Jack and I ran through the double doors of the hospital right up to the receptionists desk.

"Lexi May Gaskarth?" I breathed out, gasping for breath.

"Yes, go ahead and go up to the same room you were in yesterday." The receptionist said and we nodded and Jack took my hand and we quickly made our way up to where we were the day before.

"I'm so scared, Jack. What if something is wrong?" I said as we walked out of the elevator and walked down the long white halls decorated with baby stuff.

"I'm sure she's fine, Lex. They're probably going to tell us how exceptionally well she's doing and we can take her home!" Jack said smiling as he gave my hand a reassuring squeeze. I just gave him a small smile as we continued to look for her room.

When we reached her room, I knocked and opened the door to see the doctor writing stuff down that seemed to be her charts.

"Hi, doctor." Jack said quietly.

"Hi, Mr. Gaskarth." He greeted back, then nodding his head toward me.

"What's going on with Lexi?" I asked and the doctor sighed.

"Have a seat." He said motioning to the few chairs by the pale yellow walls.

"Well, we ran a lot of tests on your daughter cause something seemed off when she was born," He said and Jack and I nodded, "Well we noticed that she isn't responding to sound at all. Not voices, not a rattle, music, nothing."

My heart dropped. Our daughter was deaf.

"S-So you're saying she's deaf?" Jack said quietly.

"I'm afraid so." He said as he handed Jack her charts for him to look through and then handed them to me. Everything but her hearing was perfect.

"So what do we do now?" I said with tears in my eyes.

"Well you're allowed to take her home, she's perfectly healthy. Since you're not from here, I can't recommend you any hearing specialists, but you don't need one until she's about three months. When you find her a pediatrician he or she could help you out from there." He said as he took back the charts.

"O-Okay, thanks." I said as he nodded and stood up.

"Did you fill out the rest of the paper work and the check out forms?" He asked.

"Well all of the main ones yes, but not the check out papers." Jack said as we stood up and grabbed our coats.

"Okay, well follow me and we'll go get your daughter and you can check out and be on your own way." He said smiling as we all walked down the hall to the nursery.

Walking in, we both rubbed hand sanitizer on our hands so we weren't bringing in germs to the other babies in the room.

The doctor led us about halfway down the room where she was on her back squirming slightly.

"She's just getting cuter." Jack whispered as the doctor began to detach all of the small monitors from her small frame.

"Yeah, we make cute babies, huh?" I winked, nudging Jack in the side gently.

"Totally." Jack snorted, rolling his eyes.

"Her hair is getting darker, is that normal?" I asked the doctor as he tightened a different purple blanket around Lexi and handed her off to Jack, who was making grabby hands at the baby.

"Yes, perfectly normal." He replied. I nodded and cooed at how Lexi yawned quietly and how you could see her hands thumping from under the blanket trying to move.

"Squirmy lil baby, huh?" Jack said in a baby voice as his thumb ran across her cheek over her tiny ear.

"You guys have a carrier and a car seat?" The doctor asked.

"Yes, we have that little two in one thing." Jack said as we followed the doctor out the door.

"Okay, well all you guys have to do is sign these forms then you're good to go." He said as he handed us a few papers that we signed quickly.

When we were done he handed us a large paper bag filled with diapers, a few packages of formula, a couple of bottles, and a pacifier.

"This'll hold you till you get home." He said with a smile.

"Thank you so much." I thanked as I shook his hand, Jack carefully taking one hand off Lexi so he could do the same.

"Okay, well best of luck to you guys." The doctor said before walking off to tend to other people.

"C'mon, let's go home, babe." I said as I reached up to kiss his scarred cheek and then Lexi's nose. He face scrunched up cutely making me smile.

When we were at our rental car, Jack had to unwrap Lexi and hand her off to me so I could strap her into the car seat. Right when the cold air hit her body she let out a cry and flailed her arms.

"I know baby, I know." I said in that stupid baby voice that we'd be making even though she couldn't hear us.

When she was strapped in, I tucked the blanket around her tightly and kissed her fore head before shutting the door.

"Well let's go to the hotel and get our bags, we can feed her, wait a bit and change her diaper which you by the way are doing, change her into some new clothes, and we can make our flight by 8:30." Jack said as he pulled me into his chest.

"What if I don't wanna change her diaper?!" I said, totally taken by surprise by that statement.

"Come on Mr. Firefighter you can handle a poopy diaper." Jack said laughing as he bent down to kiss me but I pulled away and glared at him before I cracked and laughed, meeting him back to return the kiss, then kissing his scarred cheeks.

"I love you." I said with a smile.

"I love you more, Alex." Jack blushed as I giggled and walked around to open the drivers side door.

"Oh, Alex?" Jack said as he opened his door.

"Yeah?" I said with a frown.

"Thanks."

"For what?"

Jack pursed his lips before smiling, "For saving my life."
