Alex

*Knock! Knock! Knock!"

"Alexander, sweetie," my mom chirped happily, "it's time to get up, it's your first day today!"

I sighed softly, opening my eyes and adjusting to the early morning sun that shone through the crack between my curtains.
School. Public school.
I'd never been to a public school before, as I was transferred from Catholic school after it couldn't raise the money it needed to stay open, and there were no other schools in the state that supported my family's religious lifestyle, so here I am, about to start Dulaney High.

"I'm up, mom!" I called back, and I heard her footsteps disappear down the stairs.

I did my usual morning routine, shower, teeth and pack my bag for the day ahead, but as I looked around my room, it dawned on me; what was I going to wear? At my last school we were given uniforms, but at Dulaney you wear home clothes.
Rummaging through my drawers, I picked out a purple checked shirt which I combo'd with a burgandy pullover and a pair of chinos. Yeah, this looked decent enough, and it was really casual, so at least I wouldn't stand out.
I slipped on a fresh pair of socks and headed to the bathroom to sort out my hair, it was still damp after my shower so I quickly blow dried and pulled a brush through it.

I made my way downstairs, the smell of freshly made pancakes attacking my nostrils immediately. My dad was already sat at the head of the table as usual, newspaper in one hand, mug of coffee in the other.

"Morning dad, morning mom!" I greeted them as I sat down in my chair.

"Morning, Alexander," my dad replied, "how are you feeling?"

"Great thanks, a little nervous, but great." I answered as my mom came in from the ajoining kitchen, setting three pancakes on my plate.

"You'll be fine sweetie, don't worry about it." She commented whilst sitting down in her own seat.

I shrugged slightly as I stared down at my breakfast, cutting in to it. "What if it's completely different and no one likes me?"

My parents both chuckled at that and dismissed my skepticism, telling me that I was just over thinking, which I admit, I do often.

We all carried on with small talk for the next twenty or so minutes before I had to leave to to school, so I put my shoes on and made the short jouney to the place I would be spending the next couple of years.

Luckily for me, I had practiced the route before the semester started, so I didn't waste time getting lost. Ten or so minutes later, the red brick structure came in to view, cars pulling in and parking in the few remaining spots.
I took my backpack off, unzipped it and took out the school map I had printed off last night, and getting my bearings together, made my way to reception. The halls were bustling already, friends that hadn't seen eachother in weeks hugging and high-fiving one another whilst rambling on about their lastest summer escapades.
I tapped on the sliding glass at the side of the office to grab someone's attention, causing a wirey hair woman to flinch at the sudden sound and retract the glass, smiling at me.

"Good morning, how may I help you?"

"Hello," I smiled, "it's my first day here and I'm not sure where I'm meant to be."

The woman turned to her computer and clicked a few things before looking back at me. "What's your name?"

"Gaskarth. Alexander Gaskarth."

Her smile widened at that. "The Catholic boy?"

I laughed nervously, hitching my bag up higher. "Yeah, that's me."

She punched in a few buttons on the keyboard and printed off my schedule for this year. I thanked her and walked away down the corridor, whilst the receptionist welcomed me officially to the school.

I stopped as I went through the double doors and read the paper I held in my hand.

Period 1: AP English
Period 2: Art
Period 3: AP Math
Period 4: Gym
Period 5: Lunch
Period 6: Music

I promptly made my way to my first class and sat somewhere in the middle of the room, the same as with the rest of my lessons. Being a new student, I had to get up and introduce myself to everyone else and be forced into social situations that I found highly uncomfortable, so instead of getting caught up in 'Call of Duty' discussions, I focused my efforts on making notes and asking questions.

As I was leaving school at the end of the day, I realised how much I didn't fit in here; I dress totally different, speak different, act different andd overall, my attitude to learning is different.
Walking out of the gates and past the flag pole, I noticed a couple of guys smoking. How delightful. Being the clumsy person I am, I stubbed the toe of my shoe on a concrete slab that was sticking out of the ground a little, however, I caught myself and didn't fall flat on my face, but as I composed myself, I looked around to see one of the smokers, with what I can only describe as 'skunk-hair' laughing at me.
