Chapter Fifteen
*Alex's POV*
-3 months, 20 days and 8 hours since Emma went into coma-
That's it. Jack promised more than a week ago that he'd go outside, and he still hasn't left that hospital room. He has been glued to that stupid chair just like he has been for almost four months.
I walked across to my best friend, and grabbed him by the collar of his shirt and began pulling him out of that room.
"Al-Alex, what about, what about Emma? What are y-you doing? Alex, WHAT THE FUCK!" He yelled, yanking himself out of my grip. In less than a second, I reached over and grabbed him by the wrist this time.
"We're going outside, Jack."
*Jack's POV*
I didn't resist this time as Alex dragged me by my wrist out of that room and through the halls. I didn't say a word as he informed an inquiring receptionist as to where we were going. I stayed silent as she looked over to me and nodded in agreement. Then we got outside.
"FUCK!" I yelled, startling some passerby, but I didn't care. I wrenched myself from Alex's grasp once again and threw my arms over my eyes, leaning again a nearby wall. My eyes were burning. I haven't been outside for nearly four months, give me a break.
It took me a good fifteen minutes to get used to the sun, then Alex helped guide me across the street to a park. We plopped down on a bench, and let my eyes fully adjust.
When they did, it was like I was seeing the world for the first time.
I heard the shuffle of people's feet as they rushed off to unknown destinations. The faint tweet of birds, the laughter of playing children. My eyes drank up the green of the grass, the blue of the sky, and the assorted colors of the flowers and people's clothes. I curled my hands around the edge of the bench, feeling the rough wood underneath my fingers. Suddenly, there was an arm placed lightly across my shoulders. I looked over to Alex.
"Let's get you a shower because honestly dude, you reek."
I laughed. I haven't laughed in months! I continued to laugh, doubled over, feeling it roll through my body. I fell into Alex, still laughing. I laughed until my stomach hurt and my legs were weak. I looked up Alex, who was looking at me, amusement written all over his face.
"Way to ruin the moment, Lex."

-one week later-
It had become a regular thing for Alex and I to go to that park, sit in our bench, and just talk, for about twenty minutes a day. Sometimes we wouldn't talk. Sometimes we just sat there, enjoying the summer. School had started the day after I first stepped outside, but I refused to go until Emma woke up, and Alex stayed with me.
She was going to wake up.
Today was like any other day. Alex and I sat there and were talking about Blink when I saw a nurse run out of the hospital building. I didn't think twice about it, it happened all the time.
Then she made eye contact with me, and began rushing towards our bench. I tapped Alex and pointed out the nurse, who was approaching us, fast. We both half-rose from our seats when she got to us.
"Mr. Barakat," she panted. "It's Ms. Thompson, she–"
I didn't give her a chance to finish before I sprinted across the street, dodging cars, to the hospital.
