Deer In The Headlights

Chapter Three

Alex's p.o.v~
"Jack! You're finally awake. Nice to see you, buddy," I smiled towards the innocent boy in the uncomfortable hospital bed. I gripped hold of my clipboard as I took in his features. He had an nose a little too big for his face, that had a little cut across the top. His hair was all flopped in front of his face. A blob of blonde on one side and black-y-brown on the other. From what I could see through the hair and purple bruises, he had piercing brown eyes.
"I'm just going to check if you're okay, and ask some questions. Is that okay?" I asked, walking across the room steadily to grab a chair. I felt his eyes on me as I picked the chair up, which made me sort of nervous. My hands became sweaty, I had no idea why. I moved slowly and by only thirty seconds of moving, I dropped the chair. Oh my god! I'm so stupid. I heard faint giggles coming from Jack. That was a strange, but good noise to my ears. Urg, why am I so stupid? I can't even pick a fucking chair up without dropping it. I starred as Jack gave me a 'sorry' look and I returned my head to focus on picking the chair up.
As I gripped hold of the chair, I moved quickly to the side of Jack.
"Sorry for that." I blushed from embarrassment. I looked at the clipboard, glancing at some of the questions and information before placing it on the clean coffee table beside me.
I smiled, but still obviously embarrassed. I saw Jack smile back to me but faded a couple of seconds later. I decided to let it slip by me. I lifted my head from starring at the bed frame to see Jack thinking hard on something. As creepy as it sounds, I watched him. The way his eyebrows knitted together and he looked tap his finger gently on the metal frame as he concentrated. It kind of fascinating- wait what? Urg, been a long day. Maybe I should ask him a question, as much as I hated to disturb him. I took a deep breath as I asked the first question.
"How're you feeling?" I questioned. I saw his face change to something I couldn't quite tell. Maybe it was a little too early to be asking questions? I mean, he has just woke up to find that he's in a hospital. He probably has no idea what's going on right now. I heard him take a deep breath.
"I-I'm not sure."He startled, going off in to his little world again. He looked all down his body before looking up straight to me and his eyes started to explore my features. Meanwhile, I was starring right into his eyes. Confusion was written all over his face, with a tint of fear. I could read it all now.
Shortly after, he sighed, releasing a question, "W-What happened to me? I mean, how did I end up here?" He asked with concern. That took me back a little. He doesn't even remember that he had got hit by a bus. This is going to be shocking to him and to be honest, it's going to be a little difficult telling him. I took a deep breath and answered his worried question.
"Well, I um, you kinda got hit by a bus." That shock in his eyes was enough to make me regret telling him. Maybe I shouldn't have told him, maybe I should've told him when he recovered a little bit more. Damn, I'm terrible at my job. I don't know why I'm still working here. He came back to reality as he snapped his glaze to me, biting his lip.
"H-How long was I out for?" He asked, finger still lightly tapping against the metal. I don't think he even notices. I went to grab my clipboard, because I actually had no idea how long he had been out for. I bit my lip as I saw the answers on the page.
"A couple of hours. Did you know you was dead for an minute?" I blurted out, not meaning to add the last bit. Damnnit, I should just give my job up. I'm so bad at it. The fact that I have to 'help' Jack, with my bad 'helping' skills for the rest of the month 'till he gets better. Don't get me wrong, I think Jack is pretty cool. I just can't do my job properly.
A couple of moments of sitting in a kind of awkward silence, it was gone by Jack's mum rushing through the door, tears scrolling down her cheeks. Here comes the love-y dove-y mother and son thing. I awkwardly sat there as they talked each other out.

Finally, Jack's mum pulled away from Jack, "I'll leave you with Doctor Gaskarth." I smiled at Jack's mum, then turned my glaze back to Jack. He looked like his favorite item has been taken off him, so helpless and sad. I was thinking of an question I could ask Jack, but nothing came up. I got frustrated, digging far into my helpless brain searching for a question to take its roll. Finally, a question popped up.
"So Jack, how are you feeling now?" I asked the most stupid question in the most stupid questions book. I bit my lip as he looked at me blankly.
"I'm better, I guess." He said, not much hope in his voice. I sank down a little in my chair and took a look at my clipboard. I searched for all the helpful questions and information. One question got to me, and decided it was important to ask it.
"Jack? How did this happen?" I asked, concerned. He looked at me. He looked like he was swimming through me. He blinked before answering.
"If I remember rightly, I had an argument with my mum which made me turn out all my anger and stomp out the house. I-I then got my phone out and put a song on. Green Day, Time Of Your Life, to be pacific. I then got to the end off an street and put on another song and I guess I wasn't paying attention and stepped on to a busy road where...where.." He stopped. Fear had now covered his face, smothering him to death. I saw a shining tear in the back off his eye. A tear that would cut and scar. He closed his eyes as he rolled his head away from me. That honestly broke my heart. This boy was so fragile and had no idea what happened when he woke up to find himself in hospital. Now he remembers, it's tearing him to pieces that he might not be able to pick back up. I knew this all from one look in to the eye that held all his secrets. That held all his fear back.
I sighed as I got up from the chair and moved it back to where it belonged. I looked over the Jack's face. His eyes were shut and I saw his red cheeks were covered in tears. But I couldn't do anything. I'm not aloud to get attached to patients. I decided to let it slip by me. I moved to the door before taking one more glance at Jack.
"Goodnight, Jack."
