A Daydream Away

Everyone's Watching and Waiting

Jacks POV
“Alex!” I heard a voice yell from across the room.
I twisted my face back to the spot it was at not two seconds previously, but instead of my eyes landing on the face of Alex Gaskarth, they landed on his empty seat, and his best friend panicking.
My legs were moving faster than my brain, and I was suddenly next to him, much to my friends, and everyone else’s surprise.
“What happened?” I questioned quickly, spinning the smaller boy over so his back was on the ground. My heart was pounding. What if he was hurt? Could his blood pressure low or something?
“I don’t- I don’t know. He just started hyperventilating and went really pale and then just fell over.” His friend said. What was his name? Riley? Richard? Rian?
“Well, we need to sit him up or he’s going to have a harder time breathing. Can one of you go get the nurse?”
Before I knew it, Richard or whatever was helping me sit Alex up, and the other dude was running for help. They worked together so well, not even having to decide who did what. I admired it quickly, jealous that I didn’t have someone I could connect with that well.
Soon, Alex was propped up against a leg of one of the tables, and the other friend was coming back with the nurse, who had a wheel chair. Both of Alex’s friends looked extremely worried, which made me smile a bit. They really cared about Alex, and that was awesome.
“Good job, boys. Good thing you knew to prop him up, or he would have been running out of air. Since he’s breathing and there’s no blood, bruising, or liquid anywhere, all we can do is take him back to the nurse’s office, call his parents, and wait for him to get up. Do you know if he hit his head when he went down?” The nurse looked at me for an answer, probably because I was still sitting next to Alex.
I opened my mouth to tell her I wasn’t there when it happened, but Riley or Richard or Rian responded before I could.
“He didn’t hit his head, but he landed on his arm pretty bad.” The nurse nodded. I could tell she was trying to figure out how to get him into the wheel chair without hurting his arm even more.
Before anyone said anything, I slipped my arms under his armpits and lifted him slowly off the ground. Once he was just about on his feet, I walked back slowly, moving towards the wheel chair. Luckily, the nurse got the idea and moved the wheel chair towards us. When I was close enough to sit, I nodded at the friend who went to get the nurse. At first he shot me a confused look, but when I started slipping my arm out from his left side, he understood what I was trying to tell him. He slipped his arm under Alex’s just as I took mine out, and I turned to the side, leaving Alex’s back to the chair. We both took one step sideways, making the boy in our arms move closer to the chair. I nodded at the guy across from me, and we sunk down, sitting Alex down in chair.
A crowd had gathered around us and suddenly everyone started clapping. Alex’s friend started blushing, but I was used to everyone staring at me. I was the class clown.
Instead of taking a dramatic bow with a stupid smile on my face, I just turned around and started walking out the lunch room. I wasn’t needed anymore, and that was fine by me. I had some things to think about anyway.
But, before I could get very far, Richard or Riley or Rian called out my name. I spun around to face him, not wanting to talk to anyone, but forcing myself to be pleasant.
“Hey, thanks for your help back there. We really appreciate it.” He said smiling. God, his teeth were white as fuck.
“Uh, it’s no problem.” I mumbled, trying to cut the conversation short.
“Where’d you learn how to do all that? It was really cool what you did, and without any hesitation or anything.” He looked up at me with admiration, and I smiled down at him.
“Well, don’t tell anyone, but I help coach my little bothers t-ball team. Sometimes the kids pass out, and it is my job to help them up and get better. That’s why I ran over so quick, instinct took over.” I told him. The t-ball thing was true, but something different made me run over to help the boy in my history class.
“Well, I’m glad you knew all that. We have a ton to thank you for. But you look like you have somewhere to be, so I’ll let you get going. See ya around, Jack.”
“Hey no problem.” I smiled, watching him turn away. Fuck, I never figured out his name.
“Hey- hey wait!” I said, raising my voice louder than I wanted to.
He spun around in surprise and I scratched the back of my head awkwardly. I let out a quiet chuckle, trying to word the question right. “So, uh, this is a bit awkward because you’re in my class. But, uh, what’s your name?”
“It’s Rian. Rian Dawson. And it’s no problem, man. The muscly dude is Zack Merrick, and the guy you just helped was Alex Gaskarth.” Rian said, pointing to the two individuals he was speaking of.
I noted the two names I didn’t know, and fought the urge to say that I already knew Alex’s name. I wasn’t supposed to know Alex’s name.
I nodded at Rian and thanked him quietly, then he turned and walked back to Zack. They both quickly followed the nurse back to her office and I was left alone in the lunch room.
I didn’t want to be alone here. Without thinking, I moved straight to the front doors. I didn’t quite know where I was going, I just knew I needed to be anywhere but here.
There were too many other voices that effected my decisions here. I was never alone in this huge building.
The truth was, I liked being alone, as long as I was alone with someone else. Someone who wasn’t my idiot friends or my stupid parents.
I needed to find someone I could be alone with, and something in the back of my mind screamed Alex Gaskarth was just the right person.
