Memories That Fade Like Photographs

Miles Away

It’s been a little over five years since Alex left. I just turned twenty-three about a week ago. I lost contact with him not long after he moved. I knew it was going to happen, I just hoped it wasn’t going it be that fast. I was depressed for the first two years, Rian and Zack tried to help me, but after graduation Zack went off to collage. Leaving just me and Rian. A couple years back Rian got his own place and so did I. We visit each other often, I think he does it mostly to make sure I’m alright. I’m okay, I miss him, but I’m not going to let it take over my life. He is gone, I understand this now, and I have no other option but to accept it and move on with my life.

The chime on the door woke me from my thoughts and back to reality. I was working at a music store, which was pretty cool. We were lucky to get two or three customers a day so I basically had this place to myself. I would walk around, looking at all the CD’s and band posters that we had. Sometimes I would even bring my acoustic and play some while people walked in and out. It was nice and peaceful and, believe it or not, paid pretty well. I looked up from the book I had been reading to see two girls, one blonde and one red head, walking around the store. Whenever I would glance down I would hear them giggling. They looked like they were still in high school, Juniors maybe? I sighed and got up, walking towards them.

“Do you need helping finding something?” I asked with my best fake voice I could muster.

“Yes, I seem to have lost something.” The blonde said to me. Oh great, now I have to help her search for it.

“What did it look like maybe I can-”

“Oh no, it’s something I don’t have yet, but would like.” She batted her obviously fake eyelashes while her friend giggled again. Oh shit….

“What may that me Miss?” I asked, trying to be oblivious at this point.

“You number?” She winked and I almost wanted to laugh.

“I’m sorry Miss. First, you’re seventeen, am I correct? Well, I am twenty-three. Secondly, I’m gay. If you aren't here to buy anything than please leave.” With that I turned, walked back behind the desk, and started reading my book. Leaving them with shocked looks on their faces. The blonde left with the red head, mumbling an apology as the red head laughed her ass off at her friends embarrassment. I sighed again, shaking my head before continuing.

No less than five minutes after those two left, the door chime went off again. I wanted to groan yet I knew I had to work. It’s not that bad. Just a couple more hours then it’s back to the apartment. I looked up and saw a man looking at the Blink-182 CD’s. Hot and a good taste in music. I moved a bit, not wanting to make him look up, and grabbed my guitar. I began to strum Blink-182, First Date. I closed my eyes and got lost in it. That’s when I heard it, that voice sounded so familiar.

“Blink-182, First Date. Nice song man, you’re pretty good.” I looked first at the two CD’s he had placed on the counter, then up at him. Our eyes met and I swear I've seen him somewhere.

“H-Have we met before?” I asked, blushing a bit because I realized I was staring.

“If that’s a pick up line then sorry, it’s already been used.” He chuckled a bit and it sounded like music to me, making my stomach flutter with butterflies. I had to have met him before.

“N-No, I’m being serious.” I looked back into his eyes and they squinted a bit in confusion.

“You know. In all honesty, I feel like I’ve met you somewhere before too.” He had a small English accent which made him even hotter to me. Maybe that’s why my stomach was doing flips?

“O-Oh! Sorry, let me ring you up.” I quickly reached for the CD’s at the same time he went to hand them to me and our hands brushed. It felt like flame had just shot up my arm, but in the best way, leaving a trail of goose bumps in their wake. As I checked him out he continued to stare at me. I bagged them and handed them to him with a small smile, to which he returned. Before we could say anything else my boos came out of the back room.

“Jack, we need your help back here.” I nodded and got up.

“W-Wait, Jack?” I heard him say but my boss was already pulling me into the room.

I looked back and saw shock and, what was that, happiness, in his eyes? I was confused, but let my manager pull me away. I probably would never see him again, so why worry about it.

Don’t get attached Jack, you’ll only end up getting hurt again.
