Homeless
Take me with you (Alex POV)
I walked home through the snow, careful not to slip on the ice. Snowflakes were all around me, flying with the icy wind. It was beautiful but I knew it could be deadly at such temperatures. The sun was already going down. I felt good about inviting Jack to have a pizza and a hot chocolate with me. I had actually helped someone.
I arrived home and unlocked the door. I walked up the many stairs to my flat and unlocked it as well. The familiar smell of home hit me and it was nice and warm. I put off my coat and my beanie and got out of my boots. I switched on the light and made my way to the couch. I plopped down on it and got the blanket to cover myself. It was warm and fluffy and I couldn’t stop thinking about Jack.
He was out in the cold now, only a few layers of clothing and a blanket similar to mine protecting him from the freezing cold while I was inside, cuddled up under a blanket in my nice heated apartment. He had only the box with the pizza rests in it while I had a whole fridge and a few cupboards stashed with food. He had to sleep with only the thin cardboard separating him from the ground while I was lying on this soft couch.
I needed to do something about it. I couldn’t let someone freeze to death, especially not a cutie like Jack. I got up quickly, suddenly anxious about every second passing. Today was the coldest it had been in ages, the temperatures were way below freezing point. I quickly slipped on my boots and hurried to get into my coat. I grabbed my keys and locked the door before running down the stairs. I continued to run until I reached the side-street. I skidded around the corner and reached Jack.
The box was turned against the wall, presumably to protect him a little more from the cold wind and the snow. I tapped it lightly and said his name. Nothing. I started panicking; what if he was dead?
“Jack, it’s me, Alex,” I said a little too loud maybe. Now, something moved inside the box. I breathed out, I was so relieved. I could’ve never forgiven myself if he had died.
The box fell over and revealed a little ball of blanket and human. Dark eyes looked at me.
“Hi Alex,” Jack mumbled, “What is it?”
“Hi Jack. I… I have something to propose,” I said quietly.
“What?”
“I kinda thought you could stay with me for the night…” I could see his eyes widen in surprise.
“Alex, do you even know what you’re saying? I’m a random homeless guy, hell, I’m not even worth a second glance! You’ve already done too much for me!” he replied loudly. I could see tears glistening in his eyes and it broke my heart.
“Look, I just want you to get away from the cold. You can sleep on my couch, have a hot bath, eat as much as you want and have some old clothing of me. You are worth it,” I said, trying to soothe him. I wanted to comfort him so bad even though he smelled a bit strong. A tear left his eye, rolling down his cheek.
“I’m not worth all of this. You should go home and live your happy life. I’ll be okay,” he mumbled.
“No, listen, you are worth all this. I want to make you feel better. Please, let me help you,” I insisted. He remained silent for a bit, looking at me. Then, he sat up.
“Okay… But I really don’t want to be a burden. Just tell me and I will leave again,” he whispered. I smiled.
“You aren’t a burden, shh.”
I helped him up and he stashed the box in the hiding place again. He took the pizza box and we left.
