All My Life I've Been Searching For Something

Rian had called me and told me to meet him and Cass near what was our new form room. I walked through the halls, listening carefully to the new surroundings. I could hear people chattering and laughing to either side of me and I suddenly felt extremely self-conscious. Did they all have their sight and were laughing at me? I shook my head, trying to shake away my thoughts. I was being stupid. I was just nervous because it was my first day, I concluded. Everyone was probably feeling the same way.


I held onto the strap of my bag with my hand, carrying on making my way to where Rian had said. It was pretty amazing how everyone managed to get by without guide dogs. It was as if everyone was super aware of everything and everyone. Logically, people should be bumping into everything all the time but that just didn't happen.

I was growing more excited than nervous about my first day as time went by. It'd be fun, right? Plus, I might make some cool new friends. I might even meet my soul mate and that was definitely something to be happy about.


Suddenly, as I walked through the corridors lost in my thoughts, I bumped into something. I heard some things fall to the floor at the same time that I ended up on it as well. The something that I'd bumped into made a noise so I figured it was a person. Great job, Alex.

"Why don't you fucking watch where you're going?" A voice said. I stayed silent for a moment, not knowing what to say. Apparently, people bumping into things DID happen, just not a lot.

"....pardon?"

"Oh fuck. I've done it again, haven't I?"

"Done what?"

"Well...I watch old movies, right? Well...listen to old movies. And I've picked up old-fashioned phrases like 'watch where you're going' and I keep accidentally saying them, forgetting that most people who I actually interact with are blind so they make no sense" I heard him pick up the things he'd dropped, books presumably, as he spoke. He had a peculiar accent, one that I hadn't heard in real life before.

"Oh. Well then, yeah. You did it again" I laughed as he did too.

"Sorry. And I'm sorry for walking into you. I was just thinking about something. Here" he found my hand with his and helped me up.

"I'm Alex, by the way" I said, deciding that this guy sounded like someone I could be friends with.

"Nice name" he replied before letting go of my hand, not even realising he was still holding it before he let go.


I then heard him walk away as I stood opening and closing my mouth like a fish, at a loss for words. He didn't even tell me his name! Did he not want to be friends with me that badly? What a dick. He could have at least made an excuse or something.
