Maybe Next May

He had agreed to talk to me! Thank god. I hadn't slept well this entire time. Cass and Rian wouldn't even talk to me, not that I blame them. I just wished they would tell me if he was okay or not. I knew why they didn't though, they wanted me to feel bad. It's all my fault, I never should have listened to Heath and Lisa. I'm a moron.

~Flashback~

I was walking down the hallway that morning to go to practice. Once I got to the feild I saw Lisa talking with Heath. What the hell? I slowly made my over and they noticed my presence.

"Alex! Just the guy I was waiting around to see."

"Uh... Whats up Heath?"

"Lisa here told me you're hanging around that Jack kid. Listen, he isn't in our group dude and he never will be. I think you need to show him that."

"What? Jack isn't a bad guy you two. What's so bad with me hanging around him? It's not like it's hurting me."

"Look, either you beat the shit out of him and his dumb-ass friend or me and the team will. You understand?"

"Why are you doing this? Lisa, come on, help me out here!"

"Oh no! I totally agree with Heath. I'll even film it if they beat him to a pulp. I don't like him Alex."

My mind was racing and my chest felt tight. I couldn't hurt Jack! But... if it was me I could control it better. Maybe I could even let Jack and Rian know beforehand and we could fake it. Yeah, that's perfect...

"Oh, and it needs to be done today. Don't want you making plans behind our backs right?"

Heath laughed and hit my shoulder playfully. He thought this was all just a big joke. I was pissed but... I couldn't let him and the guys touch Jack. They'll put him in the hospital. No way...

"Alright, I'll do it before first bell."

"Good man, Alex."

Heath and Lisa smiled at me before Lisa went to the bleachers, Heath and I went off the practice.

I walked down the halls with Lisa and Heath on either side of me. I was going straight for Rians locker because I knew Jack came in a bit later. I saw Cass and Rian standing there and Cass met my eyes. She gave me a questioning look. Here goes nothing, I'm so sorry.

I walked right up to Rian and punched him in the nose. Apparently too hard because next thing I knew it was shooting blood and he was on the ground. I looked down at my hand as Cass started to scream at me, I could barley hear it.

Next thing I knew Jack was pushing through the crowd to see what I had done. He looked between Lisa and Heath then his hurt and confused eyes locked on mine.

"Alex? What the hell?"

No Jack, I'm so sorry.

"Ha! Looks like it's your lucky day Gaskarth. Two nerds to beat up. Go on, do it."

Of course he was making this look like something I was wanting to do. I closed my eyes for a second, making sure not to give anything away, before I moved towards him.

"Look at how pitiful he looks!"

It took everything in me not to turn around and hit them right then and there, they started to laugh. I didn't find anything about this funny.

"Alex, please don't do this."

Oh god Jack...

I raised my fist and threw the first punch, Cass screamed. He fell to the floor but not very well because I heard his head crack against it.

"Oh my god!"

I watched and blood poured from the crack on his head. Rain went down and cradled him against himself. I felt a twinge of jealousy, but I had no right anymore. Cass screamed for the nurse.

Lisa, Heath, and everyone else had run off. Not wanting to get in trouble I assume. I felt so numb as I looked at the scene I had created. I took a few shaky steps towards Jack, Cass shot up and shoved me back.

"Stay away! Just go!"

She continued to scream but I tuned her out to just stare at Jack. I knew Cass was crying by the time she stopped screaming at me. I felt tears of my own start up as I backed away and shot down the hall and out the door.

The next day I came in and saw the principal talking to Rian and Cass. I deserved this, I deserve to be suspended and taken off the team. I didn't deserve anything good anymore after what I did yesterday.

He looked at me as I walked up and... smiled?

"Hello Alex. You ready for the game that's coming up?"

"Uh... Yes sir."

"Good, can't wait to see it. Have a good day you three!"

He gave us all a smile before turning and walking away. I looked at Rian and Cass in shock. Cass glared at me while Rian gave me a sympathetic look.

"You didn't do it did you? It wasn't your idea right?"

It was Cass who spoke up, hatred pouring from every word. I didn't respond, just looked down at the floor.

"We told him it was Heath who did it. Left Lisa out of it for you to handle."

My head shot up to give Rian a shocked look. I took a deep breath and shook my head.

"No... It wasn't my idea. You are right, but it's still my fault for doing it."

"Damn right! You-"

"Cass..."

She took and deep breath in and out before turning her glare to the floor. I actually felt bad for it.

"Look, We aren't going to say another word to you. Just know that we're beyond pissed at you for what you did to Jack."

Jack!

"How is he? Is he okay? What happ-"

Cass held her hand up to stop me.

"We aren't telling you anything Alex. If you honestly care you'll find out for yourself."

I opened and closed my mouth, sigh then nodded. The bell rang and we all went our separate ways.

~Present Time~

I sighed to myself as I thought of what had happened. I went through the rest of the classes in a blur until lunch came around. I shot out behind the gym to see Jack there, just like he promised. He looked up at me with a weary expression, making the guilt come back quickly. I took a deep breath before walking over to him.

Well, here goes nothing. Please don't keep hating me Jack.
