Deer In The Headlights

Chapter Fifty-Two

*Jack's Nightmare*

"Hey, babe, I'm home!" Alex yelled up to Jack, closing the white door behind him. When there was no reply, Alex was suddenly confused. Jack always answers with 'Nice to know', giggling after.

"Jack?" Alex called, noticing Jack hadn't said anything back. Maybe he's just sleeping? I'll check on him when I've put these away, Alex thinks. He places the bag of shopping onto the side, immediately taking his coat of and hanging it on the back of the table chair. He then resumed to his shopping bags, picking out the cupboard, freezer and fridge stuff into one pile. He's always had a weird way of putting groceries away, but that's who he is. He heard his phone call and he groaned, walking over to his coat and quickly receiving his phone.

"Hello?" Alex sweetly said into the phone. There was silence, no sound on the other line.

"Um, are you there?" Alex asked, biting his lip with a frown. Silence. That's all that came through the other end. Alex rolled his eyes. Just another prank.

"Okay, I'm hanging up now!" Alex sang into the phone, clicking the red decline button. He sighed, placing the phone on the table and walked back to the kitchen counter. He happily continued putting his shopping away, starting from the cupboard. He placed the last cupboard food neatly in the cupboard, starting on the fridge stiff. As he went to open the fridge, his phone called again. He walked over to his phone for the second time, not bothering to check the caller ID.

"'Ello?" Alex smiled into the phone. There was no reply, but as he listened carefully, he could hear deep, heavy breathing.

"I'm just gonna hang-"

"You're gonna let me fall." A very deep, horse voice finally perked up through the other end.

"Excuse me?" Alex furrowed his eyebrows, finding the deep, scary voice quite intimidating. There was another silence, only this time, the breathing slowly started getting louder.

"Catch me. Catch me before my body is turned into black and buried six feet under. Catch me. Don't let me fall, Alex." It said, the hardness of its voice brimming through.

"Excuse me, who are you? Is this some kind of joke?" Alex asked, annoyed. He played with the thread of his coat, waiting upon an answer to call through his phone. It must of been a whole minute, the breathing getting louder rapidly, before there was an answer.

"Catch me, Alex. Find me. Stop me from falling into death." Death? What? What death? Who's death? Alex had so many questions, all to be un-questioned.

"I'm sorry, but who are you exactly?" Alex questioned the hallowed voice, his fingers starting to become sweaty.

"Alex, walk upstairs, he needs you." The voice became calmer, but the bitterness tone still there.

"Why?" Alex was confused. Why did he have to walk upstairs?

"He needs you, Alex. Save him before it's too late." The voice commanded, sounding quite annoyed.

"Who?" Alex asks, his fingers finally leaving the piece of thread and he he rubbed them against his jeans, trying to get rid of the sweat. Another moment of heavy breathing, but it didn't last too long

"Jack." It stated. Alex's heart jumped at his lover's name.

"What's wrong with him? Is he okay?" Alex asked, worried. What could be wrong with Jack?

"Don't let him fall. Dammit, how do I not know you're gonna gonna let me fall? On to the harsh ground?" Okay, and now he's not making any sense. Alex first thought was this guy is crazy.

"Save him before it's too late." Was the last words before the line went dead. Alex placed the phone on the table, his head turning to the stairs. He stared at them for a moment, debating on if he should listen to the random guy who called him.

"Jack?!" Alex called through the silenced house. He waited, waited for his reply. He was stood there for five minutes. No reply. "Okayyyy..." Alex eyed the stairs before decided that yeah, he should defiantly check on Jack. He hurried up the stairs, become quite fearful.

"Jack?" Alex smiled through his fear as he opened Jack's door quietly.

And what he saw wasn't nice.

"Jack, holy shit!" Alex screamed as he saw Jack laid out on top of the bed, his arm hanging off with rows and rows of bleeding cuts. Alex quickly ran downstairs, running over to his phone. His hands were shaking and sweating. He fondled with his phone, trying to unlock it.

It was off.

It would'nt turn on.

"Work, work, work,.please work!" Alex screamed at his phone. He didn't know what to do. Suddenly, a piece of paper caught his eye. That wasn't on the table when he left. Laying there, with big bold writing wrote in permanent marker said:

Save him yourself. No one else can.

Alex broke down into tears, clenching his fists.

"I hate you. I hate you so much!" Alex sobbed, turning to run upstairs, but was Jack's voice stopped him.

"Why do you hate me, Lex?" Jack's voice came behind Alex. Alex turned, expecting to see Jack's face, but there was nothing. Jack's voice was hanging in thin air. How is this possible? Alex thought he must of been hearing things. He ran back upstairs, dashing to Jack's room. He cried harder as he saw his lover, passed out, possibly dead, bleeding out. He ran over to Jack, picking him up.

"Don't let me fall." Jack's lips were moving.

"Jack!" Alex exclaimed. He's still alive.

"Jack, what do I do? What do I do?" Alex asked, sobbing, liquid falling from his eyes. He stared down at his loved one, looking at his beautiful face.

Alex soon looked away, running down stairs with Jack in his arms. He ran to the front door, opening it with difficulty. He ran straight to his car, feeling in his jeans pocket for his keys.

They weren't there

Alex didn't even try to find his keys, instead, he ran to cross the road to get to his best friend. As he was too using trying not to drop Jack, a lorry was zooming down the road. Alex couldn't even think twice before it hit them both, running them over, killing them.

*End of Nightmare*

"Jack, calm down, calm down. It was just a bad dream." I was shook to life by my mum. I opened my eyes quickly, finding it too blurry to see anything.

"It's okay, I'm here." My mum cooed, pulling me into a warm, cozy hug. I've never had a nightmare where I was Alex. I hope I never have one of them again. I held on to my mum tightly, scared but also feeling loved by my mum's presence.

"Do you wanna talk about it?" She asks, kissing my forehead. Should I? I've never talked about my nightmares to my mum before. Does she deserve to know? I don't know. Am I ready to tell her that they're still going on? Well, she already knows they are. I sighed, shaking my head no, not mentally prepared for letting it all out.

"It's okay. It's difficult, isn't it?" She asks, looking down at me with her green eyes. This is my mother. My mother that cares for me. The mum that doesn't shout at me or gets mad.

"It is." I admit. She just places her head on top of mine, comforting me until I fell back to sleep.
