The Selfless and the Brave

Chapter Five

*Alex's POV*

I woke up slowly, blinking to let my eyes adjust to the light of the room. I sat up very slowly, trying to ignore the pounding in my head. I glanced around the room to see the Amity nurse at her desk, scribbling something on some form. I continued my observation of the room, and suddenly I saw.. Me.

I quickly looked down at my lap to avoid the mirror, the instrument of vanity that all Abnegation were supposed to avoid. I was being extremely selfish today. What was wrong with me? Why couldn't I be the perfect little Abnegation boy like Tom had been? It was then that I realized I was visibly shaking.

"What is with you Abnegation and mirrors?" the Amity nurse questioned teasingly. I looked up at her, avoiding looking in the direction of said mirror, and shrugged. The nurse sighed, then grabbed the form she had been writing on and sat in a chair beside the bed I was sitting on.

"Okay, so the Dauntless boy that brought you in told us all he could about what happened, but we would like to hear from the victim himself about the incident."

What? I thought. A Dauntless had brought me in? Why? I was just some stupid Abnegation, a stupid Stiff, who would bring me to the infirmary? Suddenly, I saw fingers snapping in front of my face.

"Hello?" the nurse called firmly, but sweetly. "I need to hear your side of the story." she laughed. I looked at her desperately before searching for something to write on, and write with.

"OH!" she gasped, causing me to jump. "I am so sorry, the Dauntless boy mentioned that you were mute, how stupid of me!" She then jumped up out of her chair and grabbed a whiteboard and a whiteboard marker off of the counter behind her and handed it to me.

'Thank you' was the first thing I wrote, and I gave her a small smile.

"No problem, no problem," she laughed, waving her hand in the air. "Just tell me what happened"

I did the best I could to explain what had happened, starting off with this morning, all the way up to when I had blacked out. The Amity nurse listened, well, read intently, writing a few things down herself once in a while. When I had finished telling her about the incident, she sighed and leaned back in her chair.

"I'll never understand the Dauntless," she said, readjusting her bright red scarf. "Why can't they just get along?"

Easy for you to say, I thought. You're Amity. You're raised amongst peace and harmony.

"Okay, well you can go I guess. There is only one class left of the day though, and you've definitely had a rough first day. Take it easy, okay, Alex?" She smiled sweetly and got up to open the door for me. I tried to hand her back the whiteboard, but she just shook her head.

"No, no, you can keep it. You need it more than I do," she insisted. I tried to protest, but she shoved it back into my hands.

"Seriously, you Abnegation need to have some things for yourselves." She smiled again and pushed me out the door. I stopped and quickly wrote, 'Wait, what's your name?'

"Jenna," she replied. "Now off with you!" she laughed, and gently pushed me into the hallway.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I stumbled off of the bus at the end of the day, getting swarmed and pushed around by the other Candor and Abnegation that were on the bus. I quickly walked towards my block, identical to every other one in the Abnegation faction, to my boring gray house, identical to every one around it. I snuck in quietly, trying to avoid any attention. I slipped off my bland gray sneakers, aligned perfectly with my parents'. So they were home. I turned towards my room and nearly ran into my mother.

"Where have you been?" she asked.

'School' I wrote. 'I came home as quick as I could.'

"And where did you get that?" she questioned further, pointing to my whiteboard.

'The nurses office' I wrote nervously, my hand shaking slightly.

"Oh, right, you were at the nurses office," she said quietly, menacingly. I began writing, trying to explain, but she knocked the whiteboard out of my hands onto the floor. Not that it was too hard, I was shaking so badly I probably would have dropped it soon anyway.

"You caused a scene!" she shouted. "You're supposed to stay helpful and quiet!" Ironic, considering she is currently shouting in my face. But I kept my mouth shut. I heard her call at my father to bring his belt. My vision began to get fuzzy from panic. Not again, I thought. Not this again. I couldn't take another beating from my father. I had already gotten one from Matt. I gripped the counter for support as my father walked into the room, belt in hand.

He walked to where I was standing and pushed me into the counter, causing me to fall to the ground. I let out a silent gasp of pain as I fell.

"Take off your shirt," my father demanded. I did as I was told. He then kicked me to the ground. I felt immense pain in my ribs, and bit my lip hard to avoid making any sound. My mother began yelling obscenities at me and my dad unraveled the belt in his hand. I bit my lip to hard, and tasted the coppery flavor of blood.

"This is for your own good," my father said, and brought the belt down on my back, and felt the first of many stinging wounds on my back.
