The City Comes Alive When We're Together

The Hospital

A few days pass, and Megan still isn't awake. It's been three days to be exact. So she could've woken up yesterday, but she hasn't. I have been more depressed seeing her in the hospital bed than I have been my entire life. I barely eat or drink, I don't even shower, hell I haven't even left the room unless I had to for doctors to take tests. I do have school, so all week I've went to school and came back to the hospital and slept here. I then wake up and repeat the process.
Days continue to pass, and it has now been 6 days since she came to the hospital. I just got here from school and luckily for me, it's Friday so I don't have to leave. They told us it wouldn't be longer than a week, so she has to be up by tomorrow. I start to cry under all the stress I've been under. I just met Megan a little over a week ago and already, I feel like I'm in love with her. I know it's crazy, but her and I have been under so much since we met and I can't help but care and worry for her and the idea that I might lose her breaks my heart. Just then, the nurse walks in.
"Hey Jack. How you feeling today?" The nurse asks me in a sweet tone.
"Terrible. I just want her back already." I sniffle from the tears. "Do you need to do tests?"
"Oh hun, I know it's been hard." The nurse responds. She had the sweetest voice in the world as she spoke to me. "No, we don't need to take any more tests. But, we've talked it out and we've decided that Megan's ready to come off all of the meds." I actually forgot that they have to take her off of meds before she wakes up. Knowing that she's coming off of them today makes me extremely excited. I can't wait to be able to talk to her, hear her laugh, see her beautiful face light up.
"So, when will she wake up after you take her off of the meds?" I ask her concerned.
"Well, we're going to be taking her off of them in a few minutes, so she could wake anytime between tonight and early tomorrow afternoon." She explains. "There's just one thing. No offense, but I want you to go in the bathroom and wash up. You haven't showered all week and believe me, Megan's going to want to wake up to a handsome, clean Jack not a dirty, icky Jack. As soon as you get out of the shower, we will take her off of the meds." She does have a point.
I grab some clean clothes and walk into the bathroom. While I stand in the shower, I feel a bunch of the stress I've been under escape my body. Looks like I needed this shower more than I thought. I took a quick shower so that I could get Megan off of those meds as soon as possible. I get dressed and go back out into her room where the nurse was still waiting for me.
"Feel better?" She asks me.
"Tons." I answer smiling.
"Well, you ready?" I know exactly what she's asking me and the answer didn't even hesitate in my mind.
"Of course." I smile. I can't stop smiling now that I know that Megan will be able to talk to me and smile again. I watch as the nurse removes the IVs with the exception of one in her arm helping her stay well. After they were done, I took one look at her. She was the girl I met a week ago all over again.
"Alright, she's all set. She should wake up sometime tonight, no later than tomorrow." The nurse begins to explain. "When she wakes up, she may be happy, she may not. It depends how she reacts to being here. Just, whatever the case may be, be there for her."
"Of course I will." I answer. "Thank you so much." The nurse smiles as she walks out of the room. That night I ate a better dinner than I have in days. After I ate, I laid on the couch and kept watching Megan to see if she's close to waking up.
It is now midnight and I'm still up waiting to see if Megan wakes up. As I sit here I start to sing All The Small Things by Blink 182 out of boredom. I start to sing the lyrics, 'Watching, waiting, comiserating.' then I get to the chorus, 'say it ain't so, I will not go, turn the lights off, carry me home'. Then, I hear a murmur from Megan's bed.
"Babe?" I get up and run to the side of her bed, instantly running my fingers through her hair. Another small murmur escapes. "Megs, you awake?" A breath escapes from her nose. "Please wake up baby girl." After repeating things to try and convince her to wake up, her eyelids start to flutter.

@backseat serenader I'm sorry :( This specific story will probably be finished up today, but I plan to maybe make a 2nd book to it, almost like a sequel. :) I promise to let all of you know when I post it!
