Chapter Thirty-Eight: The Beach
"Oh come on, Rebecca!" Jack said whilst laughing, "It wasn't that scary!"
"You try getting scared easily, Barakat," I said with a pout. Jack only continued to laugh.
We were watching an episode of Supernatural. I had gotten scared by a jump scare, thus causing Jack to laugh at me.
He kissed the pout off my lips, & I smiled as I repositioned myself next to him. After the show was over, Jackie came downstairs complaining that she couldn't sleep.
"You want mommy to read you a story?" I asked, to which she nodded. Jack switched the television off & gave me a goodnight kiss. I led Jackie upstairs & into her room, & I turned on the lamp that was beside her bed. She crawled back in bed as I scanned her bookshelf, eyes settling on 'The Cat In The Hat.'
"Is Dr. Seuss alright, sweetie?" I asked.
"Yeah," she replied quietly, & I pulled the book out of its space. I sat on the edge of her bed, & I opened the book.
Halfway through the book, she fell asleep, so I quietly closed the book & placed it on her bookshelf gently. I looked at her for a minute, noticing how peaceful she looked.
Why didn't she care that I was just now being her mother? Why didn't she care that she didn't know her real father? Did she know that Jack wasn't her real father to begin with?
I sighed & turned the lamp off.
"I wish I knew what you were thinking, baby girl," I whispered, & I stood up & left the room, crossing the hall into mine & Jack's. Jack looked over at me mid way through taking his jeans off, & he stumbled, falling on his ass, causing me to laugh. I rushed over & helped him up, & he removed his jeans fully, only standing there in his boxer briefs.
"How is she?" He asked as he pulled the covers back on his side of the bed.
"Asleep," I replied as he got in bed.
"What's wrong, Becca?" Jack asked, & I looked at him sadly.
"I'm worried that when she's a teenager... she'll... she'll-"
"Hate me because I'm not her real father?" Jack asked, & I nodded sheepishly.
"Look... even if Jackie does end up hating me, it doesn't mean I'll be any less of a father towards her. It doesn't mean I'll leave you, okay? I love both of you, & both of you girls are my world, okay? & when we have a child of our own, I'm gonna love the fuck out of it. You know why?" Jack asked.
"Why?" I asked.
"Because I'll be with you. I love you, Rebecca, & I cannot wait to marry you," Jack said. I smiled, & I quickly changed into my pajamas: a huge shirt & my underwear. I pulled the covers back on my side of the bed, & I turned off the lamp that was on, & I crawled in next to Jack, who immediately pulled me against him.
"I love you," Jack whispered with a kiss to my cheek.
"I love you too, Jack-o," I whispered, & I kissed his lips softly before getting comfy in his arms.
Jack always knew what to say.
