There Ain't Nothin' I Can Do To Make You Stay

Impressions

This morning I arrived earlier at school than usual so I could avoid Ronnie and his friends. I decided to hide in the library; they wouldn't even dare to go near a book, yet alone a room full of them. As I skimmed through the books available on the shelves, I noticed the boy that watched me in class. He was sitting in the corner of the room at a small desk, flicking through a magazine. There was a spare seat next to him which, after grabbing the books I wanted, I claimed my own.
I spread my books out on the surface and opened the first one that caught my eye. This was obviously an excuse to talk to him. Ever since math class I couldn't get him out of my head, and I didn't even know who he was or what he was like. Ronnie, like always, did all of the talking about me and gave him a bad impression. The only problem I had with talking to him was that I didn't know what to say or how to start the conversation. I started to sweat and the air felt thick and warm. What if he didn't like me? What if he's homophobic? What if he's like Ronnie?
"Um, hi," I managed to breathe out. I didn't know what to say after that, but I thought that would've been the best thing to say that wouldn't make me embarrass myself. He shuffled closer to the desk and cleared his throat. "Hi there... I saw you in class."
My body tensed up and that sentence made the situation awfully awkward. "Yeah, sorry about that. I just... I don't know, sorry. I'll leave you alone forever now." I stood up and tugged my blazer and shirt when he grabbed onto my arm and pulled me back down into my chair. My face began to heat up.
"No, no, don't be sorry... It's okay. I'm Alex, by the way. You seem cool." He was the first person to ever call me cool in this school. In no way am I cool. I shook my head and laughed, "You don't mean that. I'm not cool."
"You are... I like your shirt." He pointed his finger at my chest. I looked down and realised that I was wearing my favourite Green Day shirt. I smirked and thanked him. He did look like the kind of guy who would like the same music as me.
"Your name's Jack, right?" he asked, and scratched his head. I nodded. Despite the embarrassment coming back to me, I was glad to hear he remembered my name from yesterday. "Do you need somebody to hang out with? You can hang with me if you want," I asked, since he was new and we both needed a friend. "Okay, sure," he smiled and put his magazine down. The bell rang after what seemed like forever and we both rushed to form.
