Responsible
Last Service
Alex inhaled deeply. Then he stepped outside. Within seconds, all the talking in the church was gone, everyone was staring at him. He was nervous. He stepped to the podium and adjusted the microphone. He let his eyes wander the audience and caught an encouraging smile from Jack. He began to speak.
“Dear community, you all probably know that this is the last service I’ll be holding here. I would rather not have to go, but it is time to leave. I am deeply hurt and saddened by the fact that some people cannot seem to accept the fact that even a priest can fall in love. What makes me feel even worse, is the fact, that most of you are against homosexuality, probably because our church preaches it. But that is, in fact, wrong. Never in the bible does a text occur that would be against homosexuality.
But the worst of all is perhaps the incident that occurred about 2 weeks ago, in which I was poisoned by a passer-by. I am scared about someone feeling the need to hurt me this way, to endanger my life, just because they think what I do is wrong. Let me tell you something, homosexuality is not a sin according to the bible, but do you know what is?” Alex made a small pause, letting his gaze wander the people.
“Murder is,” he answered. He looked for reactions in the crowd, an elderly lady was dabbing at her eyes with a handkerchief. Everyone was as pale as a ghost. But apart from that, pokerfaces.
“I’ll be doing confessions tomorrow, in case someone wants to come… And I won’t tell the police.”
With that, he gave sign to the organ player and a song began to play. He started to sing and the community sang with him.
The rest of the service went without anything extraordinary. He was pretty relieved when it was over. He was well on the way to finding closure, having already moved out to Jack, his last service done, his laicization almost done, his website in the planning. He was going to do this.
