My Only One (Jalex)

Open Your Eyes

Jack's POV:

Monday morning only meant one thing: finals were here, looming perilously close on the horizon. I was freaking out, to be brutally honest. I only had one exam today though and that was music. Some might be thankful that they only had one exam but not me. I'd decided that I wanted to pursue a career that had something to do with music, whether that be a music teacher or just working in a local music shop. This exam meant the most to me and if I screwed this up, I would have screwed my future with it. No pressure then, Jack.

Alex had gone into school early that morning, him being one of the invigilators for the music exam and needing to set up the hall and make sure everything was working okay. I was left with making my own way in the spare car, a green convertible sports car.I was ready to go. Locking up on my way out, I made it over to the garage and slid into the car. The car was nice, but not a lot else. Sure, it had probably cost a lot but it wasn't me. It wasn't Alex either. The olive green paintwork teamed with cream leather seats and an old-fashioned style wooden dashboard didn't exactly scream Alex to me, more like Alex's father.

The traffic was unusually bad this morning, long trails of car after car crawling along the busy roads leading towards the business district of the city. In a way, I was kind of thankful that it was going to take me longer to get to school: it gave me more time to think and to mentally revise for the exam ahead. I was shitting myself, nerves running through my veins. I'd tried to put music on in the car but it didn't help, it only made me more anxious. I just hoped that all the revision would pay off.

-

I'd reached the school with only minutes to spare, pulling into the only car park space available, conveniently being right next to Alex's car. With Alex being the teacher of my music class, he'd called a booster session for everyone doing the exam first thing for an hour before the exam. I was the last to walk into the classroom, the air thick with worry and nerves.
"Right, so you'll find that music from the Romantic period will feature more brass instruments and there will be a lot more percussion. Ahh, Mr Barakat, nice of you to join us on such an important day. Take a seat."
Even though I knew that Alex had to act this way towards me, it still kind of hurt. I mumbled a quick 'sorry' to Alex before scurrying off towards the empty seat that I always occupied at the back, pulling out my notebook from my bag.
"Anyway, Romantic music was a lot heavier than music of the Classical ear. It used a full orchestra and it wasn't as pretty-sounding as music from the Classical era."
I drowned Alex out, replacing his speech about Romantic music with my own voice reading through the notes about the subjects I was less confident on.

I was so engrossed in my own revision, I didn't notice the bell go and the class groan, the exam literally ten minutes away.
"Good luck to everyone, you'll all do fine, I'm sure of it. Don't stress and remember that if you don't do well, I don't like tomatoes on my Big Mac. I'm joking, I'm joking. I know you'll all do great."
I felt a hand on my shoulder, pulling me out of my little trance I'd put myself in.
"Everything okay, Jay? You've zoned out the entire time."
"Y-yeah, fine."
"Hmm, we'll talk about this later. Good luck."
Alex quickly scanned the room and the doorway, making sure that no one was around before pressing his lips to my temple.
"I love you, Jay." He whispered.
"I love you too."

I got up from my seat, shoving my book in my bag and jogged off to the exam hall to catch up with the rest of my class. Mr Merrick was standing in the doorway of the hall, his muscular build filling the entire doorway, cutting off the light flowing through the door.
"All phones have to be in your bags, any electronic device found on you will result in an automatic disqualification. Put your bags at the front and then go and find your desk. Good luck."
You could cut the air with a knife right now. Thirty nervous teenagers were being slowly fed into the hall, some bouncing around on their toes, others just staying silent. I'd already put my phone in my bag so all I had to do was drop it off and find my desk. Have a last name that starts with the second letter of the alphabet did come in hand in some situations, exams being one of them. I found my desk with ease, just next to a window. On the desk was a pencil case filled with the normal things you'd expect. Footsteps could now be heard hurrying down the corridor into the hall. Alex came striding through the door, his arms full of the exam papers and some other paper.

"Right, okay then. I am going to hand out the exams whilst Mr Merrick hands you a piece of manuscript paper. Be sure to put your full name, candidate number and centre number on all pieces of paper being handed out. Once everyone has a paper, you will be given two minutes to read through the questions. The recording will then be played and that will guide you through the exam. I want complete silence and anyone found with a banned device on them or found to be communicating with others will be disqualified."
My left leg was continuously bouncing, a habit of mine that only showed when I was particularly nervous about something. Alex was pacing up and down the isles, making sure that everyone had written down the necessary information. He slowed down as he walked past me, walking closer to my desk and dropping a screwed up piece of paper into my lap before walking off like nothing happened. I smoothed out the paper and read the scrawly handwriting that was unmistakeably Alex's.
'Good luck, babe.
You'll do great, I love you.
Your Lex xoxo'
I smiled down at the note that I received, my nerves somewhat decreasing.

The two minutes for reading through had just started but I was still smiling down at the crumpled piece of paper in my lap. I folded it neatly and held it tight in the hand I didn't write with. I regarded it as a sort of good luck charm, even if it was just a torn off piece of notebook paper that had been crumpled up to the point of being barely legible.
"Okay, two minutes is up. The exam is now starting."
Alex pressed some buttons on his laptop before a very posh sounding woman's voice blared out the speakers, reading out exactly what was on the front of the exam paper.
I sat there, not paying attention to the information that being being droned out of the speakers.
This is it, I thought, my only chance at ever having a career in music.

-

An hour and a half later, Alex was walking up and down the isles, collecting the exam papers from the students. Some students had looks of dismay on their faces, others looked fairly pleased with how it had turned out. The subjects that I wasn't too sure on, luckily didn't come up. I didn't think that it had gone too bad but, then again, whenever I feel confident about the outcome of an exam, I always end up failing.
"Wait, hold up, guys. If you don't have any more exams today, you can now go home. It'll be classed as study leave anyway. Thanks, collect your bags and leave quickly please."
Disadvantage of having your surname being near the front of the alphabet, you are always one of the last to leave the exam hall. I made sure to take as long as possible getting my bag and leaving. I think Mr Merrick got what I was trying to do so he excused himself out of the hall, claiming that he needed to go to the bathroom.
"How do you think it went, Jay?"
"Eh, okay I guess. I just hope I've passed."
"You will have, don't worry. I mean, you've had me as a teacher so you're bound to have passed."
"Shut up. Honestly, you can be so cocky at times."
"You love it though."
"No, no I don't. I love you though."
Alex brought his hand up to my cheek and started to rub his thumb over the smooth skin. He leant up slightly to connect our lips in a soft, tender kiss. We pulled away shortly afterwards, concious that we were still in school and anyone could see us right now.
"Can we cuddle tonight, Lex?"
"Yeah, of course? You've got an exam tomorrow though, are you sure you don't want to be revising for it?"
"No, you were right. I do need to take breaks from it."
Alex smiled, his eyes locked with mine. His eyes were so beautiful. They were a caramel colour with flecks on honey in them. Although his eyes were significantly smaller than mine, they held so much more emotion. They seemed like they could hold the entire world's supply of emotion. They were just yet another part of Alex that I seemed to have fallen in love with.
"Are you going home now?"
"Yeah, if that's okay with you?"
"Of course it is, Jay. It's your home as much as it is mine now."
I smiled before pecking Alex on hips lips once more before walking out of the exam hall, throwing a wink over my shoulder at Alex as I walked through the door.

-

It was now seven in the evening and I was starting to get worried: Alex wasn't home yet. School let out at three and Alex is normally back well before five, even with paperwork and pupil business to take care of. I was worrying, despite the texts from Alex assuring me that all is fine and he just got held up with an angry parent. I was about to ring Alex but a call from the front door stopped me in my tracks.
"Come to the door, Jay. Open the door but you must have you eyes closed. I've got a surprise for you!"
I did so, confusion making my draw my eyebrows together. I made my way to the front door, closing my eyes as I swung the door open.
"You can open your eyes now."
