Unmasked (Jack)
Jack
It was 12.07 when Jack closed the door. He had fallen on his way home and knocked over a neighbour’s pot plant. It had taken some time to fill everything back in and put it back in place.
Jack was scared Matt would not be content with the time he returned at so he moved around only very carefully. He got out of his Converse and snuck into the kitchen. And Matt was there.
“Hello Jack,” Matt said sweetly, a cute smile on his face. Jack froze; he was confused whether this was real or just an act.
“Hi Matt…” he replied.
“Did you have a nice time?” Matt asked. And before Jack could answer, he added, “Did you meet other fucking men? Huh? You little slut, you’re fucking late!” he shouted. He got up and went for Jack, knocking over a glass. Jack didn’t see it shatter on the ground, he was trying to run. But Matt was faster and he threw Jack’s slender frame to the ground. He threw himself on top of Jack and held him down. Jack tried to escape but Matt straddled him.
“I didn’t do anything!” Jack cried out desperately. But Matt didn’t listen. He punched him in various places and pulled his hair. He spat into Jack’s face. When he finally let go of the younger boy, the latter was crying. The tears mixed with spit and blood from a small cut on his cheek where Matt had punched him. Matt stormed out of the house and Jack could hear the front door slam.
He curled up in a foetal position and cried. But soon, he forced himself to get up. He needed to clean his wounds and tidy the kitchen. As he put a small band aid over the wound on his cheek, the picture of Alex smiling came into his mind. He looked so nice and as if he would never hurt anyone.
But Matt had looked like that too, he reminded himself. Matt had been the sweetest boyfriend in the beginning, bringing him flowers, caring for him and being very loving in general. But over time, he seemed to have uncovered a second face; a mask that he had been hiding behind had been taken off. He turned out to be brutal, mentally as well as physically abusing Jack. At first, he had only controlled his every move, wanting to know where he went and who he met. Then, it had progressed into some slaps when he hadn’t been happy with something. The first time Matt had hit Jack it had seemed so unreal; Jack had cried afterwards and Matt had seemed to be shocked as well. But this shock subsided, leaving only the Matt he knew now. The one who drank a lot, who was never happy with anything Jack did.
But still, Jack loved him. It may seem like he was stupid, but he just loved Matt. He was addicted to him. And from the outside, they looked like the perfect couple. Matt protecting Jack, the cute foolish boy. Sadly, it wasn’t really like that…
Alex probably wasn’t like that though. Actually, Jack was pretty sure but he was just careful with people nowadays.
Jack cleaned up the broken glass before preparing some lasagne for Matt later. He himself didn’t feel like eating. He put on some comfy clothing and decided to watch some TV while simultaneously reading through some things for work. He worked in a local office, only a few blocks away.
He was looking forward to going to church today. He perked up at the thought of it, church was one of the few places he was allowed to go to without Matt questioning him. He felt safe at church and now, this new priest was there. He was so nice and Jack secretly wanted to get to know him better. But he didn’t know how.
