The First Time

Tragic Backgrounds

Emma’s POV

The short hand pointed to the number 12. It’s finally Saturday, the best day of the week.I can finally get some rest, dance around, not do my homework, and just enjoy some family time with Kate and Joe. For some reason I’m happy tonight. I think it’s mostly because I have a feeling that it will be a good night.

I just finished brushing my teeth and nothing good is on TV tonight. I decided to sleep. Ahh, nice warm bed, soft soft pillow.

I almost dozed off when I heard something disturbing. What the fuck was that? Thuck Thuck. There it is again. Ughh.

I was getting really annoyed, so I looked out the window. When I look down, the only person I couldn’t stop thinking was throwing pebbles to my window. He was whistling and when I looked at him, he smiled. He gave the cutest smile. My tummy felt like it’s full of birds and butterflies.

“Geez, Zack! It’s 12 pm. What are you doing here?”

“Looking for you. I thought I should be romantic.”

Romantic? Did he really say that? Jesus Christ, this guy really knows how to make my tummy turn. Oh look, a seagull went inside my tummy! (it’s an expression)

“Well, it’s really romantic, what are you doing?” I said.

“I wanted to ask you if you’d like to go out with me. Right here, right now.”

“Seriously? It’s midnight Zack. Where are we gonna go?”

“I didn’t think about that. I just want tonight to be spontaneous. Let’s think about it on the way. Come on Em, let’s go. Take your leap of faith.”

He gave me that cute smile again. I smiled back.

“Okay, I’ll go.” I was planning to go down, but then I realized I was wearing my breakfast printed pajamas. It had bacon and eggs printed on it. I thought I should change to something more appropriate.

“Hold on for a minute, okay?”

“Okay.”

I went to my wardrobe, change my pajamas to a white v-neck t-shirt and jeans. I put on my brown high boots and took my cardigan.

“Okay, I’m ready. Are you?” I asked

“Yeah.”

I started to climb my window. I was ready to jump.

“W-wait, what are you doing?”

“I’m going to jump. Catch.”

I closed my window and Zack looked really nervous. I jumped and luckily, he caught me. We were a bit unstable and we almost fell, but he managed to get by. I really didn’t expect that to happen. I didn’t know what I was thinking.

“Nice one.” I said while giving him a grin

“You’re lucky. Didn’t see that coming.”

“Yeah, I didn’t know what was on my mind, but at least, it’s faster than going down the stairs.”

“True. Shall we go?”

“We shall.”

We started walking. I kept on looking at Zack. He was wearing a white v-neck t-shirt just like mine, a jacket, jeans, and some really cool shoes. He looked incredibly good.

“Where are we gonna go?” I asked Zack

“Uhm, where do you wanna go?” He said while looking down at me.

“Uh, do you know coffee shops that are still open?”

“I do actually, they also sell hot chocolate. Do you like those?”

“Even better than coffee.” I smiled, he smiled, and I was melting. Not because he’s hot, it’s just that, he’s sweet.

We walked to that coffee shop, bought two cups of hot chocolate to go and went back to the road.

“Uhm.” Zack hummed while taking his first sip. “You like it?”

“I do. Tastes better than those they sell at Amy’s (Amy’s a diner).

He chuckled a bit.

“She sells the worst omelets.”

“I know right? Even Joe can cook better.”

“You know, I actually did this to get to know you better.” He stopped walking and looked at me. “So, I was expecting you could tell me more of yourself. Do you feel comfortable though? No pressure.”

“Uhm, I do feel comfortable. With you at least.” I said trying to open up a bit. I just really wanted him to know how I felt.

“Great, so tell me more about yourself.” We started to walk again.

“I-I like movies, pizza, food, and everything else I’m good at doing. That includes sleeping and giving hugs.” He looked at me. Knowing how pathetic I am, he probably just lost all his interest on being my friend or everything he attempted to do. “I’m not a very smart stud-“

“Stop right there. You’re not smart? Are you kidding me? Come one, you got straight A-s in Biology! Biology is not easy. You’re beyond smart, Em.”

“You really think so? Besides, we’re only learning about the human body and if I’m beyond smart you’re out of this world. Literally”

“What makes you say that?”

“You’ll find out, maybe tonight if you win my trust.”

He stopped walking, but I kept on walking. He stood there for a while and when I look back at him, I said,

“Are you coming?”

“Yeah, hold up.”

He did the cutest jog and caught up with me.

“You know, I like this Emma. Brave Emma. Brave Emma is different.” Zack said while looking at me.

“Thanks Zack. Sometimes it’s really hard to be brave.”

“Aww, why? Is it connected with your background?”

“It is actually. It’s really hard for me to trust people.”

“Em, what happened? Sooner or later you’re gonna have to trust me. I promised I’d be there for you right? Well I am now.”

I went silent. My heart started trembling. He’s being really nice to me. My feelings for him are growing bigger by the second. My head is telling me to shut up, but my instincts are telling me that I finally have someone worth trusting.

“Tragic backgrounds. Let’s start with that.” Zack suggested.

I sip my hot chocolate and started to man up.

“Uhm, I have two tragic backgrounds. I just hope you’re ready.”

“I am. Hit me.”

“The reason why I have trust issues is because of my traumatizing childhood. I had this neighbor in my old neighborhood. She was really nice. She trusted everybody. When I was 6, I was going to bed and my room was across her room. My window was opened and so was hers. I saw her hung herself, Zack. She killed herself. I was the only witness. I screamed and my parents came in. They called the police, but when the police arrived, it was too late. She was dead. We had a court and I was brought up to the podium. They asked me what happened and I told them what I saw. Never knew why she did that, but my parents and siblings told me she trusted the wrong person. The person she trusted, robbed her, took all her savings and she was broke. Since then, I never wanted to trust anyone other than my family… But you came along, and I don’t know.”

“Do you trust me?”

“I do." There was a pause. “Right, the second story. Uhm, Kate, Joe, and I don’t live with my parents anymore because they died. Their plane crashed when they were on a trip to Hawaii and they were never found. Kate got custody because she was 21 at that time and Joe and I, we were happy we got to stay with each other. I was 15 and Joe was 18. The judges thought Kate was old enough to take care of us and well, we weren’t children anymore so, we got to stay together.”

“I’m so sorry. I never thought you had such a terrible background. I truly am sorry for your lost and the tragedies you’ve been through.” He looked at me and gave me a hug. It was wonderful. The best hug ever. Even better than Joe and Kate’s hugs.

“Uhm, it’s okay you know. That was two and half years ago. We all turned okay. Joe got into college, Kate got a job, and I’m fine.”We paused for a while. “Well moving on from sadness, let’s talk about the happy things.” I continued

“Okay then, moving on.”
