Deer In The Headlights
Chapter Sixteen
Alex's p.o.v
"What made you leave, Gaskarth?" My boss questioned as he started filling in my paper to say I was leaving. I shifted uncomfortably in my chair, my breathing becoming uneven a little. I know what my boss is like when people decide to just quit and have no reason. But I did. I have a reason. That reason is Jack. He's been on my mind constantly, nearly making me put the wrong needle in someone; which would've turned out terrible if Susan didn't stop me. Also, I never liked this job much. But I know my boss will still be furious at me. I took a deep breathe and chuckled nervously.
"I um, I don't think this job, like, is working out for me." I gulped, not thinking that was a good enough reason to tell my strict boss. Well what did you expect me to say? 'I may or may not of fallen for one of our patients who I will never see again.'? I dont think so. My boss sneered, taking it as a joke. I bit my lip, getting slightly scared for what he's going to say. He slammed his pen down with a force and settled his brown eyes on mine. I starred in to them, pulling on my lip again. His tanned skin seemed to got redder. I replaced my eyes down to the paper he were writing on.
"So you're saying you hate this job? You're saying this hospital I run is not good enough?" He snapped, crunching his facial expressions up. I instantly shook my head no, not wanting him to get more mad.
"N-no, sir, I do like the hospital, but this job i-is not for me." I smiled nervously, my body shaking slightly.
"Well do you want to work as our bin collector? Seems like a good job for you. You'll suit it." He smirked. That's when I frowned. In what right did he have to say that? It's not my fault that it just simply isn't working.
"Haha, nice offer, but no." I glared at my boss who was smirking still. He sent the death glare back before starting to fill in more of the paper. I sighed, not waiting to get out off here. I keep playing with the bottom of my hospital suit, feeling the over-lapped silky cotton.
Several of minutes later, my boss, Matt, slid the paper across to me and asked me to sign it. I grabbed a pen from the little pen holder and started signing it with shaky hands. I slid the paper back to Matt and smiled a little.
"Seriously though, you should take up my offer." Matt always had to have the last say. I frowned, pushing my chair back and standing up, ready to leave.
"That's a great offer, Matt, maybe you could help me with it." I smirked back, turning so my back was to him, and walked out the door.
I took a deep breath as I exited Matt's room and headed to the reception. I saw Mary frowning at the computer. I slowly shifted to her, coughing.
"Hey, Mary." I smiled sadly, saying those signature words to Mary. She looked up from her screen and smiled gleefully.
"Oh. Hi, Alex!" I smiled a little bit happier seeing my brown haired best friend. She looked amazing as usual. Eyeliner giving that extra touch to her looks along with other make-up. She was wearing a red dress with black poker dots over her skinny frame.
"What's up?" She asked, smiling still. I reached over the desk and hugged her.
"Woah, Alex." She chuckled against me as I hugged her tightly. I smelled in the expensive perfume she had used and cuddled more. After a couple of seconds I pulled away with no expression.
"That was my goodbye hug." I sadly said.
"Awhh, wait...GOODBYE?!" Shock over took her face as she realised what I had said. I nodded slowly, feeling terrible. I loved Mary with all my heart, but I don't need to make a big deal out of it; I'll she her again.
"This job doesn't fit perfectly." I shrugged, playing with the bottom of my work top again. She ooh'd sending me a sympathized look.
"Well, you were great, Alex!" She smiled, beaming. I chuckled quietly.
"Yeah well, you only live down my street so I'll be seeing you soon! I really have to go." I frowned, savoring the look of the desk.
"Where to? You don't have a job anymore." She said, matter-of-factly. I chuckled nervously, remembering my plan to what I was going to do: get drunk.
"To the pub." I smiled. She giggled and rolled her eyes.
"Well, I guess I'll see you soon?" Mary looked up to me. I nodded, agreeing.
I sent a small wave to the smiling Mary and she returned it. I turned around and started making my way out the hospital.
For once, I felt free and loose.
