Responsible
Rescued (Alex)
Alex pulled up in front of Jack’s house only a few minutes later. Jack was standing outside, a bag next to him. When he spotted Alex, he picked up his bag and started limping towards the older boy. Alex ran up to him and took the bag from him before offering him an arm to use as support. Jack was still having trouble breathing. Alex couldn’t see exactly what injuries he had because it was dark; he’d have to check that at home.
Jack got in the car without a sound and they drove off. At Alex’s place, they got out of the car and Alex helped Jack to the house. He carried his bag inside too and had Jack sit down at the table. He went back to lock the door, he didn’t want to risk Matt or anyone else coming in.
“Jack, does Matt know where you are?” Alex asked firmly.
“No, I just wrote a note that I was staying with a friend. I shut off my phone and removed the battery too so he can’t locate me,” Jack replied.
“Okay, good. I locked the door, you are safe here.”
“Thanks so much,” Jack said quietly.
“Can I just take a quick look at you to see if there are any injuries that should be treated at the hospital?” Alex asked worriedly.
“Y-yeah, I guess,” Jack replied.
Alex started by taking a look at his face. He had a small cut on his cheek. The rest of his head seemed to be okay. His arms were okay if you didn’t count the many bruises. But his chest… something was wrong there. Jack had trouble breathing in and out but when Alex tried touching his chest and his ribcage to see if any rib was damaged, he couldn’t feel anything. Jack’s legs were hurt too; his left ankle was sprained but not too badly.
“Jack, what happened to your ribs?” Alex asked, squatting down in front of Jack.
“I… I… Matt…” Jack’s eyes started getting watery and he got even paler.
“Shh, you don’t have to tell me. It’ll all be okay. We should maybe go to the hospital to get it checked,” Alex said softly, taking Jack in his arms.
“No! I can’t go there,” Jack said, panicking.
“Jack…”
“No!”
“Okay, but if it gets worse, we go,” Alex said.
“I- Maybe.”
“Ja-ack.”
“Yes, okay…”
“Good. As for sleeping tonight… I don’t have a guest room so you can sleep in my bed and I’ll be on the couch.”
“No.”
“Why not?” Alex sighed.
Jack took a long time to reply. He was looking down, avoiding Alex’s gaze. Alex looked at him and made a little “hm” after a while.
“I’d… prefer not sleeping alone tonight,” Jack finally said. He kept looking down, not daring to look Alex in the eyes. He blushed slightly.
“Uh, sure,” Alex replied, rubbing his neck. He was surprised but he didn’t think it was bad. He would be able to keep a close eye on Jack.
“I mean only if it’s really, really okay with you,” Jack added hastily
.
“It is, don’t worry,” Alex said with a smile.
“Thank you so much,” Jack whispered, looking up again.
“Get ready for bed then,” Alex commanded softly. Jack nodded eagerly and slowly got up. Alex would prepare the bed for an additional person in the meantime.
