Who Said It Was Gonna Be Easy?

After a few hours, I'd finished all my homework and was sat watching tv when I heard the doorbell ring. I sighed, forcing myself up off my bed to go and answer it.


When I opened the door I found jack stood there. He held out a single red rose to me with a shy smile.

"jack, what are you doing?" I sighed, taking the rose and letting my hand fall back by my side.

"I'm here to pick you up for our date"

"we dont have one"

"it's a surprise date" he said happily. I sighed again, actually wanting to tell him to go away.

"fine. Do I look okay like this?" jack was wearing a shirt and a thin black tie, with some black skinny jeans and some black converse. I was wearing a band tee, skinny jeans and a hoodie.

"yeah, course" the corners of his mouth turned up,

"I feel underdressed" I frowned.

"you look perfect" he said softly. He held my gaze for a prolonged amount of time before I looked down.

"I'm..just gonna go get my phone then" he nodded, leaning against the wall whilst he waited. I turned around and ran up the stairs, walking into my room. I sat down on my bed, grabbing my phone and texting Cass to tell her that jack had showed up to take me on a surprise date. She replied quickly telling me to have fun and that she wished me luck in finding out what was wrong with him, or at least that it wasn't too awkward. I replied telling her it probably wouldn't be awkward because he looked really hot and we'd actually managed to have a civil conversation. She then replied saying she would keep her fingers crossed for me that I "got lucky". I laughed to myself before quickly changing my top and pulling my hoodie back on. I sprayed myself with lynx then studied my appearance in my full length mirror. I don't know why I even had this thing. I detested looking at my reflection.


I looked shit but I guess I could've looked worse. The bags under my eyes were definitely unattractive, although there was nothing I could do about them now.

"Alex, you look great. Hurry up!" jack called up the stairs as if he could see what I was doing. I blushed and picked my phone up off my bed before running back downstairs.

"do I need my keys?"

"uhh..I personally hope not. Depends if you want to be pessimistic or not" he smiled. I remembered how Cass had said she would keep her fingers crossed for me so I stepped outside and closed the door behind me.

"optimism, hey? I like it" he nudged me in the ribs with a grin. I grinned in spite of myself and looked down as we set off walking to his car. I felt his hand slip into mine and I glanced up at him. He smiled nervously and I laced our fingers together, causing him to grin widely. I was tired of ignoring him, although that didn't mean he was forgiven.

"so...what are we doing?"

"well..I didn't want to do the typical dinner and a movie kind of date, that's generic and no thoughts been put into it. You mean a heck of a lot more to me than just a dinner and a movie date. So I thought I'd surprise you. It's something special. I've planned it all out, you're going to love it...I hope. You're not afraid of water, are you?"

"um..no..?"

"good!" he grinned excitedly. He came around to the passengers side of the car and opened the car door for me which made me blush. He then got in the car and started the engine, driving away quickly as if he was scared I'd back out and go back home. Jack put the radio on as he drove, explaining that we could talk when we arrived so he could give me his full attention. He drove for what seemed like forever. The sun was starting to set by the time jack pulled over.

"where are we?"

"just a little place I know of" he smiled.

"wait there" he told me before getting out of the car. He ran around it and opened my car door for me, taking my hand to help me out. My face reddened: nobody had ever opened a door for me before. He got a big cardboard box from the back of his car, then pulled his guitar from in the boot and slung it over his shoulder. He carried the box with one hand and held mine with his other, leading me down a sandy dirt path surrounded by some reeds.

He led me down between a particularly thick patch of reeds and within seconds we arrived at a small hidden beach. It was lit up by small lanterns that were dotted around. There was a thick blanket big enough for two people laid out on the pale sand. He led me down the little beach and put his guitar down on the blanket.

"did you do all this?" I gaped at him.

"yeah, do you like it?"

"it's beautiful, jack" I let go of his hand as I walked forwards to let it all sink in.

"wait why did you ask if I'm afraid of water?" I asked curiously.

"I'm glad you asked" jack was by my side again, his fingers touching mine as if he longed to take my hand.

"come right this way" Jack gestured towards the water then curled his arm around my waist, holding the box under his other arm. I walked with him in the direction he'd pointed until we got close to the waters edge. There was a little wooden boat bobbing gently in the water. He set the box down in it then turned to me to see my reaction.

"lex?"

"jack...I-I don't know what to say..this is amazing..I can't believe you've done all this"

"why not? You're worth it. You're worth more than this. After the other day, I've realised how shit I must have made you feel. I didn't treat you like how important you are. You deserve so so much better. I wanted to show you how sorry I am and also make it up to you" he said, words tumbling out, his nose crinkling as he tried to slot his words together to explain what he was thinking. I nodded.

"that's not what I meant..it's hard to express what I'm thinking when you're stood right here, clouding my thoughts"

"well sorry. I'll just be going then" I joked. He grinned.

"no seriously though, I can't think straight"

"s'cause you're not" I retorted. He poked me and laughed. He then took both my hands in his and stepped closer to me.

"I guess I mean.." he trailed off and gave me a quick kiss. We both seemed to want more than just a quick peck on the lips. I'd missed him and he'd missed me. We both seemed to decide a quick kiss wasn't good enough at the same time. The world seemed to come to a complete standstill as we collided once more, jack pulling me closer, our kiss desperate and loving, all our emotions pouring out.


If someone had have been watching, all they'd have seen was two guys kissing on a small beach whilst a gentle breeze blew the reeds in the background and the waves lapped against the shore. All they'd have seen was a simple scene and, although neither of us realised it yet, it would have been obvious to them that a strong, pure love swelled in our hearts.
