Jack

Jack entered the kitchen only seconds after Alex had blacked out. He noticed the older boy in the chair, not showing any sign of consciousness. Fear rushed through him; what was it with Alex?

He hurried to him, knelt down and cupped his face in his hands.

“Alex? Can you hear me?” Nothing. “Alex? This is Jack. Hey.” He pinched his cheek lightly. “Alex. Please come back.” Finally, Alex opened his eyes slightly.

“Hey. It’s Jack. You are safe.”

“Jack? I… what happened?” Alex replied weakly.

“You seem to have blacked out,” Jack explained softly.

“Oh yeah…” Alex said as he remembered. He frowned.

“What happened?” Jack asked.

“I… I got a call from the bishop and I should come in tomorrow to talk about my relationship to you,” Alex pressed out. Tears started to fill his eyes and he began to breathe weirdly again.

“Alex, it’ll all be okay. Remember, you can always tell them you only let me sleep here because I need a place to sleep in for now. Breathe with me. In,” Jack sucked in some air, “ –and out,” he breathed out. He kept breathing at a steady rhythm and after a while, Alex begun to do it too.

“I… Thanks so much, Jack. I’m just so scared of losing my job… and losing you,” Alex whispered.

“Shh. Let’s go to bed, cuddle and have tea?”

“I’m not supposed to…”

“Yes you are. This is a crisis situation and you need cuddles,” Jack replied sternly, but the crinkles around his eyes told Alex he was joking.

“I guess I have no other option then…”

“Correct.”

Jack helped Alex get up and they made their way over to the bedroom. Jack tucked Alex in and wrapped him in his arms. Alex snuggled close to Jack and enjoyed the warmth he was radiating.

“Thank you so much for being there for me,” Alex mumbled.

“Thank you so much for being there,” Jack gave back, squeezing Alex just a bit more, a smile appearing on his face.
