Homeless

A Meal with You (Jack POV)

Jack POV

“I want you to eat my pizza with me,” the guy said, giving me a smile. What the fuck? Nobody ever shared something with me. Not even a tiny piece of bread or a blanket. And now this man, Alex as he had introduced himself, wanted to share a big, delicious, warm pizza with me?

“What?” I said, expressing my disbelief. Maybe this was just a joke and he wanted to make fun of me. But he didn’t look like the type. He looked rather handsome to be honest. Caramel hair framed a beautiful face with hazel eyes and he looked strong but not too muscular and bulky.

“I want you to share this pizza with me,” he said again. Oh my god, maybe he was serious. The smile on his face only helped me believe it. I could feel a smile creeping on my lips too. How long since I had last smiled? I couldn’t even remember it.

“Oh okay I guess if you want to? Do you want to… sit down or something?” I proposed, shuffling in my tiny box, suddenly feeling embarrassed of my living conditions.

“You know what? You’re gonna come with me to the pizza place and we will eat it in the warmth. I think you need some heat,” he said. What was going on, was this an angel? My smile developed into a grin and I almost felt tears coming to my eyes. He mirrored my expression and I liked his smile.

I got up, folded my box and put it behind one of the trashcans. My legs felt wobbly, I hadn’t done much walking in the past few weeks, only looking through the garbage in search of food. I hadn’t eaten properly in ages though and felt very weak. I wrapped the blanket around me and focused on not blacking out. I could feel Alex’s eyes on me. Maybe he was rethinking all this. But when I turned around, he gave me a mesmerizing smile. I shyly smiled back.

“Let’s go then!” Alex said. I obliged, trying not to stumble and fall. But I was so weak, it was really hard. He was walking at a fast pace and I couldn’t keep up. He noticed and looked at me.

“Jack, what is it?” I wasn’t worth caring about. I needed to keep up, no matter what.

“Nothing,” I lied. He gave me a stern look before walking on. Again, I fell behind. Snowflakes were hitting my face and blocked my view so I didn’t see a piece of ice on the ground. My foot got caught on it and I fell. I hit the ground hard, pain shooting through my body. A tiny wince escaped my mouth. Alex turned around.

“Jack!” he semi-shouted worriedly. “Are you okay?” I nodded although pain was everywhere. I wasn’t worth any care. “Are you sure?” Alex asked and I nodded again. He helped me up and held my lower arm to steady me. I forced myself to walk on and managed not to welp with every step I made. We finally reached the pizza place and Alex held the door open for me. I hobbled in and was greeted by the owner of the place.

“No entry for you,” he said, blocking any further entrance. I looked up, he was a bulky guy, and well fed.

“He is with me Marco,” Alex said, getting in between me and the man. Marco looked unconvinced but he let us pass. He mumbled something about “damn dirty hobos” and I felt more worthless than ever before. I realized that whatever Alex might make me believe, I was still homeless, dirty and worthless. Alex led me to a table and sat me down.

“Wait just a second, I got to do something,” he said. I watched him go to the counter, talking to the blonde waitress. She nodded and got out two cups. She did some things behind the counter, out of my view, but when she was done, she handed two cups to Alex. He gave her some money and thanked her before walking back. I panicked. Was that something for me? But probably not, why would anyone ever give me so much. He reached my table and handed me one of the cups.

It was a hot chocolate. For me. I couldn’t take this. He had already done so much for me. But it looked like heaven and the warmth from the mug was almost burning my icy fingers. I looked up to Alex and he nodded reassuringly. I thought about it for just one more second but then the hunger got the best of me. I tilted the mug and let some of the hot liquid flow into my mouth.
It tasted as it looked, like actual heaven. I hadn’t tasted chocolate nor milk in years and now I got both at once, mixed together into a drink that angels would kill for. And it was so warm! I sighed in delight before taking another sip. I didn’t dare to drink too fast, I wanted to savour every drop.

Meanwhile, Alex unpacked the pizza. I looked at it hungrily. He cut it into two halves and made them into smaller pieces before handing a plate with my half on it to me. I set down the mug and took a piece of the still warm pizza. I held it to my nose and breathed in. I was overwhelmed by many delicious smells, I hadn’t smelled a pizza in ages either. I couldn’t stop myself from eating anymore, I took a bit of the pizza. Flavours burst on my tongue. So many flavours, oh my god. I couldn’t hold back a moan and blushed immediately. Alex looked amused.

I ate some more of the pizza until I couldn’t fit anything more into my stomach, shrunk from months of barely eating. I looked up at Alex, he still had something left on his plate but he was finished, sitting back with his arms crossed. He smiled at me.

“Full?” he asked.

“Yes… Thank you so much,” I said, smiling. Never before had anyone done anything so generous and selfless for me.

“Do you want to take the leftovers with you?” he offered. I could feel tears coming to my eyes; he was amazing. But why would I have the right to take the leftovers? I was just some random hobo he had met.

“Are you sure you don’t want them?” I asked insecurely.

“I’m sure,” he said, nodding.

“Then… yes please,” I mumbled, embarrassed because of me needing this. He packed the pieces into the previously full box and handed it to me.

“Thank you so much,” I said. He smiled more widely, showing his stunning teeth. He got up and walked out. I followed him; it was now easier for me to keep pace with him although it still hurt like hell to walk. I tried to conceal my hobbling as well as possible but he may have noticed.
We soon reached my usual place and I got out the box, my home, from behind the trashcan. I prepared it until I was able to sit in it and sat down. He handed me the pizza box and gave me one last smile before saying goodbye.

“Bye Jack. If you need anything, I walk by here almost every day so just shout at me when I walk by or something.”

“Thank you so much; I just wish I could return the favour,” I replied. “I will never forget you, Alex.”

“I won’t forget you either,” he replied before turning around and walking away.

Mhm to be honest, I haven't been thinking about a sequel too much because for me, this story is finished and over. I could maybe do one single chapter about their future (like an epilogue to the epilogue haha) if people would want me to.
