*Jack's POV*

I pulled away from the short girl I had been crying on. Great, I thought. Suck it up you idiot. I gave the girl an awkward pat on the shoulder.

"Thanks, uh.."

"Anna," the short brunette finished.

"Yeah, thanks for helping, Anna. I owe you one," I gave her a watery smile. I could tell Alex was getting fidgety. Given all that's happened, however, I don't blame him. Before I turned to check with the office if Alex and I could be excused to go to the hospital, I turned back to her. I kissed the top of her head.

"Thanks again, fresh meat," I said with a smile. She laughed and motioned for me to get going. Then she turned to go back to her PE class. I looked at Alex and he was anxiously sidestepping towards to office.

"Come on," I said, remembering the dire situation. With that, Alex and I sprinted towards the office.

"WHAT?!" I shouted.

"Mr. Barakat," the receptionist sighed. "We can't let you leave school. You're not family."

"I'm practically family! I'm her boyfriend!" I shouted.

"Tough luck," the receptionist said, looking back at the papers on her desk and snapping her gum. It took all my strength not to launch myself at her and strangle her with her own gum. I just walked away in a fury to my next period. Only a couple more hours, Jack. I thought to myself. Then you can see her.

This was going to be a long few hours.

Alex and I were now in sixth period, both of us bouncing our knees anxiously. Emma had been in the hospital for hours now. I was a terrible boyfriend for not seeing her.

"Jack, it's not your fault you can't go see her," Alex said, reading my mind. "It's the stupid school's." He gave me a confident smile. "Anyways, I'm sure she's fine. Emma's tough." He's right, of course. Emma would be fine. But I still needed to see her ASAP. I began tapping my pencil on my desk in addition to bouncing my knee.

"But what if she's not?" I asked irrationally. "What if they messed up? What if she goes into a coma again? She looked in pretty bad shape, Alex, what if-" I was cut off by our Algebra Two teacher.

"Something you would like to share with the class, Barakat? Gaskarth?" he asked. I stood up. I had had it. I needed to get this off of my chest.

"Yes, actually." The class turned to me, astonished. Alex and I usually kept to ourselves. Alex had his head down, examining the desk. I scoffed at him and looked at the teacher. "My girlfriend is in the fucking hospital right now, in critical condition, and has been for hours, and I can't see her because I have to be in this stupid. Fucking. School!" I was shouting at this point. The teacher, surprisingly, didn't looked shocked at all.

"Mr. Barakat, Mr. Gaskarth, you may be excused," the teacher said, turning back to the board.

"W-What?" Alex and I both said, astonished.

"Well, Barakat, as you just stated, your girlfriend is in the, quote, 'fucking hospital right now', and I assume she would want to see her boyfriend. Alex can go to make sure you don't drive recklessly. Now go."

Alex and I shared an incredulous look, then grabbed our stuff and scrambled out of the classroom, everyone else staring at us in shock.
