The Selfless and the Brave

Chapter Eleven

I opened my eyes slowly, not really remembering most of the night’s events that occurred. I then felt something shift from under my own body, no, not something - someone. Slowing lifting up my head, I looked over the features of the person. Jack. All of what happened last night came flooding back to my mind.

I moved off of him slowly, and got up from the bed, feeling like utter shit. My whole body was aching with pain and I could barely move. I didn’t think standing up right now would be a good move, so I just sat on the edge of my bland bed. Looking over a bit at Jack, still sleeping, I got to thinking. Why is he being so nice to me? Why would he care so much about my well being? My train of thought was cut off by a groaning sound, and then a voice. “G’morning, Lex.” I gave him a small smile and then looked away. “Do you know what time it is?”

I looked out my small window, trying to see where the sun was. I then reached over, slowly, as to not cause myself any more pain, and grabbed my notebook.

‘5:30am?’

“Shit, my train usually comes around 5:45. I won’t be able to make it.” He got up from the bed, and put on his shoes. “Hey, my train normally passes by this area around 6. You think I could catch it from here?”

‘I guess.’

“You know, you could get on it with me. I’ll make sure no one messes with you.” He got back down on the bed, this time sitting right next to me. I wanted to tell him no. That is wasn’t a good idea. But that would be selfish of me. So I nodded my head a bit, still looking down. “I know it might be scary for you, but Matt or his friends won’t touch you. I promise you.” I nodded again. “Meet me outside by the tracks, I’ll let you get ready to leave.” He stood up, offering his hands to me and helped me up. Jack then pulled me into a gentle hug and told me he would see me in a few minutes.

He went over to the window and opened it, letting the cold air in. But just before he stepped out, he spoke again. “Hey Alex?” I looked over to him. “Be careful. I don’t want you getting hurt anymore.” I looked back down at the ground, not really knowing how to act to such kindness. Because I guess I’m just that selfish.

Jack left out the window and I went over and put on a clean, bland gray shirt. Leaving my normal, boring room I went down the stairs slowly. Feeling pain erupt through my body with each and every step I took. As I entered the kitchen, my mother spoke. “Good morning, sweetie.” I gave her a small smile.

“Good morning, son. You going to eat before you leave today?” My father questioned, as he looked up from his normal, tasteless meal.

No.’ And then I fled out of the house, after putting on my gray shoes.

Walking to the train tracks, picking up my pace a bit as I heard the sounds of it coming. I knew this was a bad idea, but I couldn’t say no. I have been selfish enough times in my life, just in the past couple of days. I saw Jack standing where he told me to meet him, looking over at me. I went up to him, just as the train was passing by. Before I could react to anything, Jack put his arm around my waist and we were soon being pulled into the train in one swift motion. “You okay?” I nodded my head and looked down, not wanting to see the stares from the other Dauntless students.

“What the fuck is this, Jack?” A voice spoke.

“Stay the hell away from him, Matt.” Jack shot back.

“What is he doing on our train?” I wanted nothing more than to be off of your train, I said in my head.

“We don’t own the train. Anyone can ride it. Now, kindly fuck off.” With Jack saying those words, the train the went fully silent, and no one talked the rest of the ride.

I could tell by the grounds outside that we were arriving to the school, and quick. Which caused me to remember how the Dauntless actually got off the train. I started to shake a bit, no knowing what to do. “Okay Alex, we are going to have to jump. I know you have seen us do it before. But now you have to do it. Alright?” I didn’t move. How did they do this everyday? How could they not have a single bit of fear in them? “Shit. We got to go now!” Jack grabbed onto my arm and the next thing I knew, I was being pulled out of a full speed moving train.

Too shocked to actually jump, I missed the top of the building. But, landing on the edge, Jack pulled me up. “That wasn’t too bad, right?” He chuckled a bit. “Are you okay?” I looked up and smiled a bit with a slight nod.

Notes

Wow, uh, well, hi.
My name is Breanna, but I mostly go by Bree.
And, well, I'm the new co-author! :)
I am honestly in love with this story, I have been since the day I found it, I would say about a year ago?
Anyways, I know this chapter in totally different from the writing styles of the old author, but I am going to try my best to make sure this story turns out the way it was planned.
This chapter is a bit short, and I normally write longer chapters for my other stories, but I was just so excited to be an author of this story, so I wanted to get a chapter out quick for you guys xD
I do hope you enjoyed it though, and I want to thank Anna so much for letting me help her out with this story<3
