pentagrams were connected at one point.

“Alex,” Tay called him over, “Give this to Kenzie and then give my mom this one. I marked them so you won’t forget.”

“What is that,” I asked Alex as he walked over to me.

“It’s a mix of vervain and the potion we needed to separate Lisa from your subconscious,” he explained, “Once you drink it, you’ll go unconscious so we can pull Lisa out. You will wake up, okay.”

“Please be the first sight I see,” I told him, “I don’t want anyone else next to me when I wake up.”

“I promise,” Alex kissed my forehead before he left to hand Mrs. Jardine her potion.

“Alright I think we’re ready,” Tay was holding a potion in her hand, “Now let’s begin.”
♪♫♪
Tay drank her potion first. It was the primer to get ready to tap into her mother’s lifeforce to fuel the spell. Tay signaled Kenzie to drink her potion and I watched as she fell to the ground a second after it was gone. She looked so unnatural on the ground, but I had to fight my urge to move her so I didn’t mess up the ritual.

“Alright,” Tay waited to make sure Lisa didn’t surface in Kenzie before she looked to her mother, “Drink it, Mom.”

“I love you, Taylor,” she spoke to her before she drank her potion, “goodbye, sweetheart.”

That was all it took to kill her. I no longer sensed her with us, which meant it worked. The moon appeared out of the clouds, meaning it was time to start the spell.

“Alex, you need to stay back,” Tay warned.

Soon a mist flooded the clearing. Even my vampire vision couldn’t see Kenzie laying on the ground it was so thick. We waited as we heard thunder in the distance as Tay pulled on her mother’s fading life to fuel her spell to get Lisa out. I watched as the fog clumped itself together into a ghostly figure. I knew this one far too well.

“Lisa,” I asked it once it was fully manifested.

“Alexander,” the ghost asked, “You’re still alive?”

“I am,” I replied to her, “I am so sorry.”

“It is alright, my dear,” she closed the distance between us and held my cheek, “I forgave you the instant my heart stopped. Just promise me to keep her safe. She’s a bright girl and she has a strong heart.”

“I will,” I replied.

And with that final thought, her form disappeared. Lisa was gone and would no longer haunt Kenzie. Tay fell to her knees and breathed heavily, trying to get her bearing back after using so much of her magic. I ran to Kenzie and took her into my arms, laying her across my lap gently. I wasn’t going to let her wake up without seeing me first thing.

“Tay,” I called over to her, “Can you wake Kenzie?”

“I think so,” Tay waved her fingers around and sent a magic bolt at Kenzie. She woke up instantly with a start, gasping for air like she’d woken up from a nightmare.

“Alex,” she breathed when she saw my face, “She’s gone.”

“Yeah,” I smiled and kissed her, “She’s moved on now. You’re free of her memories.”

I scooped Kenzie into my arms and led the way back to the cabin. Matt and Tess stayed behind to burn Mrs, Jardine’s body to hide our evidence. Tay dragged her exhausted body behind me.
The instant we got into the cabin, she went to her sleeping bag and fell asleep. I took Kenzie to my sleeping bag and laid her down in it before I joined her. I held her to my chest and I fell asleep with her in my arms. Come morning, we’d be back home and happy that this is over.

My only concern left was Carmina. I know she’s plotting something, but I have no idea what.
