Starlight

XVII

They avoided each other for the next week. As much as it was possible in Jack’s little apartment. They hid from each other in different rooms, Alex trying not to think about how much he liked those three words coming from Jack and Jack trying not to think about anything even in the slightest bit related to Alex.

It was hard. It was hard enough considering Jack’s promise to himself, but now there was another fact – Alex was angel and Jack was scared. Scared of himself and his feelings. Sure, he told Alex that he didn’t mean it like that and Alex said that he understands it, but Alex’s behavior said otherwise. He wouldn’t be avoiding Jack if he’d believed his stuttered apology slash explanation.

And he was also kind of scared of Alex. He didn’t know anything about angels and how they act in different situations. For once internet didn’t provide him with such information. According to the internet angels were supernatural creatures or something like that and mostly helped people. He could search for something more, but after the supernatural part he’s not sure he can believe what internet has to say about angels.

What if he tried to kiss Alex and he didn’t approve on that or what if, just what if, they went any further and Alex can’t control his wings? They look pretty intimidating and Alex himself had mentioned that sometimes it is hard to control them fully. They could do some serious damage to anyone including Jack and he doesn’t want that.

And how can he even know if Alex is interested in him like that? He’s an angel and angels are not as stupid as humans. At least they’re not supposed to be. What Jack didn’t understand was how strong the bond between angel and its human can be. It just was beyond his understanding how two completely different…species, you may call, can transfer their emotions and thoughts to each other, sometimes without any intention of doing so and how they can participate in each other’s life’s without being near the other.

They both thought that their bond was broken. That it didn’t work in this world and that they will never be able to become one again. Not that Jack knew about that before the bond was broken. He didn’t know about it before, but now when it was gone he felt that something’s missing. What they both didn’t know was the way how to fix their bond.

“Jack, we haven’t gone out in…two months? Three? It’s too long!” Rian pleaded while rummaging through his fridge.

“You weren’t allowed to even walk and you wanted to go out?”

“But now I can and we should go somewhere,” he closed the fridge and turned around to face Jack who was sitting on the couch, kind of watching tv, “where’s Alex?”

“In the bedroom,” Jack answered, trying to sound as uninterested as possible.

“Ooh, in the bedroom. I get it,” he smirked.

“No, you don’t get it. He just wanted to spend some time alone,” he glared back at Rian.

“Right. After doing what?”

“Rian!”

“Okay, okay, but I was serious about going out thing. Alex should come with us too.”

“Mhm…”

“Jack, I’m serious. If you’re not going to ask him then I will,” Rian came to stand next to the couch, trying to look intimidating.

“Fine. I’ll talk to him,” he huffed and got up from couch, “but don’t be surprised if he says no.”

“Jack?” Rian called after him, before he could reach the bedroom, “what’s going on with you two?”

“Nothing,” came short answer before he lightly knocked on the doors and pushed them open.

His eyes looked around the small room and landed on Alex who was curled in his bed cuddling one of his pillows, “Alex?”

“What?” he didn’t look up just tightened his grip on the pillow.

“Rian’s here,” he said quietly, walked to the bed and sat down.

“I know. I heard him.”

“Mhm. He wants us to go out with him.”

“That’s not exactly how he said it,” Alex mumbled.

“You heard that?”

“I said – I heard him.”

That only meant that he heard Rian’s usual teasing about their relationship, “Right. So you’ll come?”

“I don’t know. You know how I am around people.”

“I know but you can’t spend the rest of your life in my apartment. You need to get used to people being around you.”

“I know,” he sighed, “but I have nothing to wear,” he finally turned around and looked at Jack.

Thinking about all of the clothes he had, he remembered one pair of jeans he had. He had bought them almost six months ago but never wore them. He got up from the bed to find the jeans, folded like they were in the shop and placed under the pile of his other jeans. They even still had the price tag, “those should be good on you. They’re size too small for me but for you…should be good. I wanted to take them back or give to someone else, but…I don’t know why I didn’t do that.”

“Because I said that to you,” Alex was sitting up in the bed and looking at Jack expectantly.

“No you didn’t. I didn’t even know you ba…ohh…” Jack looked back at Alex, “well then, these are for you,” he tossed them to Alex, “and you can chose some shirt. Whichever you want.”

“Fancy or not?”

“Not,” and with that he left the room. He didn’t need the image of half-naked Alex in his mind.

“And what about her?” Rian pointed to girl with dark brown, shoulder length hair. She was wearing the skinniest jeans they both had ever seen combined with black and white blouse.

“She wouldn’t go out with you even if you had…”

“She would go out with you. Don’t listen to him,” Alex interrupted, “just because he’s too afraid of real relationship doesn’t mean you can’t get that girl.”

“Someone needed to say that,” Rian laughed, receiving death glare from Jack.

Alex smiled triumphantly at Jack, but received the same death glare in return. Sure, maybe what Alex said was true and he was afraid of relationship, but that doesn’t give him any right to point it out. And maybe he shouldn’t take it too seriously because Alex is pretty close to being completely drunk. It’s his first time having alcohol and maybe he had a little too much for the first time.

“I think it’s enough for you today,” Jack pulled his half empty glass away from him.

“But it tastes good,” Alex whined.

“You won’t say that tomorrow.”

“But Jaaack! I want it!”

“I can buy you one if you want.”

Rian snapped his head toward the new voice so fast he could’ve broken his neck, Jack’s fingers tightened around the glass he took from Alex, but Alex’s whole body tensed as he felt warm hand on his lower back and hot breath on his neck.

“What’s your name, cutie?” his hair was too blond, his eyes were too blue, his clothes were too perfect and his voice was too sugary. For Jack it was too obvious. He didn’t care what Alex’s name was. He won’t remember his name anyway. He will ask his name at least three more times and Alex being as polite as he is will repeat his name with shy smile on his face. He will buy him few drinks, make sure he’s wasted and then invite him over and then he will have some fun with Alex, in perfect scenario Alex will get something out of it too but in usual scenario he will wake up with horrible hangover at some strangers bed.

“Umm…Alex,” and there goes his shy smile.

“Well, Alex, how about that drink?”

Jack threw a quick glance at Rian that would mean nothing to someone walking by, but it included silent conversation between the two.

“I think that it’s time for us to leave and Alex have had enough drinks for this night,” Rian replaced strangers hand with his own and pulled Alex away from him, tightening his grip on his waist when he felt Alex stumbling over his legs.

“Thanks,” Alex muttered when the cold night air hit his face.

“You’re welcome. And Jack,” he turned to look at Jack, after he’d pushed Alex inside of his car and closed the doors behind him, “if you like him so much then just fucking tell him that! You should’ve been in my place and pull him away from that guy and you would be hero of the day for Alex not me!”

“You’re not hero of the day. He probably won’t even remember that in the morning. And I don’t like him that way,” Jack mumbled.

“Oh please! I know you for more than ten years and I know that look in your eyes when you look at him! When was the last time you slept with someone? I bet it was before Alex came in your life, huh?”

“I don’t…”

“Just get over yourself and admit it! Admit it to yourself that you like him. It’s not the end of the world to like someone.”

“I never said that it was.”

“Then say it,” he almost hissed, “and I’m pretty sure that Alex sees it too, he’s not stupid and you’re pretty obvious about it.”

“Yes, he knows it because I was stupid enough and said it to him! I said that I love him and he’s been avoiding me since then. He was avoiding me in my own apartment! He was alone in my room because he doesn’t want to be in the same room with me! I have admitted it and what did I get from it? Nothing!”

“You really said that to him?”

“Yes. And then I fucked it all up.”

“Oh god, of course you did. What did you say?”

“That I didn’t mean it like that,” he mumbled, looking over Rian’s shoulder and catching sight of Alex’s brown eyes staring back.

“You’re and idiot, Jack.”

“I know.”

“Tomorrow you will talk to him, okay? He’s not the best to talk with right now so tomorrow. Got it?”

“Yes,” he felt like five year old whose mother had scolded him about being mean to other kids.
