KAY
Jack unlocked the door to our apartment in Baltimore and stood to the side, allowing me to go in first.
"Such a gentleman." I laughed.
"You know it, babe."
Looking around the apartment, I sighed. "It's odd. Coming back here, I feel different than I did when I left. It's like this is home for real now. I'm not just visiting anymore."
"I was wondering if you felt that, too. Like, it feels as if you're here more permanently now. And I'm sure once your stuff gets delivered it'll feel even more like that."
"Yeah, you're stuck with me now." I grinned, pulling him in and wrapping my arms around his neck and kissing him. He wrapped his arms tightly around my waist.
"I wouldn't have it any other way." He rested his forehead against mine, grinning. I twisted away from him and walked over to the CD player. I put Mayday Parade's A Lesson In Romantics in and started dancing to the first song, "Jaime All Over". Jack grabbed my hands and danced with me. We bounced around the living room to "Black Cat" and "When I Get Home, You're So Dead". Once "Jersey" started, we slowed to a calm sway. Jack's hands settled to my hips and I rested mind on the back of his neck.
"I really love this song." I whispered, slightly breathless.
"Me too. It reminds me of you." He whispered back. Suddenly, there was a knock at the door, so I turned the music off and answered it.
"Oh, hey Alex, come on in."
"We record tomorrow, Kay! We have to practice the acoustic song!" He yelled, walking right past me.
"Oh, okay." I chucked as he sat down at the small kitchen table.
"Jack, can you play this for us?"
"Sure, man." He said, walking to the bedroom and returning with the acoustic guitar. When he sat down at the table, I leaned against the wall, watching them talk about scales and progressions like their lives were at stake. It made me grin.
"Alright, Kay. Jack's going to play the thing and I'll sing and you sing the back like we wrote it."
"I'm pretty sure I know what to do." I laughed, causing Alex to playfully glare at me.
"Anyway. One, two, three, four."
Jack started the intro and I watched in awe as his trained fingers danced over the frets and strings, sounding effortlessly beautiful. Alex began to sing, and I sang my part, which was basically harmonies and singing "two AM, swollen eyes, too sad to dream" during the chorus. But, I got to sing the entire bridge, "At two AM when I'm too sad to dream / wrap your arms around me / so I can breathe you in / and know I've made it home / because I only feel at home in your arms."
When we finished the song, Jack asked Alex, "What is this one about, anyway?" Alex looked at me, expectantly.
With a blush, I said, "You, Jack. It's inspired by my favorite memory with you."
"Oh. What's that?" He grinned.
"Remember all those months ago, when we were on Warped Tour? My first two nights on the bus."
"Yeah!"
"I opened up to you and both nights you held me and hummed to me, which calmed me down and helped me go to sleep. Those nights, being held by you, I felt the safest I had in years, Jack."
"Oh my gosh. Kay, I had no clue. That's amazing." He blushed a bit. We sat in a few moments of silence, until Alex spoke.
"Well...this has been awkward enough for me. Kay, you, Cass, and I are recording vocals tomorrow. Meet us at the studio at eight?"
"Sounds like a plan." I smiled. Alex got up to leave.
"See you guys later." He waved and left.
"So is that really about me?" Jack asked once the door shut.
"Yeah, Jack." I blushed. "I only feel safe when I'm with you. You're the only person I've felt that way with."
"Wow. That's just...amazing. Come here." He stood up and took my hand. He led out onto the balcony and stood facing me by the railing.
"I was going to wait to give you this until later tonight, but now feels right." He reached into his pocked and pulled out a black ring box.
"Jack...I...neither of us are ready for this. We're both so immature and-" I sighed.
"No, this isn't a proposal, I promise." He chuckled, cutting me off. He opened the box and turned it toward me. Inside was a ring that was made from a silver strand and a gold strand twisting together and wrapping around a small diamond in the center.
"Jack, it's beautiful." I whispered.
"I really wanted to give you an engagement ring. But I know we aren't ready to get married. So this is a promise ring. Kay, will you promise me, someday when we're both ready, we can get married?"
I looked into his eyes. He looked so adorable and hopefull. "Of course, Jack. I promise you, we can get married someday." I whispered, smiling softly.
Grinning, he took my left hand and slid the shining ring onto my ring finger. "And I promise you, It'll be the most punk rock wedding ever. We're playing nothing but Blink-182." We both leaned our forearms on the balcony railing and looked out over Baltimore.
"Sounds good to me, babe." I laughed as his arm wrapped around my waist, pulling me in close. I rested my head against him. We sat in silence for a while, until Jack broke the silence.
"You know, Kay, you're the best thing that's ever happened to me." He whispered, barely audible.
"You're the best thing that's ever happened to me, too. By far." He cut me off with a kiss, that quickly escalated. We kissed on the balcony for a while, until Jack lifted my legs up by my knees and carried me off to our bedroom.

Notes
