The Way I Feel Will Remain the Same

Chapter inspiration: The End of All Things – Panic! At the Disco

“HEY, IT’S TIME TO GET UP! WE GOT SHIT TO DO!”

Vinny’s booming voice instantly startled Victoria from her sleep. She sat up, immediately hitting her head on the top bunk and falling back to the pillow. “Ow, fuck …” She muttered, rubbing her forehead. She looked over, noticing that she was clearly not in her own bunk while she glanced at the sleeping Alex next to her. She sighed, knowing about the long hangover he’d have today, and kissed his forehead before she stood from the bed.

She had forgotten when she got up during the night to change, which was her reason for walking out into the front lounge with only a large Ravens shirt on, possibly belonging to Alex since he liked football more than the band sometimes.

“Well, look who finally got up.” Rian snickered from behind his bowl of Frosted Flakes, watching as Victoria walked passed him and Zack and to the kitchenette.

“Haven’t seen you since late last night,” Zack added as the dark blonde opened the fridge for something to eat.

Victoria inspected the banana she pulled out. “Does this still look good to you?”

“Vic,” Rian called in a serious tone. “What the fuck happened last night?”

“Yeah, the last we saw of you was heading towards the buses when Alex was shitfaced and nowhere to be found. Not to mention that a few minutes after you left, Lisa came back the same way falling over her heels and crying.” Zack said, moving over as Victoria took a seat next to him on the couch.

Victoria shook her head and took a bite of the banana. “That bitch …” She muttered under her breath. “Well, long story short: Alex wanted me to meet him next to our bus to tell me something. I found him and Lisa going at it when I got there. I pushed her off of him and carried him back to the bus seeing as he was thoroughly intoxicated. I helped him while he puked his guts out and listened to him blabber, which consisted of him saying Lisa was forcing herself on him because he was drunk. And then I just helped him sleep. The End.”

She noticed the way Rian and Zack exchanged a look, and she furrowed her brow. “What? Do you guys know something else?” She questioned suspiciously. “Do you know what Alex was going to tell me?”

“Nope,” they chorused together.

“Well, speaking of horny boys,” Rian stood from his seat, “Jack said he’s waiting for you at the tent.”

Victoria hopped up and walked to throw her banana peel away. “Why?”

“Hell if I know,” Rian shrugged.

She shrugged and went to the bathroom to change, throwing on a random muscle tee she had in her bag and shorts with her favorite floral Vans. She shoved Alex’s foot when it was in her way as she walked out of the bathroom, hollering, “WAKE THE FUCK UP, GASKARTH! WAKEY, WAKEY!”

All she heard was groan in response as she skipped to the front lounge and then off the bus. Despite all the shit that happened the night before, she was kind of having a great morning. She just felt energized, even with the very slight hangover. She was definitely ready for today’s crowd.

She had sprinted all the way to the tents, chuckling at her speed. She stopped running and started walking when she approached ATL’s tent, tapping her skunk-haired friend on the shoulder with a smile. “Fancy seein’ you here, cowboy.” She giggled.

Jack only turned slowly, scratching the back of his head. “I can see you’re pretty well.”

She nodded and beamed. “So, what’d you need me here so quickly? Do we have all the merch out?” She was about to walk over to the boxes when he stopped her.

“No, it―” he was stumbling over what to say “―it doesn’t have to do with the merch, Vic.”

She lifted a brow. “Then what’s wrong?”

“Can we just …” He moved their bodies away from the tent, causing a few looks from helpers like Vinny and Danny to be given.

“What’s up, brotha-man?” She laughed, hitting both his arms a couple of times playfully.

“I―uh …” He wished he was better with things like this. He had this whole speech planned out, and he instantly forgot it. “I have to talk to you about something that’s been on my mind lately.”

She was suddenly concerned. “What’s wrong?”

He breathed out heavily, preparing himself and causing her impatience. “Alex told us about what he was planning to tell you last night, and now that everything is out in the open between you and him, I have something of my own to confess.”

“Jack, he didn’t―”

“I feel something for you, Victoria.” He finally said it, and his eyes traveled to hers, seeing the halted expression. “I don’t know what it is―I’m not used to feeling things like this―but it’s there. It’s been there for a while, and I’ve been too scared to really think about it to notice it. It’s like …” He grabbed for both her hands then. “Right now, all I can feel is that really sick feeling in my stomach. But in a good way.” He released her hands, surprised she hadn’t made any movements yet. “I just feel something. And it’s the strongest feeling I’ve ever felt in my life.”

After what seemed like hours, she finally looked down and swallowed the lump in her throat. “Well―um―that sure was … a mouthful.” She scratched the back of her head. “But, Jack … Alex didn’t tell me anything last night. At least not anything you think he said.”

“He didn’t―” He stopped himself, thinking over her words. “Is that all you have to say? After I literally just spilled my guts, you have nothing else?”

She finally stared at his dark orbs, anger suddenly pulsing through her veins. “No,” she spoke flatly, “ta―take it back.”

“Excuse me?” He lofted a brow.

“I said, ‘Take it back.’ Take back what you said.” She grew angrier with each passing second that he was quiet, clenching her fists. “TAKE IT BACK, JACK!”

He gulped at her fury. “I can’t.”

“TAKE IT BACK. NOW.”

“Victoria, I―”

“I need to get out of here.” She cut in, waving her hands around and walking away.

She couldn’t take any more of this. She didn’t understand what made her so likable. And right now, she hated Jack. She hated him for ruining something so good as their friendship with his stupid feelings.

Feelings …

Who the fuck needs them?
