I'll Paint You Wings

“Hey, Lex. We need you at the station.”

At those words, my heart shattered as I knew we wouldn’t be spending out first Christmas together.

"What? It's Christmas Eve!" I whisper shouted, cautious of the fact that Jack was sleeping just inside.

"'M sorry, Lex. Matt's shift ends soon and we need an EMT." Zack sighed.

"When do I need to be there?" I asked, burring my face into the hand that wasn't being used by my phone.

"Well it's eleven right now so probably around... three?" He said, not sounding too sure of himself.

I groaned loudly, "Fine. Let me get some cuddle time in with Lexi and Jack." I said softly.

"Kay, Alex. See you soon."

I nodded to myself as I hung up, false throwing it across the patio, "Fuck."

I sighed and quietly walked back inside and went to go pack my bag, stuffing in my phone charger, a pair of sweatpants, change of clothes, and set my clean pressed uniform on our table by the front door to be ready when I leave.

I noticed Lexi is no longer in Jack and I's bed so I went into her bedroom to get her so we could all cuddle for a bit.

I stared down at her sleeping form, her green and red stripped onesie, her hand tucked under her chin and the other over her head.

I reached down and gently scooped her up and cuddled her into my chest. She grunted in protest, making little sniffle sounds as I gently bounced her across the room trying to calm her down and prevent her from crying and potentially waking Jack up.

I checked my watch and saw how it was getting close to when she ate so I carried her into the kitchen, taking a pre-made bottle from the fridge. Skillfully, I popped off the cap with one hand and shook it before walking over to our recliner and slowly sitting down.

When I was covering myself with a blanket, the motion caused Lexi to wake up, little soft cries filling the room.

"Hi baby, daddy's here." I cooed against her hand as I brought the nipple to her mouth.

It took a few tries before she accepted it and began happily sucking away, sometimes a little too fast.

"Slow down, cutie." I muttered with a laugh.

I lent down and kissed her soft warm forehead after I pulled the bottle away from her for a second so she could catch her breath. She, of course, cried out, tiny hands waving around frantically for the bottle.

"Hey, give my daughter back her bottle." I jumped at the voice behind me, heart beat slowing down when I saw it was a shirtless Jack, rubbing the sleep from his brown eyes.

"What are you doing up?" I asked as I placed the nipple back into Lexi's mouth. She automatically shut up when I did.

Jack walked over and lent down to kiss my cheek before sitting down on the arm of the chair, starting to play with Lexi's hair, " I had my alarm set to feed her but I guess you beat me to it."

I smiled and leaned over and placed a soft kiss to one of Jack's scar patches on his chest, "I love you."

"Love you too, babe." He mumbled back against my hair, "Hey, uh, why is your gear packed by the door?" Jack added with a frown.

I sighed, hoping I would have been able to avoid telling him, "I... I have to go into the station tonight. Flyzik needs a fill in."

Jack's face fell, "But it's Christmas."

"I know baby, but I gotta go."

"Are you sure you can't get Rian or someone to cover your shift?" Jack pushed, knee nudging mine.

"They need an EMT baby, Rian isn't one." I said softly, pulling the bottle out of Lexi's mouth when I saw she was mainly sucking in air and placed it in the cup holder on the chair.

"When do you leave?" Jack sighed, rubbing harshly at his face.

I looked at my watch at bit my lip, "In a few hours. I was hoping we could all cuddle for a little bit." Jack smiled and nodded.

"Sounds great, baby."

"Okay, well lemme burp her and I'll be in there soon." I said softly as I moved Lexi so she was laying on my chest, face hanging over my shoulder.

"Do you want a towel?" Jack laughed.

"Yeah, she already threw up on me once."

Jack nodded and went to the kitchen and brought back a hand towel and placed it over my shoulder for me, "Thanks babe." I smiled as I started to pat Lexi's small back. She continued releasing small grunts her and there meaning she was burping.

I giggled and placed my lips to her temple and mumbled, "Well excuse you!"

I slowed down my pats to soft rubs on her back as I sat up to go into Jack and I's bedroom.

"Did she burp?" Jack asked from under the covers, the soft glow of the TV high lighting his features.

"Mhm. And she didn't puke on me so that's even better." I laughed as I slowly sat down on the bed, cradling Lexi back into my arms making silly kissy faces at her.

She was looking up at me with an intense look like she was almost studying me. Critizing my every move probably thinking, "This guys a freak"

I couldn't help but giggle though, "You're so stinking cute."

"Well thank you." Jack laughed, which caused me to smack him with my free hand, actually creating a decent sounding smack "I wasn't talking about you, I was talking to Lexi."

Jack faked a hurt expression, lip jutting out, "So I'm not cute?"

I laughed and leaned over to place a soft kiss under his ear before whispering, "Nope, you're," another soft kiss, "Sexy."

Jack shivered under my touch as I pulled away and turned my attention back to our daughter who had her tiny hand wrapped around my index finger, softly nibbling on it.

"I wish I could sing to her." I mumbled quietly.

"Maybe when she's older you can take her into the basement and play your guitar for her so she can feel the vibrations on her hands and feet." Jack said as he started to flick through the channels trying to find a decent Christmas movie. I couldn't help but smile when he chose Jack Frost.

"I'm surprised you didn't put on Home Alone."

Jack gasped, "Do you want me to turn it on? I mean I can if you want."

"No, no! This is fine. It's just that Home Alone has been on loop for a while. I'm surprised you didn't turn it back on" I giggled, reajusting myself on the bed where I was in between Jack's legs with my back against his chest and Lexi's chest against mine. Her tiny legs dangling off my sides.

"Isn't this supposed to be the other way 'round?" Jack asked, threading his fingers through my wavy hair, twisting a few strands.

"Hey, I don't know how long i'm going to be gone. I want you to cuddle me and I wanna cuddle Lexi."

"Fair enough." Jack shrugged, dipping his head down to kiss mine, "I'll miss you."

I felt my heart shatter as my head rolled back to rest on his shoulder also looking him in the eye, "Jack I won't be gone forever. Two, three, days at the max. It's not like when I went to school."

"Don't ever do that to me again." Jack mumbled as he kissed my temple.

I bit back a laugh as I remembered how I fell off the building and broke some bones, the motion of my chest startling Lexi awake, "Oh, crap. I didn't know you fell asleep." I cooed softly, picking her up and kissing her nose before setting her back down on my chest.

"Do you think you can watch her while I'm gone or do you need to me to have my sister or mom come over and help?" I asked as I rubbed my hand against Jack's scruffy cheek.

"Lex, I'm pretty sure I can watch my own daughter. I'll open some presents with her and maybe take her to see my cousin Vinny. He wants to meet her."

I nodded and attempted to cuddle deeper into Jack. He laughed and pulled me into his chest tightly, one hand lacing over mine onto Lexi's back.

"Are you sleepy?" Jack questioned into my ear when my eyes started drooping.

"Kinda. I'm mainly comfortable. It's nice to be held." I said softly as possible as to not have the vibrations of my chest wake Lexi again.

I felt Jack nod, his hand patting my hip, "Go put her to bed." He whispered in my ear, softly sucking the lobe into his mouth.

I knew what his intentions were so I shook my head with a frown as I stood up with our daughter.

"No, Jack. We don't have time."

"Well I guess we'll have to make time won't we?" He said slowly, with a wink

SORRRRYYYY This took so long. My brother gave me his laptop and I'm getting used to the keyboard. It's weird.

So I'm sorry I cut off the smut. If I get enough comments I'll throw in some future smut with them in Alex's station ;) It may even be in the next chapter or so.
