Waking up (Alex POV)
Trigger warning: Mention of Death
Alex POV
People were screaming for me. I turned around to push through the few people keeping me from the place of action. I could hear water splashing and someone talking to 911. It smelled of chlorine. When I arrived at the place, I saw a man rhythmically push something down. I got closer, slowing down. The moment I saw the person’s face that was underneath the man, everything got white.
I woke up with a start. Elaine. My beautiful little baby girl. Just one moment of not paying attention and she had been gone. I got up to calm myself down. I walked into the kitchen and poured myself a glass of water. I could hear Jack snore lightly but it was kind of cute.
I walked around in the living room for some more, careful not to be too loud with Jack sleeping close to me. Slowly, I calmed down. The worst thing was that I wasn’t even able to tell myself that it had just been a dream because it was real. It was so goddamn real. It hurt so much. I went back to my room and lay down. I couldn’t stop the memories from flooding my mind. How I missed her. I started crying again.
Today seemed to be particularly bad. Probably due to Jack being here and seeing the bedsheets and all that. I cried for a long time, until my pillow was soaked and I had no more tears left. Then I slowly slid into an uneasy zone between sleep and wakening.
When I got up, I felt like shit. The only reason I got up was because I wanted to look after Jack. He was just waking up as I came into the living room. He looked adorable with sleep hair and eyes.
“Hi Jack,” I greeted him. “How’d you sleep?”
“It was amazing. So soft and warm. How about you?” he said, smiling happily.
“Okay,” I lied. ”I’m glad you liked it, would you like some breakfast now?” I asked. Jack looked unsure and lowered his head. “You know that you can have anything you want to have, don’t you?” I added. He looked at me.
“I’m not worth any of your food, you need it yourself,” he said quietly. I was shocked. I walked over to him and crouched down in front of the man.
“Jack, you know that is not true. You are amazing and worth every last bit of food,” I said softly. He seemed still insecure and unsure. I touched his leg a little. “It is okay. I have enough food for two grown men,” I promised. He nodded slowly. “So, what do you want on your bread?” I asked as we walked into the kitchen.
“Nothing?” he replied.
“Nothing doesn’t count. I have strawberry jam, apricot jam, cheese, butter, Nutella or peanut butter. You can also try several,” I insisted. He thought about it for a bit before settling for a peanut butter sandwich. I made it and gave it to him. He smelled it before closing his eyes and biting into it. This time, he didn’t moan. I had to grin a tiny bit about the memory and he smiled a tiny bit too when he saw me smile.
We ate in silence and then I decided I would take him to one of my favourite places in the city. The aquarium.
