Worse Than Nicotine

Making Things Right

It was Friday when Holly went back to school. The school was buzzing with the news of Alex’s departure from the school, and all it did was make Holly sick to her stomach. Her classmates had come up with two solutions to his leaving. One: (the conclusion stupid Jasey Rae had come up with) Alex had an affair with one of his students. Two: the janitor had found Alex’s marijuana stash in the back of his instrument closet and reported it to the school board. The fact that most were believing the second option surprisingly didn’t make her feel any better.

Since accepting Alex’s offer, Holly had been deciding how she’d tell her parents and Hayley she was leaving. She knew she couldn’t just leave without a trace (in fear they would report her case to the police); she needed to at least explain and tell them. The only problem was: she was afraid. With all the pride she had, Holly didn’t have the balls to tell them her explanation to their faces. She was afraid of their judgment. The only solution was to write them both a letter, and hopefully they wouldn’t come after her.

She excused herself from her last class of the day and walked across the hallway where she knew Hayley’s locker was. Once there, she pulled out the crumpled letter from her pocket and kissed it for good luck before slipping it through the cracks of the metal locker. But that wasn’t all she had to do today. She needed to physically talk with one last person before she left.

Holly already knew which office to go to once she passed the principal’s office. She approached the desired door with the plaque that said, Mrs. Urie, in bold white letters. She knocked softly and after a minute, she answered the door with a smile. “Holly!” She instantly brought the girl in a hug. “How are you, sweetie?”

The blonde leaned back, trying to wipe an imaginary tear from her eye. “Actually, I’m not doing so good, Grace.” She frowned at the ground. “May I come in?”

Mrs. Urie nodded solemnly and gestured for her to take a seat in front of her desk. She slowly closed her office door and sat down, moving the large stack of papers to the side so she could see Holly. “What do you need―”

“Grace, I know that you know.” Holly’s mood had suddenly changed. She went quickly from a sad teenager to a girl who meant business. Being her ex’s mother and on the school board, Mrs. Urie was the only one Holly could turn to possibly get Alex out of the clear, and she was going to take that right in her hands.

Mrs. Urie furrowed her brow. “I don’t―”

“I came to talk to you about Dulaney’s former music teacher, Mr. Gaskarth. Surely, Brendon has brought him up to you.” She crossed one leg over the other.

The mother cleared her throat and carefully reached her hand out, locking the door to her office so no one could interrupt their conversation. She then leaned in to the student while lacing her hands together. “Holly, I know you’re upset about what happened to your …” She trailed off, knowing the exact word for what Alex meant to Holly but dared not to say it. “But it’s for the best. You’re lucky Brendon told me to end it now before you got way too deep. He was only doing it because he cared about you.”

Yeah fucking right
, Holly thought in her head.

“Grace, since we’re friends, I wanted to let you in on the truth.” She tried to keep her voice steady as Mrs. Urie’s brow perked up at that. “Your son was lying. There was nothing going between me and Mr. Gaskarth. It was a stupid rumor.”

The parent sat back in her seat, thinking. “Why would he lie? I know how much he cares for you, Holly.”

She wanted to roll her eyes. “He’s been upset with me since we broke up. He needed someone to blame for why I ended it, so he blamed Mr. Gaskarth because he knew how much I liked music class.” She watched as Mrs. Urie stared at her longingly, recounting her words in her head. Holly batted her eyelashes a couple times and tried to maintain her innocent look. “Please, believe me, Grace. Everything I said is true.”

“There’s just one thing I don’t understand.” The mother leaned against her desk again, looking Holly straight in the eyes. “Why would you want to save your music teacher’s reputation so bad and go against the boy you’ve known since birth?”

Holly kept their stare locked. “I just want things right.”

Mrs. Urie glanced at her for another moment before sighing and sitting up straighter in her chair. “Okay,” she breathed out, “I believe you.” Just as Holly was about to thank her, she cut in with a clasp of her hands. “But I need the school to be safe and the last thing we need is a scandal like this rocking our school, so Mr. Gaskarth will not be returning to Dulaney. We won’t call the authorities on him though, because we don’t have real evidence besides my son’s claim anyways.”

“Thank you, Grace.” Holly smiled as she stood from her seat.

Mrs. Urie hugged her tightly and opened the door for her. “Come to me again if you need anything. Sorry for the mix-up.”

She nodded and thanked her again before walking out of the office. Her deeds were done, and now all she needed to do was wait for tomorrow.

Notes

1 chapter left!
Thank you for all the responses on the last chapter, and you all seemed really mad at Brendon like whoooooaaaa :o I never expected an OC fic to take off like this. Usually Jalex Student/Teacher fics get really popular on this site (and they should, because it's Jalex obviously<3) but it was just such a surprise to me that a Student/Teacher fic involving an OC could get recognition like this! You guys are absolutely awesome<3
I also may or may not have a surprise up my sleeve after the final chapter comes out ;) Stay tuned!

@gamble with desire.
AWWWW! That was one of the sweetest comment ever! Thank you so much <3 That really meant a lot to me, especially regarding the sex scene. I was afraid it'd be too awkward, but I was surprised at the good responses I got! Thanks again <3 :)

Okay so I'm really late on this, but I totally stopped reading fics for a while. But I still love this story so so much and I really liked your sex scene! I suck at sex scenes (no pun intended!) but yours was so detailed (but not grossly so) and really well paced and idek how to describe this but you got across really well that she was a virgin and how a virgin might feel if they were in this situation like you weren't all "yup this is sex I'm totally used to it even though I've never done it lol" without it being over-the-top if you catch my drift??

Anyway I'm done fangirling and I love the sequel a lot and you should update really soon!!!
