The food in Jacks house had quickly grown scarce over the course of the vacation, and he decided it would be a good time to go grocery shopping. His mom hadn’t been home in over two weeks, but she left him emergency money in the cookie jar. The walk to the store was short, and it was nice to get out of the house. The only thing he hated about going the store, was having to pass Alex’s. He lived only a block down from Jack. That’s how they had become best friends. He walked by the house, keeping his head ducked low. He moved as quickly as he could, but stopped suddenly when he heard someone call his name.

“Jack? Is that you?” It was Isobel Gaskarth. Jack turned to face her, smiling politely.

“Hi, Mrs. Gaskarth.” Jack called, kicking nervously at a pebble on the sidewalk.

“Where have you been? I haven’t seen you in ages.” She said, making Jack feel uncomfortable.

“I-I uh, I’ve been really busy.” Jack lied, wanting this conversation to just end.

“Oh, well drop by anytime Jacky. We all miss you.” Isobel said.

“Alright, Mrs. Gaskarth. It was good seeing you.” Jack said, waving.

“You too.” Mrs. Gaskarth waved back, and returned to her gardening, and Jack headed towards the store. He quickly scanned the isles for what he needed, throwing random food articles into the cart. Once he felt he had enough, he went to the check out.

The line wasn’t long, but the lady before him had a lot of stuff. He looked around to see the other lines, when one of the lights signaling a new desk was opening. Jack hurried over, and started placing his stuff on the counter.

“Paper, or Plastic?” The voice asked. Jack knew that voice. He looked up hesitantly, meeting Alex’s eyes. Of all places, he had to be here today. Alex’s eyes narrowed, but he had to be professional he was at work.

“Paper, please.” Jack said, looking everywhere but at Alex. He nodded, and scanned the items placing them into plastic bags. “Uh, I said paper.” Jack pointed out.

“We’re all out.” Alex said, continuing to shove the food into the plastic bags. When he was done, Jack gave Alex the perfect amount of money and hurried off, not looking back once.

At home, Jack ate a quick lunch, and then took out his guitar for a few hours. He hadn’t played his guitar since middle school, and it felt nice to have it in his hands. He plucked absently at the strings for a while, until a song popped into his head. He remembered the chords perfectly. It was a song Alex had written in eighth grade. Jack played, the song filling the empty house. He even remembered some of the lyrics, so he decided to sing along.

“Make it a sweet goodbye, it could be for the last time and it’s not right. Don’t let yourself get in over your head, he said. Alone and far from home I’ll find you.” Jack sang, but was interrupted by his phone ringing. He frowned, placing the guitar next to his bedside table and picking up his phone. Looking at the small screen, he froze. Alex’s name flashed in front of his eyes. He didn’t wait very long before picking it up.

“H-Hello.” Jack said nervously.

“How’s that project coming along, Barakat?” Alex asked, not sounding to keen to be talking to Jack. Jacks eyes widened. He’d totally forgotten about the project. He mentally slapped himself in the face.

“It’s coming along great.” Jack lied. There was a pause on the other line for a brief minute.

“Great. I’m coming over to check it out. See you in a minute.” Alex said, and then the line went died. Jack sat on his bed, unable to move. He was afraid of what Alex was going to do to him for lying. Surely it wouldn’t be good.
