The Selfless and the Brave

Chapter Ten

I decided to follow Alex. I know it sounded super creepy but I just had to find out what was going on. I watched as he actually LEFT SCHOOL EARLY! Wow what a rule breaker… I followed him all the way home and watched him from his window; again I know, creepy. That’s when it happened.

His own father barged into his room with his mother close behind. All I could do was watch in shock as his father hit and kicked him mercilessly. Then he shouted something at him that I didn’t pick up. I watched as Alex turned around, took off his shirt, and received three new whip lashes onto his back. I was steaming by this point. What kind of father would do this? Is this what punishment was for Abnegations?

I waited until his parents left him room. Alex didn’t move. Just stayed curled up in the corner of his room, as if that would protect him from the pain and fear he just went through. I swallowed back the vomit that wanted to rise up as I thought of that. I slowly moved towards his window, tapped on it, and hoped that I didn’t scare him in the process.

“Alex. C'mon man let me in it's cold as balls out here."

He turned slowly towards me, his face bone white. He slowly got up, wincing in pain as he made his way towards the window and opened it. I immediately shot through, closed the window behind me, spun Alex around, and examined the damage. He tried to struggle but I just held on tighter. Hopefully not enough to hurt him but enough to tell him that moving wasn’t an option.

“I can’t believe it was your own family who did this to you.”

It came out as just a whisper but I saw Alex hang his head, his shoulder gently shaking. I carefully led him to the bed and sat him down, then proceeded to walk towards his door. I saw something lightly hit the door before I could open it and I turned around. He had his notebook in his hand, holding it up for me to see.

‘Please don’t go out there.’

“I’m just going to get a towel or something to clean you up so that doesn’t get infected.”

He looked worried but didn’t write anything else so I proceeded to quietly go out his bedroom door. I could hear his parents downstairs, probably acting like they didn’t just hurt their own son.

Assholes…

I looked across the hall to the bathroom, I knew because the door was cracked open a bit. I quietly walked over and into it, shutting the door behind me before raiding the cabinet. There was no mirror in here… weird.

I found the gauze and band aids, along with wetting down a hand towel. I made my way back into his room, closing the door behind me. He looked up at me with a sad expression then held up his notebook again.

‘They’ll know I took that stuff.’

My breath caught at the thought but I shook it out of my head.

“You need this Alex. Now please turn around.”

He did so without so much as a second thought. I gently got on his bed behind him and started cleaning his wounds. I expected it to hurt like a bitch but he didn’t make a sound, didn’t move, didn’t write for me to stop. Once I was done I helped him get his shirt back on then pulled him into a gentle hug.

“I’m so sorry Alex. I honestly don’t know what to do. I want to help, please tell me how I can”

He nodded, didn't say a word, and gently hugged me back. Making me give a small smile. Then a thought popped into my head.

“Will your parents be back up tonight?”

‘No, they normally just go to bed.’

I nodded then led him over to his bed, making him lay down and get under the blankets. I then went around to the other side and started to get in with him. I saw his eyes widen and him reach for his notebook but I took it away.

“Just allow it for tonight Lex, okay?”

He seemed shocked by the nickname but gave a slow nod and laid back down. I got in, moved closer to him and pulled him to my chest. He felt so right pressed up against me. I watched the slow rise and fall of his chest become slower and soon he was asleep. I sighed and looked up at his grey ceiling. With one last though that I knew would haunt me, I slowly closed my eyes and let sleep take over.

How can I help fix this boy who is already so broken?
