The Selfless and the Brave

After I dropped Alex off at the nurses I headed back towards the trains to take me home. All I could think about was how much of an ass Matt was. Why the hell did he do that to Alex? He didn't deserve the be treated like that! That’s when I decided I was going to talk some sense into Matt. I’m sick and tired of him doing this crap.

I know, I know, but you stayed out of it until now! Yeah, but now it’s personal. There is just something about Alex that makes me want to protect him. Even if that means fighting my best friend over it.

Once I got back I went straight through the doors of the Dauntless headquarters and up to some girls who were whispering in a group. They all quieted down once I approached them and some of them smiled and waved seductively towards me, which I just brushed off.

“Have any of you seen where Matt ran off to? I need to talk to him.”

“He went towards the Pit with a couple other people. By the way Jack, why did you help that Stiff back there?”

I just shrugged and walked off. I wasn't up for talking to them, I had bigger problems to worry about. I walked towards the Pit and saw Matt there with two other guys I didn't recognize.

“Matt! I need to talk to you.”

“Hey Jack! You come to apologize?”

“Apologize?”

“Yeah, for being a complete ass at lunch today. You finally figured out that, that Stiff is a nobody?”

Him and his friends started to laugh and I swear there had to be steam coming out of my ears. I grabbed Matt by his shirt like I had at lunch and they all shut up.

“Listen here Matt. I want to continue being your friend but you need to stop. I’m getting sick of you treating others like crap! Just leave them alone and worry about yourself, alright?”

I let go of him, with a little shove for good measure. As I turned to walk away Matt spoke up.

“What? Is the little Stiff Mute your boyfriend or something?”

They all started laughing and that was the last straw. I didn't care anymore if Matt has been my friend for years. Right now, he wasn't acting like one. I turned around, grabbed him by his arm and punched him square in the jaw.

He went down, grabbing his jaw as he sat up, looking at me with shock written all over his face. The other had stopped laughing and just started to watch.

“If I ever see you touch him again, or even look at him, I’ll break your nose Flyzik!”

He got up and glared at me before leaving, his little possy following close behind. I sighed and immediately felt bad for hitting him. He was my best friend, but I guess now he isn't anymore. I just wish I knew why he hated Alex so much.

I walked back out and sat on one of the chairs in the main room. People whispered as they walked by, stealing glances at me, I guess everyone knows what just happened then. Great. I sighed again and rested my head back, all I could think about was Alex. I didn't even try to stop them anymore.

I hope he’s okay, I can’t wait to see him tomorrow.
