The Rock Show

Long Live Us

5 Months Later

It was the January after Warped Tour. In the past months, more things happened than just last year. Alex and Victoria now shared an apartment in California. Victoria moved from her hometown apartment―the apartment of uncherished memories―to be closer with Alex, even though it scared her. She wasn’t used to seeing him all the time, and even though sometimes she wanted to go back to her hometown place, she was always lonely when he went to the studio.

To combat her loneliness and distract her from things, Victoria took up the job as a part-time wedding photographer. She was still working for the band and even went to the studio sometimes, but she liked helping to make a couple’s wedding special. It was an odd job to take for her, seeing as the planning of weddings and the future scared the living shit out of her. But she liked this new job a lot, and never knew it would spark a new idea in Alex.

---

The vocalist walked out of the jewelry shop, waving goodbye to the owner on his way out. He slipped the red velvet box in his jacket’s pocket as he smiled to himself. He was really going to do this. After months of saving up and borrowing money from the guys, he was going to ask the question that had been haunting him for a year.

He arrived at the house and sat down, recounting what he was going to do. Shit, he thought, I don’t even have a plan …

He heard the lock on the door turn and open moments later, and suddenly, he palms started to sweat.

“You can do this man.”
Jack had said this morning. “It’s Vic. She’ll be happy even if you proposed to her with a Ring Pop. Actually, she might like that better, knowing her.”

“Jesus fucking Christ,” he heard her mutter to herself as the clicking of her heels sounded down the hall, “what a bride-zilla.”

He stood and walked over to her as she got into the room. He scared her by walking behind her back and pulling her close to him. “Hey, babe,” he smirked and kissed her cheek from behind. The box suddenly felt heavy in his pocket.

“You need to stop scaring me.” She chuckled softly as he continued to plant kisses on her cheek. “Okay, as much as I love you, Gaskarth, these heels are killing me. And you know that I hate wearing heels.”

“Duly noted,” he nodded and released her.

She groaned and hurriedly ran into their bedroom, kicking off her heels immediately. She slipped her dress off as she heard Alex call in the living room, “Hey, Vic?”

“Yeah?” She replied and threw on one of Alex’s random band tees.

“When you’re done, can you come back out here?”

She pulled on a pair of sweatpants. “Already missing me, Gaskarth?”

She heard him laugh. “You could say that.”

Pulling her hair into a ponytail, she checked herself in the mirror. Wedding makeup, oh how she hated it. She washed off the lipstick and blush staining her skin, but left the eyeliner and mascara on. When she was satisfied, she walked out of the room, mumbling, “Okay, what do you―”

In the middle of the living room, with the most worried look on his face, was Alex on one knee.

Victoria’s eyes widened. “Alex …”

“Victoria, we’ve known each other since high school. You pulled me out of my rut then and gave me the ride of my life.” He stared into her shocked hazel eyes. “You were my first love, and you still continue to be the love of my life. We’ve had many fallouts, but we’re stronger now than ever.

“I’ve been thinking about this since Warped, really.” He continued after a beat of silence. “It’s been this nagging thought at the back of my head since. I love you, and … I want to spend these years we have left with you.” He quickly pulled the velvet box from his pocket and opened it.

Victoria gulped, still in utter shock. “Alex,” she said as her hands shook, “you … you know how bad marriage scares me.”

His knee was killing him, and he didn’t care about the whole cliché way to propose anymore. He stood and grabbed her trembling hands. “It scares me too.” He pushed a few strands of hair away from her face. “But we’re getting older every passing day and I don’t want anything to get between us again.”

“Things can still happen, Alex―”

“Hamilton,” he smirked and loved the way she smiled at the old nickname, “just accept.”

“You’re so cliché.” She sighed and lifted her eyes to his. “But, yes, I accept.”

The grin never left his face as he slid the sparkling ring on her finger. He took note of the way she smiled at the sight of her birthstone, Sapphire, lining outside the big diamond. He knew that Victoria wasn’t one for expensive things, but if they involved Sapphire, she was in.

She admired the ring until Alex reached for her face and kissed her lips. She smiled into the kiss, loving the familiar feeling of his lips and noticing that she was going to be feeling this every day now. Holy shit, she thought, I’m getting married …

When he pulled away, he saw the apprehensive look on her face. “We’re not going to have one of those big weddings, are we?” She asked.

“I’ll make you a deal.” He said, grabbing her hands and kissing them. “We don’t have to have a big wedding, but you at least have to marry me in Vegas like I said back in high school.”

---

Alex tipped the bottle to his lips as they sat in his car. Victoria was driving them around town, since they were the most boring couple around and found enjoyment in watching their surroundings during their weekends off from school. She really shouldn’t have been driving, since she was tipsy herself. But who were they to care?

“Look at that lady,” she pointed to the woman across the street from them, standing out in her nightgown and watering her gnome. “That’s Mrs. Jenkins. She’s been watering that gnome since her husband died five years ago.”

“Why?” He giggled.

Victoria cocked her head to the side. “I don’t know. That’s a good question.” He noticed the way she started to stare longingly at the woman as she took another gulp of her Stella. “Maybe … it helps her still feel a connection to him. Apparently, he bought that gnome for her like two weeks before he died from ammonia.”

Alex studied her carefully, even through his hazy vision, as she laid her head outside the window of the car and continued. “I remember her husband. He was a nice guy; always gave me five bucks as a kid for mowing their lawn. They weren’t this cliché old couple like Mr. and Mrs. Ray. They were different and loved each other like they were still young, even getting married in Vegas rather than having a big wedding.” She laid back in the seat, tipping her bottle in the air as she said, “Long live Mr. Jenkins.” She then proceeded to take a long sip from her beer.

Alex took her hand then, lacing his long fingers with hers that contained bitten-down nails from stress. She looked at him, and they kind of just stared at each other like that for a while, soaking in each other’s expression. He finally broke the silence, “If I have the chance―that one special chance―I’d marry you in Vegas.”

She stayed quiet for a moment before punching his arm and looking back to Mrs. Jenkins outside the car. “You’re such a liar, Gaskarth.”

---

Victoria remembered that memory well. It was almost weird to think of it and remember their days in high school where Alex would promise her numerous things that she would deny. “Okay,” she agreed, pulling herself back to reality, “deal.”

Alex smiled big and kissed her lightly. “I can’t wait to call you my wife.” His eyes then lit up. “Think of Alex Jr.”

She raised a brow. “You’ve got to be kidding now.”

“What?”

“Alex, you know how horrible I am with children.” She stared at him seriously as he pouted out his lip. She then sighed. “But I guess I can make the sacrifice …”

He brought their lips together again, more roughly this time, to Victoria’s enjoyment. He bit down on her lip, causing her to smirk into the kiss. She could feel him moving their tangled bodies backwards and towards the bedroom. “What are you doing?” She chuckled as she leaned away for air.

“You’re willing to make the sacrifice?” He wiggled a caterpillar eyebrow at her.

“Sadly,” she rolled her eyes.

“Well, let’s start now.”

The End.
