Jack sat in Physics the next day, listening as the teacher droned on about a partner lab that would be started on Monday. Jack hated partner assignments, because he always got put with people who did no work.

“You must conduct an experiment on motion. You must model a car that can pull a five pound weight. You and your partner will have to meet up after school, and on the weekends to do this project, because you won’t be given much time in class.” Mr. Cross said, scanning the classroom. “I’ve chosen your parters, they are as followed.” Jack didn’t listen much after that, until Mr. Cross got to his name. “Jack Barakat, you will be with Alex Gaskarth.” Jack could feel his stomach begin to turn. He glanced behind him, and Alex was already glaring at Jack. He sunk in his chair, trying his best to hide until the bell finally ring. Jack quickly exited the classroom, running to his locker to collect his stuff for next class.

“Barakat!” He heard Alex yell behind him. He kept his head down, and sped up trying to reach the classroom, before Alex reached him. He wasn’t quick enough. He felt himself being yanked back, and his books tumbled to the ground. “You listen to me when I fucking talk to you. You’ll only make it worse for yourself.” Alex hissed, pushing Jack backwards into the lockers. “You’re doing the physics assignment alone, because if you think I’ll be spending anytime with you, you’re wrong.” Jack was terrified.

“B-But it’s a p-partner assignment.” Is all Jack could muster up. Alex still had a tight hold on him, and he was pressed uncomfortably up against a lock.

“I don’t fucking care, you worthless fuck. You’re going to do it, and you’re going to put both of our names on it.” Alex hissed, pushing him harder into the lock. Jack whimpered quietly, squeezing his eyes shut. Before he could say anything, he heard Alex yelp, and then his grip disappeared. Jack opened his eyes, to see Alex pushed against the opposite wall. A senior stood above him, pinning him to the wall.

“You leave him the fuck alone, do you hear me? If I see you fucking with him again, I will fuck you up.” The senior said, making Alex squirm. He nodded, and the guy dropped him and laughed as he ran off.

“Th-thank you.” Jack said, stepping forward. The older boy turned around, and smiled.

“No problem, I hate that guy. My names Rian.” He said, holding out his hand. Jack reluctantly took it, giving it a shake.

“Jack.” He said, bending down to pick up his books.

“Let me help you with that.” Rian said, getting down and collecting some of the books. He handed them to Jack, and smiled.

“Thank you.” Jack said, smiling back.

“If he gives you anymore trouble, just tell me and I’ll take care of it, alright?” Jack nodded hesitantly. “Well, I gotta go to class. I’ll see you later.” Rian waved, and then the two went there separate ways.
