Fathom Into Constellations

One

“Abi” My mom Donna said as she shook my body from under the warm covers. “Come on sweetheart, it’s your first day at school and we have a meeting with the principle before class starts. So hurry up and get ready.” My mom smiled sweetly down at me from under my covers, I nodded before throwing myself out of bed - if anyone had seen me they would’ve thought I was hungover.

After I quickly showered and got dressed into my usual attire of a check shirt, black leggings and a black pair of converse shoes, I applied a small amount of powered foundation and some mascara before I headed downstairs to meet my mom in the kitchen who had prepared a quick breakfast.

“Thank you” I smiled as she handed me a plate of cut up apples and oranges along side a glass of water and the trusted tablet. As soon as I had finished the fruit, I gulped down the water as the tablet entered my mouth. I hate taking tablets, I was hard to swallow such a large capsule.

As my mom and I entered Dulaney high school, I couldn’t help but notice all the people that would soon become my peers and some may even become acquaintances, I liked having people to talk to but sometimes too close is, too close enough. We sat outside the principles office for what seemed like forever, I sat picking my freshly painted nails soon enough we were called in.

It was awkward sitting in the principles office it felt like I had done something wrong because this wasn’t a normal procedure, normal students get their time table and off to homeroom they go but not me. The room was dully lit and covered in loads of certificates with a large photo of last years graduating class, I couldn’t help but smile - graduating and going to college that would be a dream come true. I sat for what felt like hours listening to the principle and my mom talking away, I didn’t dare into the conversation because well it wasn’t a conversation that I have came to terms with yet.

“Abigail. A student from your English class is going to meet you outside my office the now.” The principle said suddenly. ‘Thank god’ I thought as I picked up my backpack and walked outside the office. My mom and I never said goodbye to each other because goodbye means going away forever and not returning and I had ever intention of returning.
“Hi, you must be Abigail. I’m Rian and obviously I’m in your English class. We can be friends and you can meet my friends.” Rian was sweet looking and had an amazing smile but what caught my attention the most was how genuine he sounded but that wasn’t part of the routine. I couldn’t turn him down so I nodded instead of opening my mouth. The class would last 3 hours because it was an advanced English class. The class wasn’t as full as I thought it would be, it basically had around 10 people in it. It was comfy to be around not this many people. “So I know its your first day Abigail but the class assignment is to write about yourself. Anything you want; your hopes, ambitions… Shock us Abigail.” Mr Harrison laughed at his joke as he passed me the passing criteria. I forced a laugh, he wouldn’t want to know about me. “I’ll definitely shock you thats for sure.”

As soon as the class finished Rian joined my side once again as we headed to lunch, I really hope he wasn’t keen on his friendship thing. “Need help on starting your assignment ?” He asked from across the bench as his 2 male friends joined us “Alex and Jack” He introduced them both of them waved grinning like fools. “No thank you. I’m Abigail.”

Lunch was decent but I soon learned Rians friends were cool, they seemed super nice and very cute. Definitely people I would like around me in my life. The rest of the day flew by as before I knew it, it was 9 o’clock at night, I logged onto my laptop and opened up Facebook and iMessage to be instantly added by a stranger.

Alex- Hi it’s Alex from school. Rian gave me your name so I guess I found you.

I smiled at the laptop screen, it was nice to have someone who wasn’t aware of the truth.

Abi- Awh, hi. You found me, well done.
Alex- I know, it took ages. There are a lot of Abigail Keegan’s.
Abi- Well no wonder it took ages then, my name isn’t Abigail online. Abi is quicker to type.
Alex- You’re interesting, Abigail. Something mysterious with you.
Abi- You couldn’t handle the truth.
Alex- Will I ever know the truth about you? Will any of us?
I thought about it for a long time, it was safer to keep distance that way less people get hurt, less people feel the pain, less people feel the loss of losing something they cannot regain.

Abi- No.

With that I logged off my laptop and threw it to the bottom of my bed. I pulled out my notebook for school and started pre-writing the assignment .

'Hello, my name is Abigail Zara Keegan. I am 17 years old and I do not have dreams, I do not have ambitions because every dream and ambition I had was shattered 3 months ago but I do not dwell, we have the choice to sugarcoat who we are or we can leave ourselves bare, for all to see and I want you all to see me. I am not who you thought you I am, I am not mysterious - in-fact I am boring but I do not live in fear. '
