Long Live Us

Chapter Two

*Alex's pov*

Alex was sat in the reception of the new school, in a cushioned green chair. He'd been waiting 10 minutes for his new form tutor, after finishing his talk with the head master. Alex thought the school seemed alright, and not absolutely massive as he had previously feared. He had chosen a navy suit and red tie to become his school uniform, and he thought it made him look really grown up. He smiled at the thought, because the nerves in his stomach reminded him he still felt very much like a child. Starting at the new school was terrifying for Alex, especially somewhere that he had only been living in for a few months. His family had moved from Essex all the way to America, to a town called Baltimore. It was a nice place, he felt, and it had definitely helped his parents with the death of their other son and Alex's older brother, Tom. Alex missed him dearly, and constantly though about the boy. Shaking his head, Alex began tapping his foot to make sure he wouldn't have a panic attack. Because that would make starting here a lot worse than it could already be.

The front door to the school was opened, and Alex looked up too see a man walk in. He was wearing tight trousers with a white shirt and black skinny tie. Nothing about him suggested he was a teacher - he looked young enough to be in the same year group as the new boy, and was dressed exactly as he would be. The only give away was the tag around his neck with the school logo, and his small pass hanging on his chest.
"Hey, you must be Alexander." The man said, strolling up too Alex and offering his hand. Nervously, he shook his hand, and told him that he preferred Alex.
"Okay Alex, nice too meet you. I'm Mr Wilkinson, your form tutor. I'm gonna pair you up with a boy called Jack because he's in all your classes. He can be a bit loud and intimidating I guess, but he's an alright lad and a good crack, I'm sure you'll get on fine." He smiled, and Alex nodded shyly, terrified by the sound of this boy. "Let's get going then." Mr Wilkinson said, leading the quiet boy towards the door.

His new teacher led Alex into a new block, which he figured was the science block, and stopped when they reached the door called "Lab II". Alex ran a hand through his brown hair nervously, straightening out his suit and clutching his bag. Mr Wilkinson gave him a reassuring smile before entering the class. Immediately Alex felt that all eyes were on him, and he stepped slowly into the room. He dared to glance up, and saw that nobody was laughing or pointing, everyone just seemed to watch him curiously.
"Right guys this is Alex and he's going to introduce himself." The teacher said with a nod, motioning for Alex to step forward. Alex felt his palms get sweaty and they were probably trembling aswell, but he tried to stop his voice from shaking.
"Erm, hey, my name's Alex Gaskarth and I've just moved from Essex."
"Oh shut upp!" Someone shouted, in the stereotypical girly Essex way, gaining a laugh from most of the class. Horror shot through his small body as he began to fear the worst, that everybody was going to hate him. Already. He raised his head slowly, to try and find out what was really going on. All eyes were on a boy sitting in the middle table. He had jet black hair that swept across his forehead, and his dark brown eyes glistened. He was obviously lanky, as his figure was hunched too lean on the table, his hands clamped together. The boy smiled at Alex, his lips curling upwards and forming dimples on his cheeks. Alex smiled back, then quickly broke eye contact. Before Alex could decide what he thought of this boy, the form tutor went "right okay calm down, thank you for that Jack."
"It's alright Wilko." The boy said back.
'Oh my god, THATS Jack?' Alex thought, scared even more. This boy was loud, confident, funny and drop dead gorgeous. Everything Alex most definitely was not. What if Jack didn't like him? He was obviously a cool kid, so he wouldn't like being stuck with the new boy... Various worries ran through Alex's head, and he tried not to stare at the dark haired boy.

Mr Wilkinson handed Alex a diary and a medical form which needed to be filled out. He put both into his bag, knowing he would be getting on with this teacher as he returned a warm smile. Then came the moment he was dreading, "Jack, come here please" he called. The lanky boy looked up, offended and ready to defend himself, but obviously thought better of arguing and came up to the front. Now that Jack was standing, Alex got a better view of him. As he guessed, the boy was tall, quite a bit taller than Alex. His hands were tucked into his pockets, and his dark suit clung to him, showing off how thin he was. He had dark, thick eye brows, that complimented his round, chocolate brown eyes. He was laid back and confident, and Alex couldn't blame him. Alex knew there was probably no point trying to talk to this guy, he wouldn't actually care about the new boy.
"Am I on new boy duty?" Jack said, and Alex was instantly mesmerised by the rough tone to his voice.
"Yes, Jack, you are. Alex is in all your classes so ya'know I figured it was easiest for everyone." Sir said, smiling at Alex and flicking his hand to signal for Jack to get on with it. Alex stood completely still, terrified about what would happen next.
'How should I act? Is my hair okay? Oh my god what's happening?!' was all Alex could think about. He was brought out of his trance by the soft, yet deep voice talking.
"Er, so yeah I'm Jack, I guess you can come and sit with me and Rian whilst we do all the crappy form time stuff, and yeah...Alex right?" Jack smiled down at Alex, a kind and supportive smile, which made Alex smile back.
"Yeah, Alex, and okay I'm just gonna have to follow your lead..." He murmured, trying not too show his nervousness. Jack chuckled, replying "yeah you probably won't want too do that when you hear what teachers have to say about me." He ran his hand through his black hair before flicking his head to the side to his fringe fell back into place, and began leading Alex to where he was sitting. He led him over to the table, where there was a muscular, short haired boy with bright white teeth, and two girls.
"Right this is Rian," Jack told Alex, pointing to the boy, who gave Alex a dazzling smile. "And this is Lucy and Hayley" Jack continued, motioning to the girls, who both smiled kindly at Alex.

Alex took his seat next to Rian, and watched Jack sit back down on his own seat on Rian's other side.
"How ya doing?" Rian asked Alex, who nodded in reply. "Thank God you got put with someone quieter this time Jack." The boy said, and the two laughed, and Jack put his hands on his face.
"Shut up Rian that was an awful experience which should never ever be spoken about." Jack said through laughs. Alex looked on, confused, until Jack looked up and met his gaze. After a few seconds of eye contact, Jack sighed and began to tell the story.
"Basically, last time I got paired with a newbie, it was some really loud kid, who did not shut up for shit, and oh my god he would just talk constantly! Like, literally non-stop! I swear he had some sort of verbal diarrhoea!" Jack broke down into laughter again, and Rian added, "Oh my god remember how he had a massive argument with the old maths teacher about that circle theory thing?" causing them both to laugh even more. Alex giggled to himself, amused by how funny the two boys found this. Maybe this wasn't going to be so bad, maybe Jack was a decent guy and would be nice to him. Just maybe.
